This mangrove recreational park in Kampung Sijangkang is said to be most tiring of all the mangrove parks in Malaysia. Well, I’m not so sure about that right now, perhaps after the entire project is completed, then maybe.

This recreational park serves three objectives: education, heritage preservation and recreation. But what makes this park different from all the other parks is that this one is the done at the sole initiative of fellow villagers, from workmanship to materials and most importantly, funding. Up to this point, some RM100,000 has already been spent on the development of the park.

Kampung Sijangkang boasts a population of 18,000 and it is an admirable collective effort that they have come this far with their project for the community – creating job opportunities and generating a revenue for the village. The length of the boardwalk currently stands at 400 metres and will be extended to its targeted length of 1 kilometre as and when funds roll in. Its construction began in October 2015.

By the way, ‘Si’ is the Chinese word for ‘dead’ and Jangkang is the species of a tree. So, the village is basically named after a dead tree. The majority of the population is of Javanese descent. This village was declared the best in Kuala Langat in 2015.
