Biskut Tongkat is also known as Biskut Mayat, and a string of other names. Why Biskut Tongkat? I guess it is because these “long rusks” do look like walking sticks, but corpses? I don’t think so.
Anyway, we had the opportunity to visit a Biskut Tongkat factory in Asahan, Melaka. Manufactured by Koperasi Simpang Bekoh Jasin Melaka Berhad, these biscuit snacks taste good when eaten as they are or after being dunked into beverages such as coffee or Milo.
Ingredients used in these twice-baked bread include wheat flour, butter, sweetened condensed milk, salt and water. Packed in sealed bags of 300 grams, each bag is retailed at RM3.50 (correct at press time).
During our visit, we also had the chance to sample other snacks produced by local residents, such as cheese tarts, chocolate cheese leleh and wonder cheese.
