Also known as Istana Kenangan, Istana Lembah and Istana Tepas, this building was originally built as a mausoleum for HRH Sultan Iskandar Shah (Marhum Kadasallah), while awaiting the completion of Istana Iskandariah. The building has now been converted into the Perak Royal Museum (Muzium Diraja Perak) that exhibits the history of the Perak monarchy and houses the heritage of the Perak State.
Visitors to this Perak Royal Museum in Kuala Kangsar have the opportunity to view personal collections of the Sultans of Perak. Photograph collections of members of the royal families are also exhibited in this museum.
Constructed in 1926, this building is unique in the sense that it was built without using nails. An aerial view of the building shows the shape of a sword in its scabbard. The handle of the sword is where the Sultan’s bed chamber is located.
The scabbard is the Balai Rong Seri of the palace. Although small in size, it possesses a beautiful Sultan Throne (Singgahsana). The facade of the walls is made of diamond-shaped plaits, while the structure of the roof is said to inherit the combined styles of the five ridges and the ridge row of bananas. Its original roof was made of wooden planks.
This Perak Royal Museum is open daily from 9.30am – 5pm, with a break for prayers on Fridays from 12.15pm to 2.45pm. At the time of my visit and writing this post, this museum was closed for renovation.
