To say that I was disappointed with my trip out to sea from Kuala Sungai Buloh would be an understatement.

My hopes were high that we would be able to experience Sky Mirror in Sasaran, after seeing the many captivating photos on the internet. I thought that my chance is finally here. Unfortunately, the stars did not align, so to speak, and we only managed to cruise the river for other sights instead of heading to Sasaran.

You must be wondering where is Sasaran. I have to admit that prior to learning about Sky Mirror, I had not even heard of the name. It is near Kuala Selangor, actually, about an hour’s drive from Kuala Lumpur, followed by a speedboat ride of another 30 minutes.

Sasaran suddenly became famous last year with its new tourism product of mirror effect photography. In short, Sky Mirror is Malaysia’s very own version of Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia’s salt flat. At Sasaran though, the difference is that there is no evidence of salt lumps, just a vast expanse of sand and sea, much like a beach, hence the place is known as Sasaran Beach.

However, it is not a real beach in the technical sense. During high tide, the sand disappears and it is just like the sea once again. This phenomenon happens just a few days a month, usually around 5th to 7th day, particularly during low tide.

Anyway, all was not loss, despite the cancelled Sasaran. We still managed to catch a few sights, from the harvesting of cockles to photographing swarms of egrets (Burung Bangau) flying overhead.
