Visitors to Kampung Aman Damai in Royal Belum (Upper Belum) will surely get thrown back in time.
My visit to Kampung Aman Damai, which I liken to Robinson Crusoe’s island, was an eye-opening experience.
Seeing the conditions of the village, a city girl like me wonders how one can live there at all. Well, a short stay is fine, but not for long periods of time!
The indigenous people living in Royal Belum is called the Jahai. They are scattered in three villages, but the one that is commercialised is this one called Kampung Aman Damai.
I understand that a local company has been given the task by the state government to upgrade the status of this village. Thus, the company has been coming up with various ways to attract donations and monetary contributions from tourists.
Visitors have to pay a minimum of RM1 per person to enter the village, and participation in any tribal game or activity will incur a nominal fee. There is a small stall here where traditional herbs are sold.
If you plan to drop by Kampung Aman Damai, I suggest you bring along chocolates and candies for the children! They will love you for it!
