Pulau Ketam is an idyllic fishing village that does not offer much in terms of adventure or excitement. During my visit, many of the shops prepared to close for the day by 7pm!

Maybe due to this extremely laid back lifestyle, a lot of my friends who live in Kuala Lumpur have not visited Pulau Ketam before because, and I quote, “What’s there to do on the island?”
Despite this “setback”, Pulau Ketam is an island worth visiting. In my opinion, it would suffice for a visitor to spend three days here because one can walk everywhere on the island, so you can imagine its size.
Do take note, Pulau Ketam is a mangrove island unlike those that offer sun, sand and surf. This one offers sun and mud. So, keep those bikinis at home but don’t forget the tube of sunscreen lotion.
Really, what’s there to do? After spending 4D/3N there recently, I have come up with a list for you. Here are the activities, in random order:
1) Cycling

Although it is possible to walk everywhere, it helps if you have a bicycle to cycle around. Bicycles are available for rent at only RM5 per day. Motorised ones are RM50 per day. Obviously, you are responsible to take good care of your rented vehicle. You crash, you pay for the damages.
2) Hunt for wall murals

Wall murals are beginning to grow on the island. I like to hunt for them, similar to what I did in Ipoh, Penang, Shah Alam and other places. I have no idea who drew these paintings; they are really talented.
3) Fishing

I don’t like fishing and can never understand how a person can sit (or stand) around for hours waiting for fish to bite the bait. Urgh!!! Still, this is one activity not to be missed by those who do love to fish!
4) Learn about local industries

Pulau Ketam is a fishing village, so the primary economic industry is related to fishing and sea products. Therefore, whether it is a trip to a fish farm or a cottage that processes shrimp for sale, it is educational. The locals are friendly and willingly share their knowledge with visitors.
5) Cruise in a wooden boat

If you have finished exploring Pulau Ketam, perhaps it is a good idea to expand your trip to the island beyond land. How about renting a wooden boat and cruise the waters.
6) Photography

Pulau Ketam has a vintage feel to it. The rickety wooden houses on stilts and other sights on and around the island produce enchanting photographs. Make friends with the locals to find out from them the best spots to catch sunrise or sunset.
7) Eat fresh seafood

What’s better to eat when on an island than the freshest seafood for breakfast, lunch and dinner? There are many eateries dotting the island, including pork-free establishments. Just take note of their business hours!
So, there you have it! The top seven things to do during your visit to Pulau Ketam. My favourite thing to do is No. 8, which is to do nothing!
