I really should put the brakes on delicious food postings during the month of Ramadhan. Then again, after reading about Klang’s Bamboo Biryani in Malay Mail Online, I feel that I ought to write about my own culinary escapade in Klang, as a delegate of Eat.Travel.Write.5, organised by Gaya Travel Magazine, UPEN Selangor and Klang Municipal Council (MPK).
While I personally reviewed all of these eight places, do bear in mind that this is not an exhaustive list. There are many more mouth-watering food to discover. After all, Klang is the royal town of Selangor, steep in history, culture and heritage.
Also, this list is in random order, all the easier for you to drop by, to one or to all!
Chong Kok Kopitiam
1. traditional Hainanese breakfast at Chong Kok
Said to offer Klang’s best traditional Hainanese breakfast, a must-order dish is the ‘roti telur goyang’ or soft-boiled eggs on toast, where the toast is prepared over charcoal. Or maybe plain bread spread with homemade kaya and butter strikes your fancy?

I have been told that this was once a hotel-cum-bar. The 76-year-old kopitiam actually reminds me of Ipoh’s Sin Yoon Loong. By the way, if you seek something different from Hainanese, there is another local offering: nasi lemak sambal sotong.

Lontong Klang
3. Lontong Klang, Emporium Makan
As one of the stalls in the Klang food court known as Emporium Makan, Lontong Klang is not difficult to locate at all. Although lontong is traditionally only on the “Hari Raya” menu, Lontong Klang has offered this speciality as breakfast since 1970, before I was born!

In fact, they are so popular that they have branched off to Shah Alam and Bukit Tinggi. Price for lontong starts from RM4 but they do offer a more premium version that is slightly more expensive. Other dishes sold here include lontong ayam, nasi lemak and roti canai.

Restoran Seng Huat Bak Kut Teh (non-halal)
The original Klang bak kut teh is Seng Huat, also known as ‘bak kut teh Under the Bridge’. This eatery needs no further introduction. If you like your pork rib dish in herbal broth, you should stop by Seng Huat for your fix when you are in Klang.

Don’t miss the chance eating at the original shop but you have to be there really early as they get sold out super fast! Seng Huat also has a branch in Kepong.

Yap Kee
Just like how Chong Kok reminds me of Sin Yoon Loong, Yap Kee similarly got me thinking about Ipoh’s Yong Suan and its famous nasi ganja. Yap Kee is obviously a Chinese coffee shop but it is popular for its Indian banana leaf rice.

Apparently, they sell very quickly so be there early. Another thing to note about Yap Kee’s diners is that they all have kedondong asam boi ais to accompany their spicy meal. Thus, that was what I had as well. Food and drinks menus are said to be extremely limited but no one seems to mind.

Claypot Asam Pedas / Nasi Telur Berlada ‘Andak’
From what I understand, there are quite a few food stalls in this Kampung Kuantan area that offer “telur berlada” but this one at TBG 97 seems to be the most well-received eatery. If you come by this family-run roadside stall operated in front of their family home, order anything with “telur berlada” and you will not go wrong.

Warung Pak Din
8. karipap cheese @ Warung Pak Din
Located in the middle of an established upmarket residential neighbourhood, Warung Pak Din is popular as a tea-time spot. The locals frequently come by for a selection of some fifty kuih-muih!

While there are various traditional Malay sweetmeats, other popular items include karipap cheese. Once you start eating it, you will have a difficult time stopping. And I am speaking from experience!

Besides toothsome kuih, other items on the menu are rice and noodle dishes, not forgetting to mention desserts like the ABC Tembikai Palm Grove, just what’s needed on a typical hot Malaysian afternoon.

Frankly speaking, to really enjoy Pak Din’s variety of offerings, one visit is insufficient. Then how many visits would be enough? I don’t know….depends on how much you can eat, I guess? There’s just so many items to savour at Warung Pak Din!!!

Restoran Sate Famili
If satay is your comfort food, Sate Famili is the place to be. Diners come here to eat nothing but satay as a regular meal. Well, some may go for the mini nasi lemak (Nasi Lemak Cik Ani) but satay is the staple food here.

Although there is a variety of meat on the skewers, I only opted for chicken. No red meat (satay daging and satay kambing) or offal (satay perut) for me, thank you very much. Still, I had a good meal. Not telling you how many sticks of satay I walloped. Malu….

Nasi Kukus Sotong Besar
Fancy a huge plate of fried giant squid for lunch? You have arrived at the right place. Although there are many items on the menu to choose from, I highly recommend the restaurant’s signature dish of Nasi Kukus Sotong Besar. To my delight, they also have kedondong asam boi. It seems to be the beverage of choice in Klang!
