Sungai Atas Sungai, which means River Above A River in English, is named literally, whereby a river flows on top of another.
Although the name is self-explanatory it does bring up a question mark. How is it even possible to have a river above a river? Ah, ha! That’s why you have to personally check this out to understand its mechanics.
This irrigation system was designed and built by the British in 1936, as stated on the structure.
Its main objective was (and still is) to channel water from Sungai Ijok to Tasik Bukit Merah (Bukit Merah Lake) and a nearby dam as well as to irrigate the paddy fields in the vicinity, right up to Bagan Serai. The river at the bottom is Sungai Redang Panjang.
During my tour there, the water level was low, so I could not really experience this river above another river to its fullest extent but I can imagine what a marvellous feat this is! Undoubtedly, I reiterate, this is something that has to be seen first hand, and it is only in Selama, Perak.
