Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) has a fairly new attraction, and it is in the form of an Edu-Park, to ride on the edu-tourism trend that is growing quickly around the world. With the motto “Play, Learn & Stay Young”, experiential learning begins here and now.

UPM’s Edu-Park has specially crafted an edu-tourism programme, and it encompasses attractions such as Putra Dairy, Deer Farm, Equine Centre, Human Anatomy Museum, Conservatory Park, Animal Anatomy Museum and Gallery Serdang.

Visitors to this Edu-Park can select their destinations and narrow down activities to participate in. Each comes at a different price. The delegates of Road to Agro Tourism Vol. 3 were at UPM and managed to visit the Human Anatomy Museum and Animal Anatomy Museum.

Prior to the tour, we were given a briefing by Associate Professor Dr. Goh Yong Meng from the Department of Veterinary Pre-Clinical Science Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Goh, who is an animal cardiologist, gave us a short history of the university, particularly its Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.

As the first and most established vet school in Malaysia, it has produced six National Academic Laureates since 2009. Prior to April 1997, Universiti Putra Malaysia was named Universiti Pertanian Malaysia.

Over at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, delegates had the opportunity to learn about the digestive system. This was just one of the activities at the Human Anatomy Museum. The others are Cadiovascular System, Reproductive System, Respiratory System, as well as Skeletal and Muscular System.

After watching a short video on the human digestive system, some of the delegates grabbed the chance to take a test to find out if they are left or right brain dominant.

Edu-tourism is still at its infancy in Malaysia, I would say, but with these offerings from UPM, it would be foolish of us to not explore it. There’s so much to learn in life and what better way to do so in a fun and interactive way within an academic setting?

Suitable for both adults and children, visitors can extract as much knowledge as they wish from experts in these fields, as they explore the academic world of a Malaysian Research University
