Batu Caves, with its limestone outcrop and three main caves that have been converted into Hindu temples and shrines, is the most popular Hindu place of worship outside of India.
Thousands of people come to worship, or visit, but the annual Hindu festival, Thaipusam, attracts the most people from all over Malaysia and even other countries. This year, Thaipusam falls on Jan 17, 2014.
Batu Caves is an icon by itself. The main attraction is the world’s tallest statue of Lord Murugan, which stands proudly at a height of 140ft at foot of Batu Caves, by the entrance. The statue was officially unveiled on Jan 29, 2006.
Worshippers brave the 272 steps up, to arrive at either of the cave temples at the top. They will also be rewarded with a stunning panoramic view of the city.
