Kingzmen, start your engines!

Vrooom, vrooom, vrooom, the roar of 112 Harley-Davidson engines pierced the air, creating a sweet symphony for all motorcycle fans who had gathered at Angkasapuri that fine morning to witness the flag-off of the 4th Kingz MG (Motorcycle Group) Annual Ride during the Malaysia Day long weekend.

Known as KAR (Kingz Annual Ride), this year saw members of Kingz MG Malaysia and Singapore out in full support to ride in convoy from Kuala Lumpur to historic Perak. The 1st annual KAR was to Penang (2016), followed by Johor/Singapore (2017) and Terengganu (2018). Kingz MG, which was established in 2015 by Harley-Davidson owner “Harry”, currently has 110 members all over the country, as well as Singapore.

Day 1:
KAR 2019 which was flagged off by Minister of Communications and Multimedia YB Tuan Gobind Singh Deo, was broadcast live on RTM’s Selamat Pagi Malaysia programme. RTM was KAR 2019 official media partner.

Also present on that auspicious morning were members of Persatuan Patriot Kebangsaan, led by its president Brigadier General (Rtd) Dato’ Mohamad Arshad Bin Mohamed Raji.

The presence of Patriot was significant because of the services rendered by these servicemen during tumultuous times in the history of Malaya/Malaysia, especially in action-packed Perak.

By about 9am, after all the formalities were done, it was time to get “on the bike” to spread the message of unity among Malaysians. The convoy, as long as 3 kilometres, comprised 112 Harley-Davidson Sportsters and Baggers, 35 of which were from Kingz MG Singapore.

Accompanying the convoy was a police patrol car and 11 police outriders, to ensure the safety of all road users during the 3D/2N ride to historic Perak and back.

Top on the list of designated places to stop for a visit was SMK Desa Perdana in Kuala Lumpur, to meet with the students, singing the Jalur Gemilang song together, while everyone merrily waved our national flag.

Kingz MG also presented a souvenir to YB Teresa Kok, Minister of Primary Industries & Member of Parliament for P122 Seputeh, received on behalf by her staff.

Next was a compulsory stop: Harley-Davidson Kuala Lumpur, as sponsor, for photo shoot and souvenir presentation, before hitting the highway. Woohoo! It was time for some serious tayar golek.

First Perak stop was Teluk Intan to visit the town’s famed Leaning Tower (Menara Condong). Prior to that, the grand convoy stopped at Sekolah Kebangsaan Changkat Jong to give a pillion ride to YB Tuan Nga Kor Ming (Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker & Member of Parliament for P076 Teluk Intan), an experience that not many non-Harley owners can enjoy.

The convoy then pushed on to Pasir Salak for a scrumptious lunch at Grand Village near the museum. Not only did the bikes need refuelling, so did the bikers!

The second half of the day consisted of a ride to Ipoh, capital city of the Silver State, following a stop at Kellie’s Castle in Batu Gajah. It had definitely been a long day! Time to rest up in one of the city’s newest gleaming hotel, M Roof in Ipoh Garden.

It was on this 2nd day that I managed to hitch a ride as pillion on Dato’ Alex Lau’s Harley Ultra Glide from Kuala Kangsar to Sayong, just 4km or a 15-minute ride. Nevertheless, there was more mileage to clock for me, luckily.

There was one more stop for Day 2 before returning to our hotel, and it was to Buntong’s Kampung Kacang Puteh. This village is famous for its Indian snacks that they are even exported to countries such as India, Australia and the United States of America.

Day 2 activities had to conclude early to prepare for KAR 2019 annual dinner, with a “cultural” theme. One of the highlights of the event was the launch and introduction of Kingz MG theme song, performed by Mandamus.

Oh yes, and not to forget Joe, featuring Prime D, who rocked the house down, giving the Kingzmen and their Queenz a time of their life.

Day 3:
Every KAR is a meaningful ride as Kingz MG members try their best to spread cheer and joy to the less fortunate community in the state that they visit.

The charity ride’s objective was exercised during all previous annual rides, and this year’s to historic Perak was no different. After a brief city tour around Ipoh, the most important event for the day was a trip to Sekolah Semangat Maju, Kampung Tawas, Ipoh.

This meaningful visit by Kingz MG during KAR 2019 not only reduced the financial burden of the school, at least for the month, but also gave the students wonderful memories that would stay in their mind and heart for a long time through the fun rides on Harley-Davidson motorcycles.

Before the grand convoy departed for Kuala Lumpur, they took a lunch break at Restoran Simpang Tiga in Ipoh. All in all, the convoy would have clocked approximately 718 km for the 3D/2N KAR 2019 to historic Perak, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the hard work put in by all committee members since last year!

Assuredly, let’s not forget the discipline of all Kingz members and their supportive family members, as well as dedication from Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), Malaysia Civil Defence Force (APM), Gaya Travel Magazine for this Eat.Travel.Ride programme, media partners, sponsors and more.

Well done to Kingz MG for promoting responsible riding, with emphasis on the importance of family in family first, career second and biking third.
