Marina Island Ferry Service to Pangkor Island

Compared to the “old” ferry service from Lumut Jetty to Pangkor Jetty which takes about 40 minutes one way, this ferry from Marina Island Jetty to Pangkor Jetty only requires ten minutes.

Pangkor ferry service

1. the ferry from Marina Island Pangkor to Pangkor Island

During my recent vacation to Lumut/Pangkor where I put up at Marina Island Pangkor Resort & Hotel, it was only a five to ten-minute walk from the resort to the Marina Island Jetty, so it was extremely convenient. Besides, the fare for return ticket is the same at RM10 per person only.

2. queuing to board the ferry

However, if you do not have your own transport, I’d suggest that you stick to the “old” jetty in Lumut as the bus terminal is just a stone’s throw away. If you were to utilise the ferry services at Marina Island Jetty, you would need to hail a cab, and it could cost you quite a bit, especially at night.

Dutch Fort Pangkor

1.

Despite its size, Pangkor Island has a good list of attractions to visit. One of them is Dutch Fort, or in Malay, Kota Belanda. The ruins of Dutch Fort are the remnants of an outpost by the Dutch in an attempt to control trade in the Malay Peninsular.

Dutch Fort Pangkor

2.

The Dutch used to call it Fort Dindingh, after the Dinding River, the major river that flows in Manjung District of Perak.

Dutch Fort Pangkor

3.

According to Wikipedia:

The fort was built by the Dutch in 1670 for storage and protection of tin supplies from the sultanate of Perak. The fort was destroyed in 1690 by the Malays who were discontent with the methods used by the Dutch in obtaining minerals.

It was rebuilt by the Dutch in 1743 and a force of 60 soldiers was placed to guard the fort until 1748, when the force was disbanded and the fort abandoned.

The fort was reconstructed by Malaysia’s museum department in 1973 and was gazetted as an ancient monument and historical site under the Antiquities Act 1976 No. 242 Perak Gazette dated 21 March 1978.

The fort is set a short distance from the ocean and consists of three brick walls with round windows at regular intervals. A small park and some souvenir stores have been set up around the area for visitors and is a popular tourist sight on the island today.

Ipoh to Lumut by Express Bus

As you can see from my posts this past week, I was in Lumut/Pangkor for a short vacation recently.

I had thought of taking the public transport to Lumut from Ipoh but subsequently changed my mind and drove down instead. It’s always more convenient to have your own transport on a road trip, eh?

Anyway, I did my research on express buses that ply the Ipoh to Lumut route, and will share my findings here for the benefit of readers.

There may be other bus companies that cater to travellers between Ipoh and Lumut that I am not aware of, but here are the bus schedules and ticket fares for two reliable bus companies.

Perak Roadways have more frequent buses to Lumut from Ipoh compared to Sri Maju. However, from the conditions of these buses, they don’t look as comfortable. Also, unlike Sri Maju buses that shuttle directly from Ipoh to Lumut and back, they need to make a few stops in smaller towns along the way.

On the other hand, the Event Coach is for special celebratory occasions such as birthdays, parties and more.

The following are posts on KTMB’s other rail services, for your reference:

Ipoh – KL Sentral Electric Train Service (ETS)
http://www.emily2u.com/new-electric-train-service-ets-schedule-kl-sentral-ipoh/

Ipoh – Kuala Lumpur (KTM Intercity)
http://www.emily2u.com/ktm-kl-ipoh-kl-new-schedule/

Ipoh – Hat Yai (Thailand)
http://www.emily2u.com/travel-hatyai-thailand-from-ipoh-by-train/

Do note that these prices are promotional fares, calculated at 13 sen per kilometre. The normal rate is 17 sen per kilometre. In September, the number of trains will increase to four per day. Next year, commuters can expect business class with reclining seats.

Personally, I am interested in the electric train service from Ipoh to Butterworth. At this point, there is only one train per day, and since the train departs from the Ipoh Railway Station at 5am, it is possible for Ipohites to go to Butterworth on a day trip.

If we were to cross to Penang Island, it is advisable to do so by ferry – the Pangkalan Sultan Abdul Halim Ferry Terminal is just a short distance from the Butterworth Railway Station.

However, for travellers coming from the North, it is impossible to complete the visit to Ipoh within a day as the departure time from Padang Besar is 2pm and Butterworth to Ipoh is 5pm.

The above KTMB electric train services for KL Sentral – Padang Besar – KL Sentral, Ipoh – Butterworth – Ipoh and Butterworth – Padang Besar – Butterworth will be updated as and when new information is made available.

If you have any questions regarding the schedule or fare, do leave a comment.

Happy Eight Retreat Ipoh

1. The Happy 8 Retreat, Ipoh

Although I have passed by The Happy 8 Retreat in Ipoh Old Town a number of times, it was only recently that I had the opportunity to check out the rooms.

Happy Eight Retreat Ipoh

2. The Yasoh Family welcomes you to The Happy 8 Retreat

Opened since the fourth quarter of 2013, the retreat, in the heart of Old Town, is the owners’ second retreat after their first venture, The Happy 8 Retreat in Pasir Puteh Ipoh. They also recently opened a third retreat in Kuala Sepetang.

Happy Eight Retreat Ipoh

3. shots around the lobby

The Happy 8 Retreat in Ipoh Old Town is a work of art. While the original façade of the building has been maintained, stepping foot into the lobby, you would be swept away by the many different works of art, all calling for your attention.

Happy Eight Retreat Ipoh

4. walls as canvas

Your first visit to this art boutique hotel could be a little overwhelming. After all, some people have trouble locating it because it doesn’t carry any signage. Worry not! There’s a large number 8 by the entrance!

Happy Eight Retreat Ipoh

5. walls as canvas

There are a total of 13 rooms here that accommodate from two to four guests each. Every room features a different design. The doors are painted with the wau, Malaysia’s traditional kite, and each one is painted with the colour of Malaysia’s 13 state flags.

Happy Eight Retreat Ipoh

6. one of the rooms

In fact, I would say that every room is a surprise for the guest and one is hard pressed to get bored. You’d need at least 13 stays here before you’ve seen them all!

Happy Eight Retreat Ipoh

7. one of the rooms - check out the air-conditioner

As the mascot of the hotel, you will see the Yasoh Family all over the building. It’s interesting to learn that the entire hotel was painted by a Nepalese artist, who was given a free hand to paint whatever that came to his mind, and I would commend it was a job well done.

Happy Eight Retreat Ipoh

8. one of the rooms

Many of the furniture and decorations were made from old or unwanted wood pieces that have been reused or repurposed. And so, The Happy 8 Retreat makes an ideal platform for budding artists because the owners as art lovers themselves willingly provide an avenue for their work to be appreciated and talent recognised as works of art are permitted to be put up for display and sale here.

Happy Eight Retreat Ipoh

9. one of the rooms that pays tribute to the building’s past life as a swiflet hotel

As the hotel is located near to many of the popular wall murals in Old Town, guests can also hire the rickshaw and be driven to these spots without having to walk, or waste time searching for them. Nothing beats having a local guide, eh?

Happy Eight Retreat Ipoh

10. contrasting room types – attic room & family room

By the way, the owners of the hotel also manage The Happy 8 Café on the ground floor. Guests, who are given a sample of coffee beans in their room upon check-in, have the pleasure of having the beans brewed and be introduced to a different blend of coffee every time.

Happy Eight Retreat Ipoh
