Muzium Alam Semulajadi

Putrajaya Museum of Nature

Putrajaya’s Museum of Nature (Muzium Alam Semula Jadi), which opened for the public since early 2010, consists of two galleries; one for mammals on the ground floor, and one for bugs and insects on the first floor. All exhibits at this museum are real, and have been preserved for educational purposes.

Muzium Alam Semulajadi

Muzium Alam Semulajadi

Sumatran rhinoceros (badak Sumatra)

This Museum of Nature exhibits a total of 637 specimen collections, including skeletons. In fact, one of the museum’s biggest attractions is the Bryde’s whale skeleton measuring some 39 feet, placed at the entrance of the gallery to welcome visitors. Specimens are exhibited according to species and animal groups.

The purpose of our visit to this museum was to educate us on the animal kingdom. We were given a short quiz to answer within thirty minutes. This made us read through the text provided for the many different exhibits. I am sure, without this quiz, many of us would just quickly browse through the exhibits.

It ensures the suitability of the waters of Putrajaya Lake to be used by humans for recreational activities.

For example, I don’t think many bridal couples know of this ideal location for their wedding photographs.

Malacca Butterfly Park & Reptile Sanctuary

When I found out that we would be visiting a butterfly park in Malacca, I was very excited. I really enjoyed my trip to the Kuala Lumpur butterfly park but that was quite a few years ago already and I have missed the graceful butterflies. Do you realise that butterflies only have a ten-day lifespan? That is seriously short!

The first butterfly aviary in Malacca Butterfly Sanctuary was opened to the public on Feb 1, 1991. The second was opened just last Christmas. Besides breeding butterflies, it is also a sanctuary for birds and reptiles. Yikes, I know!

The Kampung Kundang pineapple plantation in Batu Laut, Banting, Selangor is three hundred acres wide, and they are in the process of converting all the crops into a single pineapple species: MD2.

In 2011, the plantation achieved a gross revenue of RM1 million but once the entire plantation has been fully converted to plant only MD2, the projected revenue by Year 2015 is RM7 million. The cooperative body that owns this plantation, Koperasi Serbaguna Anak-Anak Selangor Berhad, believes that the higher planting density of MD2 will yield better returns.

The base of the Bukit Jugra lighthouse, which is 300 feet above sea level, is a popular paragliding spot for enthusiasts in and outside of the country, since 2002. These are for sale, probably at much cheaper prices than at the market.

Equatorial Cameron Highlands

Equatorial Cameron Highlands

My stay at Equatorial Cameron Highlands was less than pleasant. Spending a night at the service apartment and subsequently checking out a standard room at the hotel, I have a feeling that the service apartment is like the neglected step-daughter.

It was bad enough that upon our late check-in at the low-rise apartment, water from the tap was murky, but waking up at 7am, we discovered that there was no water at all! The hotel staff blamed it on low water pressure.

My room mates and I had to trudge to the hotel in our jammies and get ourselves a complimentary room to freshen up. Hence, that was how we ended up using two rooms for one night.

It was a lot of time wasted that I didn’t manage to visit the Brinchang morning market, or at least, shoot more photos of the hotel.

Muzium Lebah Sedunia Melaka

I don’t like bees but since this World’s Bees Museum is just adjacent to the Malacca Butterfly Park & Reptile Sanctuary, I decided to give it a visit. Although this is said to be the world’s museum on bees, it is not very large.

As a bee museum, different species of bees are preserved and exhibited. Obviously, if not for the labels, I wouldn’t be able to tell apart one species from another.

Even after my visit to the museum, I still wasn’t able to find that love for bees. Their buzz could be quite scary to me!

Oh yes, the main objective here is not really to learn about bees per se, as there’s no one here to take a visitor around and explain the exhibits. It’s more an avenue to sell honey products, and there are quite a few choices. One could even try out the many different honey drinks too.

Next to this bee museum is another section, where bees are bred and honey produced, if not mistaken. I was not allowed to go near it as I could get a bee sting. Well, I wouldn’t be surprised that bees realise who are not their friends. LOL

Verdict: Worth visiting only if you like bees, are curious about how honey is produced, or looking to purchase honey products.

Munshi Abdullah, born Abdullah bin Abdul Kadir, is known as “The Father of Modern Malay Literature”. Born in 1797 in Kampung Pali, Malacca, he was given the title “Munshi” when he was just a teenager. It means “Teacher of Language” in Arabic. One of this more well-known Malay literature is “Hikayat Abdullah” which in Malay means the “Story of Abdullah”.

Kampung Pali, which was later renamed Kampung Masjid, and is now known as Kampung Ketek (Ketek Village), is one of the oldest villages recorded since the Dutch era in Melaka. Located in the UNESCO World Heritage Zone of Malacca City, it is stashed in a corner of Jonker and Harmony Streets, opposite of Cheng Hoon Teng temple, and could be easily missed, even for locals.

The village is so small, it only has seven residential houses. Some of these houses are still occupied. The mausoleum of Acheh General, Syamsudin Al-Sumatarani, is also found in Kampung Ketek.
