Meet Squish, the Greater Flamingo Chick, at Singapore’s Jurong Bird Park

Since June, a team of animal care staff at Jurong Bird Park’s Breeding and Research Centre has been rearing an adorable ball of grey fluff, even pampering it with a pair of cute blue shoes.

This ball of fluff, a Greater Flamingo, has been named Squish, for its ‘squish-ability’. When keepers at the park found it as an abandoned egg, it was swiftly brought to the incubation room at the Breeding and Research Centre, where it was kept snug and warm for about a month at approximately 37 degrees Celsius. It hatched on 7th June, 2017.

Weighing in merely at 90.5g on Day One, keepers have been taking turns to keep a close eye on the chick, feeding it a special formula consisting of eggs and multi-vitamins, up to five times a day. The formula, high in protein, is similar to a parent flamingo’s crop milk. Today, Squish weighs a healthy 1.2kg.

Keepers at Jurong Bird Park started walking Squish when he was ten days old.

To develop strength in its legs, Squish goes on short walks around the Breeding and Research Centre daily. To protect its delicate foot pads from hard ground surfaces, his carers fashioned a pair of soft blue booties for Squish to plod around in, while having some fun in the sun. In their natural habitats where ground surfaces are softer, flamingo chicks start walking when they are about a week old.

Squish spends most of its time in the Centre’s weaning room, getting used to the outdoor temperature and learning to feed on its own. When Squish reaches three months, it will be introduced to the flock at Flamingo Lake.

Baby flamingos are whitish-grey, and gradually acquire their characteristic pink plumage after around two years from their diet of shrimps, other small crustaceans and algae. Greater Flamingos are also the largest of their species. There are currently over 300 Greater Flamingos at Jurong Bird Park’s Flamingo Lake and every year the park breeds several chicks.

Jurong Bird Park also undertakes an annual health check and flu vaccination for waterfowl, such as flamingos, to ensure that the birds are healthy and facilitate early detection of illnesses and treatment.

Discover Selangor at a Bargain @ MATTA Fair KL 2017

It’s the start of the 3-day MATTA Fair tomorrow, at selected locations nationwide. While I will personally be checking out the offers at the fair in Ipoh, a little bird informed me about some of the best bargains that are available at MATTA Fair KL, to discover AND experience the fascinating state of Selangor, at a friendly budget.

MinNature Malaysia

MinNature Malaysia

One of the highlights at Tourism Selangor’s Pavillion is MinNature Malaysia. This is Asia’s largest and the world’s third largest permanent indoor 3D printed miniature and train exhibition.

At MATTA Fair KL this September, tickets to MinNature are going for RM50 (family package for 2 adults + 2 children), inclusive of participation in two exclusive Tree Workshops.

Read about my personal experience at MinNature Malaysia HERE.

Farm In The City

Farm In The City

Next to be featured is Farm In The City. I have not personally been to this non-traditional zoo in Seri Kembangan yet, but I have visited their sister setup, KL Tower Mini Zoo.

I had a wonderful experience at the mini zoo in KL Tower and it has always been my dream to visit Farm In The City one day. Entrance tickets to this petting zoo are going at 50% discount during MATTA Fair KL.

Read about my personal experience at KL Tower Mini Zoo HERE.

KidZania Kuala Lumpur

KidZania Kuala Lumpur

KidZania Kuala Lumpur is actually located at Curve NX, in Petaling Jaya, Selangor. Therefore, it is appropriate that they are also included in today’s post to Discover Selangor.

It’s been five years since my last visit and it is high time I drop by again as I have heard from friends that KidZania is much improved. Bigger and better, so to speak. This MATTA Fair KL, save up to 40% on entrance tickets to KidZania KL!

Read about my personal experience at KidZania Kuala Lumpur HERE.

Sky Mirror Sasaran Beach

Sky Mirror Sasaran Beach

Last but not least, and one of my personal favourites, is Sky Mirror. This is Malaysia’s very own version of Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia’s salt flat. At Sasaran, though, the difference is that there is no evidence of salt lumps, just a vast expanse of sand and sea, almost like a beach, hence the place is known as Sasaran Beach.

It is not a real beach in the technical sense. During high tide, the sand disappears and it is just like the sea once again. This phenomenon happens about twenty days in a month, at different times of the day. Remember to book your Sky Mirror tour from the only licensed operator via their official Facebook Page: 天空之镜 Sky Mirror Tour & Travel Sdn Bhd.

At MATTA Fair KL, what Sky Mirror promotion can you expect? Your guess is as good as mine!

Read about my personal experience at Sky Mirror HERE.

MATTA Fair KL 2017 September edition is expected to draw 110,000 visitors over three days, from 8th to 10th September, 2017.

The annual Festival Kenyir at Pengkalan Gawi, Lake Kenyir is back and it will be hosted next weekend for four days from 14th Sept.

I attended the event two years ago, and although I wish very much to be at Lake Kenyir this year, I am grounded due to a mishap and I can only sit this out. There is always next year, I console myself. Even so, physically, I may be in Ipoh but my mind and spirit are already in the East Coast.

Nevertheless, I have the tentative programme for Festival Kenyir 2017 with me. Do check out the many activities that have been lined up, and you will probably understand why this is the must-go event.

Due to the name, Kenyir, many people have the misconception that this is a water-based event. They can’t be more wrong. In fact, this festival is suitable for families of three generations as there are many different activities to suit all age groups.

Although Festival Kenyir 2017 is only held over four days, versus the long 7-day event in 2015 which I attended, going through the programme, I feel that there are even more activities lined up this year.

Among the many that have caught my eye are the hot air balloon, helicopter ride, river cruise, island hopping, community sports, water sports, auto fest, as well as cultural events such as silat kura-kura, dikir barat and traditional games.

Travel Deals & Great Bargains @ MATTA Fair Perak 2017

The much awaited MATTA Fair Perak is back with a new round of travel deals and great bargains for travel lovers. 19 tour and travel agents are present, occupying 89 booths.

MATTA Fair Perak 2017

MATTA Fair Perak 2017

Although I wish to plan a trip somewhere, I really have no idea where to go. That was why I checked out all the offers when I dropped by at the venue yesterday afternoon. While there are many common tours, such as those to India, China, Japan and Korea, what really caught my eye were cruises and exotic tours.

You know I’ve wanted to go on a cruise for the longest time. At MATTA Fair Perak 2017 in Ipoh, the cheapest I found were RM699+ for 4D/3N to Penang – Port Kalng – Phuket – Penang or RM899+ for 5D/4N to Penang – Port Klang – Langkawi – Phuket – Penang.

I wasn’t able to find the cruise that departs from Boustead Cruise Centre, though. Cruise ships began departing from BCC since 3rd September, 2017.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to purchase because for these SuperStar Libra Star Cruises, we are expected to sail only in September and October, and I am not sure if I have any vacation time within these two months. Boohoo!

Of course, there are other cruises available but they are seriously out of my budget! 10D Norway Northern Light + Snow Hotel at RM12639, 8D Japan cruise at RM5529, and other offers on the Royal Caribbean at undisclosed prices. Aiyoyo amama!! How to afford liddat??

One of the agents is selling a 9D/7N Arctic Circle tour. Now, this is more like my kind of dream holiday. To be honest, this can only remain as a dream for the time being.

Cheong Kee Wang of Marina Island Pangkor Resort

Cheong Kee Wang of Marina Island Pangkor Resort

Closer to home, there are steep discounts from hotels and resorts. 1 bedroom apartment at Marina Island Pangkor Resort & Hotel is only going for RM178 nett per night (normal price: RM318), inclusive of breakfast for two.

This price is only available for three days at MATTA Fair Perak. However, these vouchers are valid until 10th March, 2018. The best thing is that they are redeemable even during school holidays and weekends at no extra charge. Do take note that there will be a RM50 surcharge during public holidays.

Amadeus Journey of Me Insights: What Malaysian Travellers Want

$

As someone who spends a fair amount of time answering surveys, it amused me to receive this survey report by Amadeus Asia Pacific, on what the Asia Pacific traveller wants, in order to enhance his or her travel experience.

The research, Journey of Me Insights: What Asia Pacific travellers want, was conducted in May 2017 in collaboration with YouGov. A total of 6,870 respondents from 14 markets in Asia Pacific that have travelled internationally in the past 12 months were sampled.

Journey of Me Insights

Journey of Me Insights

The 14 markets in random order were:

• Australia (500 respondents),
• China (1,200),
• Hong Kong (300),
• India (1,200),
• Indonesia (500),
• Japan (420),
• Korea (400),
• Malaysia (400),
• New Zealand (250),
• Philippines (400),
• Singapore (300),
• Taiwan (300),
• Thailand (400),
• Vietnam (300).

Why was I amused? I remember answering this survey, hence I have reason to believe that I was one of the 400 Malaysians.

From when and how Malaysian travellers plan and book their trips, to how and why they want to stay connected while travelling, to how frequently they use sharing economy services, and the types of new technologies they would be most interested in, the study took a multi-faceted look at what Malaysian travellers want.

In a nutshell, 64% of Asia Pacific travellers interviewed are open to sharing personal data for more relevant offers and personalised experiences. Slightly more cautious, 57% of Malaysian travellers feel the same.

What Malaysian Travellers Want

What Malaysian Travellers Want

For travel providers, the mandate is clear – personalisation must be carefully balanced against rising privacy concerns. They will need to respect and protect personal data and the need for privacy at all times. Above and beyond adhering to legislation, travel players must be able to articulate ‘what’s the value?’ to get travellers to share their data.

Asia Pacific travellers seek what’s genuine, and turn to their fellow travellers for inspiration. When planning trips, Malaysian travellers are most influenced by word of mouth from friends, family and colleagues as well as traveller reviews. Their social network and travel review sites were likewise voted most likely to have sent them relevant recommendations about travel.

While the vast majority of Malaysian travellers would be interested in receiving travel recommendations from the moment they consider a trip all the way up to while they are on the trip, travel players must consider carefully how to connect with them and with what content.

42% of Malaysian travellers prefer to receive updates and recommendations about their trip through e-mail, with only 4% happy to be contacted via phone call. Recommendations that help them save money was the top choice for Malaysian travellers (51%), while timesaving tips were less popular (12%).

There are many Asias within Asia
The most dominant observation from Journey of Me Insights is that there is no consistent profile for the Asia Pacific traveller. Stark contrasts in behaviours, needs and preferences were observed across all geographic and demographic lines. For example, while 66% of Chinese travellers do most of their trip booking on mobile, only 39% of Malaysian travellers do so.

Separately, while 70% of Japanese travellers have never used a sharing economy service for trip accommodation, 64% of Malaysian travellers have, and almost half of all Indian travellers say they do so ‘often’ and ‘very often’. And while 84% of Singaporean travellers think it’s important to find service staff at the destination that speak a language they understand, only half (47%) of Malaysians do, with Hong Kong travellers (4%) even less likely to think the same.

Miro Blazevic, General Manager, Amadeus Malaysia concluded, “At Amadeus, our goal is to help the travel industry thrive by putting the traveller at the centre of everything we do. That’s why we’re investing to understand who they are and what they want. The Malaysia report gives us many interesting insights – some expected, others less so.

“One of the observations that stood out to me was how important cost-saving is to Malaysian travellers. Indeed, the number of Malaysians travelling overseas fell last year as a result of a weakened ringgit, so this is not surprising. But this can be an opportunity to travel players, if for example, they can help build more rewarding journeys for their travellers that also save them money.”

It is the dream of every avid traveller to visit all the Seven Wonders of the Modern World and there is no denying that this is a feat that I would love to personally achieve as well.

Perhaps you are not aware, the Seven Wonders of the Modern World are:

– Chichén Itza, Mexico
– Christ the Redeemer Statue, Brazil
– Colosseum, Italy
– Taj Mahal, India
– Great Wall of China
– Petra, Jordan
– Machu Picchu, Peru

Great Wall of China

Great Wall of China

Of course, there are also the classic Seven Wonders of the World:

– Colossus of Rhodes
– Great Pyramid of Giza
– Hanging Gardens of Babylon
– Lighthouse of Alexandria
– Mausoleum at Halicarnassus
– Statue of Zeus at Olympia
– Temple of Artemis at Ephesus

Taj Mahal, India

Taj Mahal, India

And, the Seven Natural Wonders of the World:

– Grand Canyon
– The Great Barrier Reef
– The Harbour of Rio de Janeiro
– Mt. Everest
– Northern Lights
– Paricutin Volcano
– Victoria Falls

The Treasury @ Petra, Jordan

The Treasury @ Petra, Jordan

The problem that most Malaysian wage earners face, including yours truly, is that our Ringgit can only take us so far. Therefore, while there are so many places that I want to visit, I am concentrating on the Seven Wonders of the Modern World, simply because it appears to be more attainable than the other two lists.

At this point, out of the seven landmarks, I have already checked off three. Which are they, do you know? The answer is in the photos enclosed!

What about you? Which destinations are you working towards, as a traveller?

Half-Day Tour of Selama (Perak)

As a travel blogger, I can say that I have traversed the length and breadth of the state of Perak, looking for content, unearthing hidden gems and taking the road less travelled.

1. welcome to Selama

1. welcome to Selama

I had the opportunity to visit Selama a few days ago, and was delighted that I could check out some of its attractions. Of course, I have been to Selama previously but it was only for several hours, unrelated to tourism, unfortunately.

2. north to Selama (Kedah), east to Selama (Perak)

2. north to Selama (Kedah), east to Selama (Perak)

To give you background information on Selama, which is situated about 120km north of Ipoh, it was originally known as Kampung Selamat. The area was founded by one Abdul Karim bin Raja Aman Shah on 22nd January, 1870.

Even before the arrival of Abdul Karim, a village was already in existence, where residents were Malaysians from Pattani, Southern Thailand.

The settlement was located by the bank of a river just 10km from Selama town. This village was named Kampung Sungai Bayor.

Abdul Karim and his entourage arrived in Selama via a boat, cruising along Sungai Kerian. They initially stopped at Tanjong Medan (now Kampung Medan) but later moved to Kampung Selamat, situated between Jalan Sir Chulan and Kampung Gudang. Kampung Selamat was subsequently renamed as Kampung Selama.

With the discovery of tin ore in the area, population in Selama expanded to include people of Chinese and Rawa descent, as tin mine owners and workers.

Abdul Karim passed away in 1892.

Selama is a fresh tourism product, still very much unexplored. The local authorities only began to intensify the promotion of Selama’s tourist offerings this past couple of years. It is interesting to note that the District of Selama is as large as the size of Perlis state. There are three sub-districts (mukim): Ulu Ijok, Ulu Selama and Selama. Half the district is covered by forests and vegetation.

Although a large area of Selama District is undeveloped, it is still a potential tourist destination to be reckoned with, especially when it comes to eco-tourism.

Indeed, Selama is rich in flora and fauna. The entire district is like a playground of nature for those who like to be in the great outdoors. Within the district, there are some twenty attractions, seven of which are waterfalls. Isn’t that amazing?

3. right to Telaga Gergasi, left to Sungai Atas Sungai

3. right to Telaga Gergasi, left to Sungai Atas Sungai

If time permits, these attractions are best visited in an overnight trip, unless you want to enjoy every single waterfall! But what if you were pressed for time? Can you still enjoy Selama? Yes, of course! In this article, let you show you my own 1/2-day trip to Selama and the places that I visited.

Sungai Atas Sungai (River Above A River)

4. Sungai Atas Sungai was built by the Department of Irrigation and Drainage in 1936

4. Sungai Atas Sungai was built by the Department of Irrigation and Drainage in 1936

The name is pretty self-explanatory but it does bring up a question mark. How is it even possible to have a river above a river? Ah, ha! That’s why you have to personally check this out to understand its mechanics.

5. Sungai Atas Sungai

5. Sungai Atas Sungai

An irrigation system designed by the British that was built in 1936, it was constructed to channel water from Sungai Ijok to Tasik Bukit Merah (Bukit Merah Lake) and a nearby dam as well as to support the paddy fields in the vicinity. The river at the bottom is Sungai Redang Panjang.

Telaga Gergasi (Gigantic Well)

6. drive along the river bank from Sungai Atas Sungai to Telaga Gergasi

6. drive along the river bank from Sungai Atas Sungai to Telaga Gergasi

Just 2km from Sungai Atas Sungai, driving along the bank of the river, we arrived at Telaga Gergasi (Gigantic Well), located in Kampung Bagan Baharu. Again, the name is very descriptive. But why does the community need a gigantic well? Believed to be built by the British, also in 1936, this well is part of the Sungai Atas Sungai structure.

7. Telaga Gergasi (image credit: Majlis Daerah Selama)

7. Telaga Gergasi (image credit: Majlis Daerah Selama)

Still being used today to divert water from Sungai Ijok to Tasik Bukit Merah, the well is 18 metres deep, mainly to prevent erosion to the river bed and also to filter debris before the water flows out to the lake, via an underground channel.

Why would travellers want to visit Telaga Gergasi? Besides learning British engineering, on a good day when the water level is high, multiple rainbows are formed when sunlight shines onto water sprays created from the steep drop of the blanket of water.

Kota Persembunyian Raja Bersiong

Kota Persembunyian Raja Bersiong, or simply Kota Raja Bersiong, is located at the fringes of a forest in Mukim Ijok, Selama, adjacent to a small oil palm holding.

Raja Bersiong, said to be the 4th descendant of Merong Mahawangsa, was believed to be a tyrannical king from the neighbouring state of Kedah. The story goes to say that one day, his cook suffered a cut on the finger while preparing food for the ruler. After consuming the blood-tainted food, Raja Bersiong kept needing to be fed blood, to the point of killing his subjects just for blood.

Because of this Dracula trait, he was wanted by authorities, causing him to be on the run. Raja Bersiong and his men were said to have hidden under those rocks, and even threw parties on the plateau above one of the large rocks.

Whether this happened for real it is hard to tell. However, when Raja Bersiong’s hideout was first discovered, furniture, pots and pans, etc. were found.

Lata Tebing Tinggi / Lata Mengkuang

One of seven waterfalls that is open to the public, Lata Tebing Tinggi is also known as Lata Mengkuang. Merely 300 metres from the main road, the waterfall is easily accessible, without the need for a 4-wheel drive vehicle.

9. Lata Tebing Tinggi

9. Lata Tebing Tinggi

The seven waterfalls offer different levels of impediment and challenges. Lata Tebing Tinggi is one of the mildest, suitable for even young children. I was there on a weekday and only had to share the awesome nature with a few locals. On weekends, there would be more vacationers. Entrance to the waterfall is free-of-charge.

The authorities are currently upgrading the facilities here. 20 units of chalets are being built, estimated to be ready by mid-2018. Then, visitors can opt to spend a night or two here and enjoy nature at her best.

Selama Inn @ Rumah Rehat Selama

Although one can manage a half-day or full-day tour of Selama, there may be travellers who wish to break their journey, especially if they are heading north to Thailand. Selama makes a great pit stop. This quiet town is to be explored leisurely to be appreciated.

Refuel

During my two visits to Selama, I dropped by at Refuel for a meal both times. Refuel comes highly recommended by locals, that’s why. Located between the town’s Caltex fuel station and SuperEZ launderette, Refuel is easily spotted from far away.

12. Refuel, not your ordinary kopitiam

12. Refuel, not your ordinary kopitiam

Refuel is Selama’s version of a hipster café. This self-service café won second place in the recent Celebrating Visit Perak Year 2017 @ My Perak Green & Clean Campaign for “Kemudahan Pelancong Terbersih Restoran”.

14. Kubu Gajah, Selama

14. Kubu Gajah, Selama

So, here you have it! What to see and do in Selama should you have half a day to fill. I personally think that to really enjoy all the attractions of Selama, one should allocate at least 2D/1N, or better still, 3D/2N.

The following are the packages available for group outings:

*Family Day
*Course / Workshop
*Team Building
– to Lata Buluh
– to Lata Mengkuang

These packages are priced from RM100 per person. Minimum 30 pax to go, up to 60 pax each package.

During my tour there, the water level was low, so I could not really experience this river above another river to its fullest extent but I can imagine what a marvellous feat this is! Undoubtedly, I reiterate, this is something that has to be seen first hand, and it is only in Selama, Perak.

Tourism Selangor, together with the state’s Kuala Selangor District Council, connects businesses from the state of Selangor and Japan in a B2B session at JATA Tourism EXPO 2017, which took place at Tokyo Big Sight in Japan last month.

The event provided participants who came from various travel agencies, government agencies and hoteliers to connect with travel industry associates.

“Selangor’s tourism industry still has a lot of potential for development and can be explored even further, particularly with our counterparts in Japan.

“In our quest to be an active and thriving tourism industry, we at Tourism Selangor and the Selangor government are supportive of all efforts by our local industry players to develop attractive products available at home, such as Eco Nature, Agro Tourism, Homestay, Heritage and Culture”, said Puan Noorul Ashikin Mohd Din, General Manager of Tourism Selangor.

“We are confident that Selangor’s tourism products would receive encouraging response from Japanese tourists as they always like things that are new and different.

“What we initiate together with the Kuala Selangor District Council and Hakuba Tourism Association is a powerful platform that can help drive tourist arrivals from Japan and getting them to go around Selangor and stay longer.

“Local businesses can capitalise on this inbound interest to grow the economy of the state in the long term,” she added.

Statistics have shown that there is an increase of 211.38% tourist arrivals from Japan in the first quarter of the year, from January – April 2016 (20,026) to January – April 2017 (62,356). While Malaysia is a popular destination for Japanese, Selangor may prove to be worthy of the attention for those who go for longer holidays.

This year, Tourism Selangor, the Kuala Selangor District Council and Hakuba Tourism Association took the opportunity to leverage on the expo to initiate the collaboration between two destinations, Selangor’s district of Kuala Selangor and Hakuba Goryu, Japan. The collaboration was an initiative to promote cooperation and expertise in tourism aspects between both cities.

The twin cities will collaborate to promote its firefly’s products, aimed to learn more about the preservation of firefly colonies in Kampung Kuantan, Kuala Selangor and to work hand in hand for the development of tourism between the two cities.

This cooperation is a continuous effort of JATA’s participation last year.

Tourism Selangor has also received an official visit from Hakuba Tourism Association on 8th of September, in Kuala Selangor. Counter-visits from Tourism Selangor and Kuala Selangor District Council will continue officially to Hakuba Goryu City after the participation of JATA 2017, which will be hosted by Hakuba Tourism Association.

The ongoing Discover Selangor campaign is a benchmark for Tourism Selangor in promoting new and old products that have not garnered much attention, thus highlighting and promoting them to the public as well as the tourism market, domestically and abroad.

The accompanying ‘Heart of Malaysia’ is used as a slogan to strengthen the current promotional campaign, specifically indicating Selangor state as a hub for transportation, development, investment, business, education, medical and others – where it all begins and centred around the state of Selangor.

For years, I have been wanting to visit Kinta Nature Park (KNP) but due to many negative reports heard about its condition, I kept postponing my trip. Besides, bird watching requires a lot of time, which I couldn’t spare. This waiting game is difficult to play when one is always rushing here and there!

Nonetheless, I finally found the time to visit, shortly after its reopening. If you were not aware, Kinta Nature Park was closed for ten years after about seven years since being set up.

Now under the Perak State Park Corporation, it recently underwent upgrading works. The park, which consists of 14 disused tin mining ponds, now features restored watchtower, pavilions, walkway and toilets. With that many ponds, if you were wondering, fishing is allowed but not net fishing.

I arrived in the late morning – not an ideal hour for bird watching but no time is a bad time for the activity, because there will be birds, just not many.

Kinta Nature Park is in Batu Gajah, but from the main road, one has to drive 5km along the bank of the Kinta River to reach the entrance of the 900-hectare park. This is a laterite road, which could cause damage to the undercarriage of car or its tyres, unless you drive a heavy-duty vehicle. In any case, steer slowly and carefully.

Kinta Nature Park is said to be one of the largest heronries in Malaysia, where five species of herons and egrets breed, such as Grey Heron, the Black-crowned Night Heron, and the Cattle Egret.

According to a local, the area is very noisy in the evenings when the birds come back to roost. During the day, they fly to a nearby rubbish dump to scavenge for food.

If you plan to bird watch at Kinta Nature Park, it is better to engage an experienced tour guide. Drop me a line if you need a contact of a guide. Even if you do not require the services of a guide, you must visit in a group. The area is very large, so better take precautions to avoid untoward incidents.
