The reason I was in Malacca was the opportunity to taste for myself Portuguese cuisine, both from Portugal and Malaysia’s Portuguese community.
As you can imagine, it was a trip that saw us stuffing ourselves from morning till night. I’m not complaining, though!
This is one restaurant that is like a hidden gem even among the locals. Called Big Ben’s Restaurant, Café & Cottage Industry, it is located at the underutilised Limkokwing Academy of Creativity & Innovation within the one and only Portuguese Settlement in Ujong Pasir, Malacca.
Perhaps Limkokwing Academy doesn’t ring a bell. Well, the building was formerly Lisbon Hotel. Ah-ha!
Our lunch here, prepared by Big Ben himself, was THE opportunity to try authentic Malaccan Portuguese cuisine. As you can see, they are all spicy! The difference is just in their different levels of spiciness.
Prior to this meal, the only Portuguese dish that I have eaten was Devil’s Curry. Suffice to say, with a full course meal like this, it was a great culinary experience for me and I am already thinking of making another trip here. Luckily, it’s not difficult to locate now that In know Big Ben’s hiding spot.
Have a look at my food shots and salivate but please don’t ask me for their recipes!
