If you find yourself in Klang over the weekend and looking for something interesting to do, may I suggest that you participate in the Royal Klang Heritage Walk, a free guided walking tour, that will make you look at Klang town with renewed eyes.
The walk is jointly organised by Tourism Selangor Sdn. Bhd. and Klang Municipal Council. Available on Saturday and Sunday mornings from 9am, each walk is limited to a maximum of twenty people. If you are coming in a larger group, you are required to write in formally to Tourism Selangor Sdn. Bhd. prior to your tour.
Registration for the tour begins at 9am, with the walk commencing at 9.15am. The starting point is the Sultan Abdul Aziz Royal Gallery. Depending on the pace of the participants, the tour requires at least 1.5 to 2 hours to complete.
There are six guides who capably conduct this tour. I was surprised when I learned that the average time required for a guide to pass the special test to conduct this Royal Klang Heritage Walk is one year. It is that difficult with many facts to memorise!
In Malaysia, there are only six heritage walks, including Ipoh Heritage Walk and Georgetown Heritage Walk. However, this walk in Klang is the only “royal” walk in the country.
The Royal Klang Heritage Walk takes participants to eleven landmarks. They are:
1) Sultan Abdul Aziz Royal Gallery
2) The former Chartered Bank (now Chennai Silk Sarees)
3) Royal Klang Club
4) Alam Shah Palace
5) Church of Our Lady Lourdes
6) Klang Convent School
7) Tengku Kelana Street (Little India)
8) Indian Muslim Mosque Tengku Kelana
9) Sri Nagara Thandayuthapani Temple
10) Klang Fire Station
11) Gedung Raja Abdullah (warehouse)
Check out my photos taken sometime in January 2017. Although these buildings were erected in the late 1880s or early 1990s, they are still so well maintained. That’s why I highly recommend this walking tour to friends for a glimpse of the heritage of Klang, Selangor.
