Batik products from the east coast states of Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang are some of their best exports. Even local tourists do not fail to shop for batik when they are visiting the area. Thus, it was no surprise that my trip to Kuantan included a stop at Natural Batik Village in Balok, Pahang.
Natural Batik Village reminded me of Kuala Terengganu’s Noor Arfa Craft Centre. Both establishments conduct DIY batik workshops, where visitors are taught how to colour in a batik pattern and then take it home, for a small price.
Besides batik painting, regular workshops on batik t-shirt painting and batik t-shirt tie-dye techniques are conducted. These lessons are Natural Batik Village’s main attraction for tourists. Coming to Pahang for a holiday, they have the rare opportunity to get hands-on experience and learn a local art.
For those who enjoy shopping, or wondering what souvenirs to pick up, Natural Batik Village has a large sales room with a whole range of batik products, to meet any budget. I was tempted to buy but I held on to my purse strings tightly. I have enough of stuff in my room without adding more!
If you are in this area, don’t just drop by. Roll up your sleeves and paint your own batik. It is fun.
