The annual international mission by Kelab Sukan Dan Kebajikan Media Perak (KSKMP) brought some of the delegates to Jordan this year. As in previous missions, the delegation arranged to meet up with Malaysian students enrolled in universities in the destination country.
In Jordan, currently there are almost 1,500 Malaysian students. They are enrolled in Yarmouk University for Islamic studies, and Jordan University of Science & Technology (JUST) for medicine and dentistry. Both institutions of higher learning are located in Irbid, approximately 90km north of Amman, the capital city. As you can imagine, Irbid is like a student colony, a Malaysian student township, to be precise.
The delegation of KSKMP, which comprised senior government officials and members of the media, arranged to meet up with these students one evening at their student community centre along University Street, just a stone’s throw away from Yarmouk University in Irbid. The centre, on one of the upper floors of an obscure building is rented for JOD200 per month, and is used by Malaysian students, either to organise leadership meetings, discussions, form study groups, poetry night or social gatherings.
The student leaders who attended the informal meet-up were given a prep talk by KSKMP adviser-cum-delegation leader, Datuk Akmar Hisham Mokhles, who was pleased with the warm reception extended by the large number of students who turned up. They included high achievers, young entrepreneurs as well as those involved in volunteerism.
The young men and women were indeed delighted to get to meet fellow Malaysians, and spoke Bahasa Malaysia for a change, rather than Arabic! It was certainly a fruitful two-hour gathering, where we learnt something from one another. Besides, it was also a golden opportunity to promote the State of Perak to the students via a mini quiz.
