A delegation of media members from Kelab Sukan dan Kebajikan Media Perak (KSKMP or in English, Perak Media Sports and Welfare Club) and senior government officials, led by adviser Datuk Akmar Hisham Mokhles who is the press secretary to Prime Minister YAB Dato’ Sri Najib Razak, made a courtesy call on the Malaysian Ambassador to Jordan H.E. Zakri Jaafar.
Although His Excellency was called away on official duty at the last minute, the informal visit was not in vain as embassy officials, headed by First Secretary (Head of Chancery) Ms. Mega Nopija Khalidi and her officers offered just as warm a welcome to this first Malaysian media delegation.
Speech by Datuk Akmar Hisham Mokhles
As adviser to the media club, Datuk Akmar explained the objective of KSKMP’s tour to the Middle East, which is to see for themselves the real situation in Jordan, particularly on the issues of Syrian refugees, as well as the political and religious climate in the country and in the Middle East as a whole.
Granted, five days were insufficient to understand the entire complex situation but as media practitioners, the delegates were able to quickly get a good grasp of things, rather than just depending on the propaganda of selected media channels. At the same time, these Malaysians came in peace, to carry across the message that they are indeed friendly people.
Datuk Akmar also expressed his strong support for KSKMP. According to him, this is only one of two active international-level media clubs in Malaysia.
About Kelab Sukan dan Kebajikan Media Perak
Meanwhile, club president Wan Asrudi Wan Hasan shared the expeditions and international tours that club members have undertaken over the years since his leadership in mid-2014.
From scaling Malaysia’s Mount Kinabalu to Indonesia’s Mount Rinjani and Australia’s Mount Kosciuszko; from a goodwill trip to China and cultural exchange to India, and this time, humanitarian mission to Jordan, just to name a few, all these working trips were made in the spirit of fostering better ties among media representatives as well as to keep the Malaysian flag flying high, as junior ambassadors of the country.
Of course, these activities wouldn’t have been attainable without the staunch support in the form of sponsorships from the various government agencies and private corporations.
Questions from the press
According to First Secretary (Head of Chancery) Ms. Mega Nopija Khalidi, Malaysia is strongly represented in Jordan. Besides this embassy in Amman, there are also various agencies, a handful which are not based in the embassy, to take care of the welfare of Malaysians in the country.
There are approximately 1500 Malaysian students in Jordan, pursuing various courses such as medicine and dentistry, besides religious studies. During Hari Raya Aidilfitri, the embassy hosts a celebration for these students who are unable to make it home to mark the festive occasion with their families.
Jordan is a good trading partner with Malaysia. Main Malaysian exports to Jordan include palm oil and wood furniture. In Jordan, major Malaysian investments are in the energy sector, but are currently looking into other commercial opportunities.
Advisory from the Malaysian Embassy in Amman, Jordan
Although Jordan is the gateway to Israel, Malaysians, who may hold a special permit from the Malaysian Ministry of Home Affairs (Kementerian Dalam Negeri) are advised to postpone their visit due to the on-going religious conflict in the area. It is crucial to note that Malaysia and Israel have no diplomatic ties.
