One of the places that we visited was in Sanwan Township. Interestingly, no one knows its name, because it doesn’t have one yet! Let’s just call it the Sanwan Township Park for now.

Sanwan is Mandarin for “three curves”. It is a rural township in Miaoli County, also populated by Hakka descent. A major landmark in Sanwan is Yongheshan Reservoir; this nameless park is easily its second attraction.

From the main road, it is quite a long trek to the park. I didn’t actually time it but I would say the trek was at least 20 minutes one way, over undulating ground.

Sanwan Township Park is planted with rows and rows of bald cypress trees (taxodium distichum). Different seasons of the year offer varied views and photographic effects. Another species of tree planted here is Vernicia fordii, blooming in May to June.

When I was there during wintertime in mid-January, a lot of the leaves have already fallen, and the trees indeed looked “bald”. Haha! Excuse the bad pun; I couldn’t help myself.

Sanwan Township Park is still a work in progress. I guess, when it is completed, it will be given a proper name. I can’t wait to see when it is fully developed!
