Upon returning to Kathmandu following a 7-day epic backpacking-cum-trekking adventure at Manaslu Conservation Area, my choice of accommodation was the newly-operated Hotel Jay Suites in Thamel. I spent two nights before departing for Kuala Lumpur and onwards to my hometown, Ipoh.
Having already stayed at Bouddha, Thamel was the perfect choice. This tourist hub is like Bukit Bintang of Kuala Lumpur, not so much the lights and sounds, but definitely the life! Furthermore, Thamel is within walking distance from Kathmandu’s Chinatown.
Hotel Jay Suites is a boutique deluxe hotel tucked almost at the end of a narrow side street, away from view. However, it is still strategically located in Thamel, about 5 km from Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) and 1.2 km from Kathmandu Durbar Square, situated in front of the royal palace of the former Kathmandu Kingdom.
Nepali, Indian, Chinese and Continental cuisines are served at the hotel’s coffee house, but with this hotel being in the heart of the action, guests can also easily refuel in neighbouring F&B establishments, from local to Western, morning ’til night.
Additionally, souvenir shopping is easily accomplished, only a stone’s throw from the main street, where the shopping district is located. Running low on cash? It’s not a problem as there is an ATM just by the entrance of the hotel.
There are five room categories at Hotel Jay Suites: Deluxe King-sized Room, Deluxe Twin Room, Deluxe Triple Room, Deluxe Family Room, and Single Bedroom Apartment.
All guest rooms are stylishly appointed with warm colours and natural materials, including hard wood parquet flooring. Rooms are equipped with air-conditioning, flat-screen TV with satellite HD channels, minibar and work desk.
Complimentary WiFi connection is available in guest rooms, one of the stronger connections that I have experienced of all my travels. Hair dryer is not available in-room, and has to be requested from the front desk, which was what I did as soon as I checked in.
In Kathmandu and don’t know where you should visit? The hotel’s 24-hour service-oriented English-speaking front desk staff is ever ready to assist guests to book city tours or arrange transport.
