Half-Day Tour of Royal Belum, Perak

While it is recommended that the minimum time spent in Royal Belum should be at least 3 Days / 2 Nights to have sufficient time to explore the vast state park, a half-day tour (5 – 6 hours) is still doable, although your ranger may not be too happy about it.

1. the enchanted Royal Belum with a captivating sunrise

1. the enchanted Royal Belum with a captivating sunrise

During the recent media familiarisation tour to Royal Belum, we were running on a tight schedule and only had half a day to spare. As I have mentioned in my previous post, we put up at Belum Rainforest Resort, which is located on Pulau Banding, across Temenggor Lake.

2. Furqaan on the speed boat ride to Royal Belum

2. Furqaan on the speed boat ride to Royal Belum

We departed from the private jetty of our resort at about 8am. The ride on the speed boat took about 45 minutes to an hour, after taking a short break at Sg. Tiang Base Camp. The first activity arranged for us was jungle trekking.

3. a bug rests on the blue fern - one of the sights to behold while trekking Royal Belum

3. a bug rests on the blue fern – one of the sights to behold while trekking Royal Belum

Due to the extremely hot weather even in the morning, we opted to trek at a moderate pace so as not to exert too much. However, it took us about an hour. During this hot season, there were no leeches to welcome us but trekking in a dry trail is not without its challenges. It is rocky and sandy which is slippery, too. Therefore, appropriate footwear is most recommended.

A good guide would point out to you the sights and sounds, the plants and insects, along the way. If you are lucky, you could even see the Rafflesia in bloom. For your information, there are three species of Rafflesia in Royal Belum: kerrii, cantleyi and azlanii. You will find that multiple trips here are required to hunt all of them down.

4. Sungai Kooi shower waterfall

4. Sungai Kooi shower waterfall

We then made a visit to the Sungai Kooi shower waterfall. This waterfall is known as such because of the water that showers down, rather than cascades, from a height of fifty metres. No matter how you wish you could get into the water because of the heat, swimming is prohibited in this area as it is known as a dangerous zone.

5. Kampung Aman Damai

5. Kampung Aman Damai

By then, we were dying to get wet, but before we could do so, we had to stop by at Kampung Aman Damai and get thrown back in time. While we may wonder how people can live with these bare necessities, life is such for the 105 residents of the settlement, from 17 families.

6. bathing by the bank

6. bathing by the bank

The indigenous tribe who live in Royal Belum is called the Jahai. These aboriginal people are scattered in three villages in the forest but Kampung Aman Damai is commercialised as a living heritage village.

7. house pet

7. house pet

Visitors to Kampung Aman Damai should contribute at least RM1 to enter the village. If you wish to participate in tribal games or local activities, a nominal fee is imposed. There is also a stall where traditional herbs are sold, believed to be good for various ailments such as diabetes, high cholesterol and erectile dysfunction.

8. a group of curious children

8. a group of curious children

If you are planning a trip to Kampung Aman Damai, may I suggest you bring along some chocolates and candies for the children. Other recommended items would be clothes and sarong, books and stationery as well as oral care products.

9. the village head demonstrates how to use the blowpipe

Finally, we were done with our visit to Kampung Aman Damai, which was eerily quiet compared to my earlier visit almost three years ago.

10. Sungai Ruok Fish Sanctuary

10. Sungai Ruok Fish Sanctuary

Anyway, our final pit stop in Royal Belum was Sungai Ruok Fish Sanctuary. As its name suggests, fishing is prohibited in this area. However, unlike the Sungai Kooi waterfall, swimming is allowed here. We brought along packed lunch for a picnic. If you do likewise, please do not litter.

We spent about an hour here, and then it was a short trek back to our speed boats and a 30 to 45-minute ride back to our accommodation, Belum Rainforest Resort in Pulau Banding.

If you stay in Royal Belum itself, it shortens your commute time. Nonetheless, your journey from Ipoh to Gerik will take about 2.5 hours.

I do not see myself as an outdoor adventurer and if given a choice, I do not like to get wet and dirty when I am travelling.

2. gearing up

2. gearing up

However, if I am compelled to participate in these activities, I do not hesitate to get down and grubby because I know that it wouldn’t be something that I would willingly pursue on my own. Hence, I take up the challenge – to push myself beyond my comfort zone.

Gopeng was selected as one of the places to visit for the delegation of ASEAN media who was in Perak on a familiarisation trip. What does one do in this former tin mining town besides sightseeing? Well, it is best known for its outdoor adventures with the Kampar River running through it.

4. rock formation

4. rock formation

Even though I am a Perakian, I have never indulged myself in such activities in Gopeng, so it was something that I looked forward to, albeit with apprehension. Nonetheless, I pulled up my socks and sleeves and dived right in with the rest of the delegates.

5. participants abseil within the cave

Our morning began with caving in Gua Kandu. The two plus hours of activity was quite a challenge as it was extremely dark inside, even with head lamps. Some passages were very narrow, some had steep drops and we had to climb up and down with the help of ropes.

6. there is light at the end of the tunnel

6. there is light at the end of the tunnel

The trail ended via a zipline out of the cave, followed by via ferrata down the wall. Finally, we had to descend some flights of steep stairs until we reach solid ground. Phew….

7. Ayu exits the cave via a zipline

In a way, caving in Gua Kandu to me, is moderately challenging. At least, we did not have to commando crawl and the cave was dry. Pengkalan Hulu’s Gua Gendang was much more challenging for me with the water rising up to my nose and my head already touching the ceiling of the cave.

8. the via ferrata is not as scary as initially envisioned

8. the via ferrata is not as scary as initially envisioned

Nevertheless, there were sections of the course in Gua Kandu that made me think, “Sh*t! What have I gotten myself into??” I am glad to say that at the end of it, with a little nudge, I managed to complete the course.

9. Mawardi comes out of Gua Kandu victorious

After lunch break, it was time to further challenge ourselves with whitewater rafting. It was dry season when we were there. Having less water in Kampar River doesn’t mean that it is easy to navigate through. In fact, the dry season comes with its own set of challenges. For one, we had to “jump, jump” and “bump, bump” more because we got stuck between boulders way more times than usual.

10. water confidence exercise

10. water confidence exercise

This wasn’t my first whitewater rafting adventure as I have done it before in Sabah’s Sungai Kiulu. However, here, we were put through a water confidence test prior to getting onto our inflatable rafts and as a non-swimmer, that got me really nervous, although I know that the survival skill would come in handy if I got thrown out into the river.

11. whitewater rafting along Sungai Kampar

11. whitewater rafting along Sungai Kampar

Due to the river condition, our activity took longer to complete than planned with much more energy expanded. In terms of challenge, it was also moderate. I have to give credit to my guide, Soleh, not only for his skills but also for literally throwing us into (shallow) water, making this expedition way more memorable. As the saying goes, “It’s not what you do but whom you do it with.”

Officially opened on 30th November, 2015 by Perak State Executive Councillor-cum-Chairperson for Tourism, Arts, Culture, Communications and Multimedia Dato’ Nolee Ashilin bt. Dato’ Mohd. Radzi, Cititel Express Ipoh is the city’s newest hotel. It is part of IGB Corporation Berhad’s growing stable to Cititel Express Hotels.

Although located just at Ipoh’s Rothman’s Corner, this hotel, suitable for guests who are on business trips or short family vacations, is best for those who do not have their own transport or are lazy to drive around unfamiliar roads.

This is because it is just within walking distance by crossing Jalan Sultan Idris Shah to Ipoh’s famed Old Town. This is a very happening enclave these days, especially during weekends and public holidays. As a local, I’m alerting you, you wouldn’t want to drive your car to the traffic congestion here!

Besides, the hotel provides FREE shuttle service by air-conditioned van to seven popular tourist destinations: Ipoh Railway Station, Ipoh Old Town, Concubine Lane, Dim Sum Street, Ipoh Parade Shopping Mall, Jalan Yau Tet Shin & Jalan Theatre and Movie Animation Park Studios (MAPS) when it opens this July.

5. Deluxe Quad room

5. Deluxe Quad room

Apart from MAPS, all of these attractions are within walking distance from the hotel and would take up to thirty minutes, depending on your stamina. In fact, as this is a one-way shuttle, you have to make your own way back and walking could be the best option, if a taxi is unavailable. Alternatively, you can try Uber. Sign up HERE and enjoy a free Uber ride worth RM20 (code: EMILY2U).

There are three room categories: Superior Twin, Superior Triple and Deluxe Quad (2 X Queen or 1 Queen + 1 Single). All 210 rooms offer picturesque, yet different, views of Ipoh: Ipoh Padang, Kinta River of Old Town. Standard room amenities include individually controlled air-conditioning, up to 150 movie channels on the 40-inch LED screen smart IPTV (with more than 150 channels), hair dryer and in-room safety box. Some rooms provide a mini bar and ironing board but for those that do not have these facilities, there are ironing station and water dispenser (cold, warm, hot water) on every floor.

In terms of room furnishing, I would say that it is basic but functional. My only peeve was that there are only two power points in my room and both are placed too near to each other by the workstation. The fact that they are fixed so close together limits the usage of a multi-point plug. Besides, it would make more sense to provide at least one power point by the bedside.

Complimentary high-speed WiFi internet connectivity is also offered throughout the building. Good news to international visitors who do not want to waste money on a local SIM or data card.

Many of my female friends are afraid to stay with Cititel Express Ipoh because of parking issue. This is the only building in Ipoh that provides double-deck parking to fight parking woes in the heart of Ipoh Old Town. I went to check out the parking system myself.

13. double-deck car park

13. double-deck car park

Yes, it does look scary for incompetent drivers but the hotel management has assured that there are always staff on duty who can assist with the parking. Just leave your key with the valet or security personnel and it will be taken care of.

As there are only 40+ parking bays within the building, the hotel management has also rented parking space in adjacent properties for the use of guests, especially when functions are being hosted here. So, that’s another issue settled.

Dreamville Hostel Kuala Lumpur: Clean, Comfortable, Convenient

Riding the LRT towards Gombak (Kelana Jaya Line) from KL Sentral to Setiawangsa takes only about 25 minutes and a fare of RM2.80. I was here recently to spend a night at Dreamville Hostel Kuala Lumpur, which is just a short walking distance from the Setiawangsa LRT Station.

1. Dreamville Hostel Kuala Lumpur (marked red) is just within walking distance from the Setiawangsa LRT Station

1. Dreamville Hostel Kuala Lumpur (marked red) is just within walking distance from the Setiawangsa LRT Station

This was my first hostel experience and I only checked in upon high recommendation from a friend. Dreamville meets my needs for a hostel in a few fronts – it is clean, comfortable, affordable and of course, very convenient. I like accommodation that is near LRT/metro stations and the best would be within walking distance to interchange stations.

Dreamville Hostel is actually on the first floor of a shophouse, two doors away from Hotel Seeds. It could be difficult to spot until a signboard is put up, which will be soon but not yet when I was there.

3. corridor that leads to the rooms

3. corridor that leads to the rooms

This hostel, which officially opened for business in early March this year, has three dormitories (one female, one male and one mixed) and two private rooms. The dormitories have three bunk beds each, which means they can accommodate six guests. As you can see, I got the upper bunk, which was also my first time sleeping on an upper bunk. I always take the lower bunk but it was full house that night.

4. dining table that couples as a work desk

4. dining table that couples as a work desk

I couldn’t take a photo of the room layout to respect the privacy of the other guests. One thing about staying in a dorm is that we have to be considerate of the other guests. I went to bed at 2.30am and woke up at 6am the next morning. Naturally, I had to be as quiet as I could. But then again, at RM35 +/- per night, one can’t complain about the lack of privacy or being woken up from sleep because of other guests’ schedule.

5. entertainment corner - the television streams Netflix and other online channels 24/7

The private rooms with shared bathroom, on the other hand offer more privacy. These rooms are furnished with a Queen bed. They go for RM53 +/- per night. I have been told that since the hostel opened, it has been occupied nightly thanks to long-stay guests.

6. pantry equipped with a refrigerator, water dispenser, microwave oven and more

Upon check-in, each guest is assigned a bed and provided with a pillow, blanket, clean sheets and personal locker. The key to the locker is also attached to an access card, which is needed to unlock the main door of the hostel.

7. my bed on the upper bunk - note the electricity socket and reading lamp

Accommodation comes with complimentary breakfast. Other amenities that are available for free are high-speed WiFi connectivity, use of the refrigerator, microwave oven, water boiler, water filter and reading materials. For entertainment, the television set streams movies from Netflix, Spotify and Popcorn Time, all at no extra charge.

8. wash basin and two units of washrooms

8. wash basin and two units of washrooms

During my time there, some of my friends felt like I was ‘stuck’ there. I didn’t think so. There are many food and beverage outlets nearby offering a wide range of cuisines, so meals were taken care of already. Some of these are 24-hour eateries. I also love that there are a self-service laundry mart and convenience stores in the area.

9. two shower stalls

9. two shower stalls

If you are here at the end of the week, that is a more happening time. There are the Saturday morning pasar tani (agricultural market) and Monday night market just around the corner.

Additionally, guests can opt to take up weekend activity packages arranged by the hostel, including city tours and hiking to Gunung Nuang.

But even if you decide to stay indoors, Dreamville Hostel is so comfortable, it is actually like your own home. I would definitely love to make this my base if I ever plan to be a tourist in Kuala Lumpur. After all, it is just five LRT stops to KLCC.

By the way, do you know why it is called Dreamville? That’s because the owners have named it after Dreamville, the camp grounds of Belgium’s TomorrowWorld where Tomorrowland, one of the biggest electronic music festivals in the world is held. What an interesting trivia.

It is Mother’s Day today and it is the time to reflect if we have been a good child. To me, filial piety doesn’t have to be demonstrated on Mother’s Day or Father’s Day only because it should be a daily affair.

Well, for a start, The Haven Resort Hotel & Residences are helping us along by offering a promotion too good to refuse this May and June.

The Haven wishes all mothers Happy Mother's Day

The Haven wishes all mothers Happy Mother’s Day

Receive a complimentary meal voucher worth RM150 for one night’s stay at the resort during this period by taking up the Mother’s Day (valid for May 2016) OR Father’s Day (valid for June 2016) package. Two nights’ stay for either package will get you a complimentary dinner voucher worth RM300!

And if you book BOTH Mother’s Day AND Father’s Day packages, you will be entitled to a complimentary meal voucher worth RM400!

How’s that for celebrating Mother’s and Father’s Day by the lake amidst a natural limestone setting?

For the fifth consecutive year since 2012, Wings of KKB, a 3-day bird-watching event was held last month in Kuala Kubu Bharu – Awana Hotel, Genting Highlands. This area is very popular with bird-watchers even on ordinary days. As a whole, Malaysia is ranked number 12 in the world in terms of bio-diversity.

1. we are ready to look for birds around Kuala Kubu Bharu

Do you know that some 700 species of birds have been recorded in Malaysia? Sixty of these are endemic to the region. Therefore, it is no surprise that this event continues to attract more bird enthusiasts every year from around the world, from as far away as England.

2. welcome to Kuala Kubu Bharu

Domestically, bird-watchers are increasing, which means that the awareness to conserve nature and wildlife to ensure the sustainability of eco-nature tourism products have been raised.

Due to the rich bird species population in the area, a visit to Kuala Kubu Bharu right up to Genting Highlands is an unforgettable experience for many bird-watching hobbyists.

As such, Wings of KKB, which attracted almost fifty teams this year, is an excellent event to promote Malaysia and Kuala Kubu Bharu in particular, to bird-watchers around the world. An international event such as Wings of KKB places us on the world map as a premier bird-watching destination.

As a participant of the Eat.Travel.Write Selangor International Culinary Adventure 3.0 delegation, I had the opportunity to test myself in identifying the birds that flew overhead me. When I see a bird, I see a bird, but don’t ask me what species it is.

It was good fun. Although I wouldn’t say that I am converted into a hobbyist overnight, at least I am now more aware of birds and sensitive towards their habitat.

By the way, 2017 is Visit Hulu Selangor Year so if you are into bird-watching, 2017 would be the best time to come here.

With 38 years of experience in the kitchen, Chef Farhan Wong spent seven long years concocting his all-purpose seasoning, or in his own words, all-seasoning sauce.

2. Chef Wong prepares Chicken Cheese

2. Chef Wong prepares Chicken Cheese

Named Farhan Seasoning Sauce, some of the ingredients used in the seasoning include corn oil, English mustard and light soy sauce. All in all, there are more than ten ingredients. I managed to get the secret ingredient from him and it is vinegar.

3. from left (top): season the meat with the Chef Wong's special sauce then coat the meat with flour. From left (bottom): Dip the chicken into a bowl of egg and then coat the meat with bread crumbs before putting them into the fryer. Fry till golden brown.

According to Chef Wong, even if you do not have any other sauce at home, by using his seasoning, you can cook anything you like, and they will taste just as good. Use it for vegetables, to season meat and even to fry noodles, it is suitable, without all tasting similar.

I have no reason not to believe him as he demonstrated the usage of the seasoning with his preparation of chicken cheese, chicken nuggets, chicken boxing, Chinese-style fried egg and Cantonese-style fried noodles.

I love it that one doesn’t have to marinate the meat for a long time unlike some other seasoning. It is also not necessary to add any other seasoning or sauce. However, if you want a heavier flavour, you may add in sesame oil.

If I were to use a single word to describe the works that have been done to the Square at the Ipoh Railway Station, it would be ‘Unique’. Upgraded in conjunction with the celebration of the 100th anniversary of Ipoh Town Hall, the Square now boasts seven different ‘gardens’ in one huge garden.

The seven different garden concepts are: Tropical, English, Wedding, Fantasy, Partition, Nature and Traditional. What is even more interesting is that the upgrading works, which began on May 1 to May 15, 2016, were done by the Ipoh City Council Landscape Department, using recyclables and plants obtained from the department itself.

I was very excited prior to my trip to Genting Strawberry Leisure Farm. I have never been to any strawberry farms before, either in Genting Highlands or Cameron Highlands. I guess, strawberry farms are not high on my priority list since I don’t really love the taste of the fruit.

2. fountain at Genting Highlands Strawberry Leisure Farm

It was pouring when we arrived and rain always spoil a little of my enthusiasm when I am on the road. Thunderstorm aside, I was not as impressed as I had expected to be.

The strawberries with seedlings originated from California, which were supposed to fruit around the year here at Genting Highlands due to the generally lower temperature, haven’t been very co-operative due the the El Nino effect.

4. strawberry vines

When I was there and also in Fraser’s Hill and Bukit Tinggi, these places were warmer than I have anticipated. Naturally, and unfortunately, this affected the growth of the fruits.

5. strawberry flowers

Plus, I have no idea why the fruits look tumorous. Is this also because of the weather? The ‘normal’ average temperature here is 26 degrees Celsius, as it is 1005 metres above sea leel.

Once the buds bloom, the fruits will appear in a week’s time. The fruiting cycle is three months and after five fruitings, the plant has to be replaced. There are some 10,000 plants here! The taste of the strawberries produced here is sweet and at the same time, a little sourish.

I believe that when the weather is better, the 8-year farm will be nicer to visit. Entrance fee is RM8 (adult) and RM5 (child), by the way.

Once entered, visitors could opt to purchase pre-packed strawberries at the price of RM15 per box of 250 grammes, or self-pick for RM8 per 100 grammes.

Additionally, there are other strawberry products sold here, from jams to juices, snacks and others.

Within the six-acre land is the Lavender Garden. No extra admission fee is imposed on visitors to enter the garden. Besides Lavender, there are many other types of flowers. Opened just last year, the plants are still young. I am excited to see how it will turn out later when the plants are matured.

So, would I recommend a visit to Genting Strawberry Leisure Farm? Definitely. In fact, I plan to return, but I will wait for the weather to improve before I revisit!

Bengkulu tart is a festive snack that was originated from Bangka Hulu, Bengkulu, Indonesia.

The place which we visited in the District of Hulu Selangor during our tour of Eat.Travel.Write Selangor International Culinary Adventure 3.0, the community here has strong family connections with that part of Indonesia.

3. add in coconut milk (santan)

3. add in coconut milk (santan)

The dough of the tart is made from a mixture of wheat flour, sugar, coconut milk, eggs, baking powder and oil. The time consuming part is that the dough has to be kept overnight before it can be shaped.

4. mix the batter

This baker, Pn. Maslamat, 66 years of age, makes these tarts with two different fillings: natural and pineapple.

5. decorate the tart after filling it

The natural filling is a combination of grated coconut, brown sugar, corn flour, sugar and water. As for the pineapple filling, it is homemade from the fresh pineapple fruits that are planted around the garden of the cottage.

6. brush the top of the tarts with a mixture of egg + orange colouring

Before these tarts are placed in the traditional oven that is fired by coconut husks, they are coated with a mixture of eggs that have been added with orange colouring, to give the tarts an orangy shine.

The tarts are only baked for about five minutes in the hot oven and removed once they changed to brownish in colour.

This was my first time seeing this leaf-like tart. So, naturally I have never tasted it until now. It is chunky with only a little filling. I would have preferred them to be more refined with a larger portion of filling.
