I’d say that Ixora Hotel is an unassuming business class hotel but because it is adjoining Megamall Penang (mall), it could also serve as a family hotel. Another plus point of this hotel is that it is just a short 20-minute drive from the Bayan Lepas International Airport via Penang Bridge.

When in Kajang, it is a must to feast on satay, as many skewers as we could. One of the more popular stalls that we went to for dinner one evening was Willy Satay, at Ramal Food Junction (food court) in Taman Ramal Indah.

I have no idea why Willy Satay became the satay stall of choice – I was told their popularity only boomed a few years ago.

Throughout that evening, their tens of grills were working non-stop and still, the queue for food was exceptionally long.

3. fulfilling a satay order

I was lucky not to have to wait that long as we already made advanced booking for beef and chicken satay. The other two types of satay available here are lamb and innards.

I noticed that unlike the usual satay, Willy Satay don’t have too much fat pierced between the chunks of meat, which is how I like my satay served.

Furthermore, the peanut sauce was awesome and the satay that was grilled to perfection could be savoured as they were without additional sauce.

I am someone who has no patience to wait for my food to get cooked. Thus, steamboat and grill are my least favourite eating places. As such, my recent dinner at Grill & Such in Seri Kembangan was almost like a new experience for me.

Grill and Such Seri Kembangan Selangor

With the motto “Taste the thrill”, Grill & Such, which was opened in October 2015, offers locals the chance to dine on local food in Korean style.

2. a set of 13 items from Grill & Such

Owner Fadzil Shaari from Sungai Siput, a trained architect with his own firm, loves Korean food himself and thought that it would be a good idea to set up a similar eatery where diners can bond over a low-carbohydrate meal.

Featuring timber panelling against bright lights, Fadzil believes that this ambience would improve one’s appetite. It certainly did to mine, after all the trouble grilling my food and being bombed with sizzling oil. LOL

4. it’s time to grill ‘em

The grill set has 13 items marinated with homemade sauce, but I opted to have mine without beef and mutton, so my table had only eleven items. Nonetheless, diners may order from the à la carte or go for another round of the 13-item set.

Perak Media Show India the Essence of 1 Malaysia

$

0

Ten months following a successful goodwill expedition to Beijing, China, a delegation of media representatives under the Perak Media Sports and Welfare Club, led by the Prime Minister’s Press Secretary, Datuk Akmar Hisham Mokhles, made a historic visit to India’s Golden Triangle.

Golden Triangle India

1. the delegation of Perak Media at Taj Mahal

Datuk Akmar serves as adviser to the media club. Also part of the delegation were representatives from the Ipoh City Council, Perak State Government, Perak Menteri Besar’s Office, Federal Government, non-government organisations and corporate sponsors such as Impiana Hotel Ipoh.

While the expedition to Beijing, China last year was undertaken in the wake of the first anniversary of the loss of Malaysia Airlines flight 370 (MH370) and in conjunction with the 40th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Malaysia and China, this cultural exchange expedition to India was no less serious or important.

Golden Triangle India

2. at the entrance of Taj Mahal, garbed in traditional attire

This is because India boasts the second largest population in the world after China, at an estimated 1.3 billion people. At the current birth rate of fifty per day, the country will soon overtake China.

This delegation to the Golden Triangle of India, namely New Delhi – Agra – Jaipur, of which I was a member, made a courtesy call at the High Commission of Malaysia in New Delhi. We were received by His Excellency Datuk Naimun Ashakli Mohammad and his senior officers.

Golden Triangle India

3. making a courtesy call at the High Commission of Malaysia in New Delhi

According to H.E. Datuk Naimun, there are about 5,000 Malaysian students in India pursuing medicine, dentistry, engineering, Information Technology and business courses. These are highly motivated individuals who have no time to spare to get involved in undesirable activities that would jeopardise the good name of their motherland.

Meanwhile, there are about a hundred other Malaysians who work in India, either with the Malaysian government or in multi-national corporations.

Golden Triangle India

4. inside the new High Commission of Malaysia in New Delhi

Said Datuk Naimun, “Malaysians who visit or transit India are advised to register themselves with the High Commission in New Delhi so that their welfare and safety could be monitored. This should be the standard procedure for all Malaysian travellers to any other country, not just India.

“Also, Malaysians who would like to visit India should check the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the latest advisories.”

Golden Triangle India

5. an obligatory group photo with the Malaysian High Commissioner in New Delhi, His Excellency Datuk Naimun Ashakli Mohammad (standing back row in tie) and his officers

During the press conference, Datuk Naimum also took the opportunity to share with the delegation the roles and functions of the High Commission as well as exchange views on the latest developments on Malaysia-India bilateral ties.

Following that official visit, the delegates visited popular tourist spots such as Agra Fort and Taj Mahal, distributing travel brochures of Malaysia as well as Perak, in a run-up to Visit Perak Year 2017.

Golden Triangle India

6. another group photo with the Malaysian High Commissioner in New Delhi, His Excellency Datuk Naimun Ashakli Mohammad (standing back row in tie) and his officers

Garbed in traditional costumes, all 42 members of the delegation presented themselves as junior ambassadors of the country, explaining to curious Indians the colourful cultures and traditions of the different races of Malaysia.

And that began our Cultural Exchange Programme by showing to the Indians the essence of 1 Malaysia. Many of them were interested to know about our country and people, and asked why we come in different skin tones.

Golden Triangle India

7. inside Agra Fort

True to the media club’s objective to do charitable work whenever possible, during our trip, copies of Al-Quran and Surah Yasin, which were sponsored by Restoran Ali Maju Sdn. Bhd. were donated to Shahi Jama Mosque in Old Delhi.

For many Malaysians, India is a country that is not one of the top countries to take a vacation in. And so, this trip was a tremendous eye-opener for us where we witnessed for ourselves how the poor live by the side of the roads, making a living by hawking their wares, usually souvenirs.

Golden Triangle India

8. distributing travel brochures of Perak and Malaysia to other visitors at the Agra Fort

Hungry children beg for handouts. To help or not is a difficult decision to make. And then there are some kids who just want to earn some money, and not take your money for nothing.

Returning to Malaysia, and later to Ipoh, after five days in India, one is enveloped by a sense of peace. No more senseless honking throughout the road trips. Also, the beautiful greenery of our cityscape is a sight to behold. Let’s not forget about the fresh, clean air!

Golden Triangle India

9. Agra Fort – one of the destinations visited in India to promote Malaysian culture

A trip to India and back makes us appreciate the life we have in Malaysia so much more. Seriously, there is nothing much to complain about, compared to the desperate destitution of the majority of the poor population in India.

This expedition was made possible by the hardworking committee of Perak Media Sports and Welfare Club. Perak Media Sports and Welfare Club or Kelab Sukan dan Kebajikan Media Perak (KSKMP) is one of the most active media clubs in Malaysia. Therefore, although it is a state-level club, it is a club that is recognised to represent the media of the country.

Golden Triangle India

10. promoting Perak and Malaysia as ideal tourist destinations upon checking in at a hotel in New Delhi, India

The club, established in 2008, is committed in a range of activities, particularly charitable programmes, besides looking into the welfare of members and their family. Prior to last year’s expedition to Beijing, the club had organised trips to Australia, Indonesia and other parts of Malaysia.

Current Club President is Wan Asrudi Wan Hasan, bureau chief of Harian Metro Perak.

Perak Passes For MAPS Sold at Special Prices For a Limited Time

Asia’s first animation theme park, Movie Animation Park Studios or MAPS in short, is scheduled to open in July/August 2016, and I can’t be more excited. As an Ipohite, I believe that the city needs a tourism product of this magnitude to spur the economy.

Believe me, when it does open, many locals will surely benefit from it. For a start, MAPS will create approximately five hundred job opportunities within its six themed zones that will boast forty attractions.

Movie Animation Park Studios

Mr. Peabody (L) and Sherman

The good news is that Perakeans have the benefit of being “locals” and will enjoy a steep discount on the Park’s specially-issued “Perak Pass”, but for a limited time only!

MAPS began selling these passes last weekend at the start of a massive nationwide roadshow. This weekend (30th & 31st Jan), the crew will be at AEON MALL Ipoh Klebang from 10am to 10pm where more Perak Passes will be made available.

So, how much is it, you ask? It is RM180 per adult and RM150 per child (3 to 11 years old). During this pre-opening special offer of Buy 3 Free 1, it works out to be RM135 per pass ONLY!

This pass allows the holder to enter the park for an unlimited number of times throughout the year. Tell me, is it not worth it?!

Other Passes sold during this roadshow are Day Pass and Annual Pass.

Day Pass is for ONE visit only and is priced at RM155 (adult) and RM125 (child). Pre-opening special offer for this pass is Buy 1 Free 1.

For Annual Pass valid for twelve months, it is priced at RM280 (adult) and RM250 (child). Pre-opening special offer for this pass is Buy 3 Free 1.

Remember, these pre-opening special offers are valid for a very limited time and only during this roadshow!

Also, mark your calendar for “My Dream Carnival” which will be held at the MAPS Entrance (Persiaran Meru Raya 3, Ipoh), during the weekend of 27th and 28th February, 2016 from 10am to 6pm.

A host of fun-filled activities have been lined up, including promotions, performances and a chance to win fantastic prizes! Admission is free, so bring along your family and friends!

I’ll be there, so should you!

Ten Things To Know Before Your Trip To India

$
0
0

India

1. Taj Mahal, Agra

India is such a vast country that although I visited it recently, I don’t claim that I know the nation or her people well. My friends and I spent just about five days visiting the Golden Triangle of New Delhi, Agra and Jaipur but much time was spent on the three road trips that lasted five to six hours each.

India

2. Agra Fort, Agra

Even so, after doing my research and speaking to people who have travelled to India more times than I have, plus my own experience, here is a list that I have compiled that would make your preparation for a trip to India a lot easier.

India

3. Agra Fort, Agra

1) Vaccinations

Although I did not personally get any vaccinations prior to my trip to India, there are two injections that one could get: against Hepatitis A and Influenza. Allow at least three months to complete the course before your trip.

India

4. Amber Fort across Lake Moata in Jaipur

2) Avoid the Delhi Belly

This is the dreaded stomach and intestinal infection that one could get from drinking contaminated water or eating raw food that has been contaminated by such water in India. It strikes the best of us and it upsets not just one’s stomach, but also travel plans.

What you can do is to avoid drinking water from unknown sources, such as tap water, ice cubes and opened bottles, or eating exposed fruits or salads.

Only drink bottled water of these brands: Bisleri, Kinley, Aquafina and Catch, a local brand but has been proven fine.

Even for brushing teeth, mineral water should be used.

To prepare my guts, I took a month’s worth of probiotics before I left for India. Also, if you could get hold of a bottle of olive leaf extract, spray it in your mouth every morning while in India as it lines your stomach and helps increase your immunity.

India

5. ascending Amber Fort in Jeeps

3) Carry your passport with you

This is not only a safety measure because you don’t want to leave such an important document at the hotel. A reliable source has warned us that foreigners are stopped by the Indian police all the time and made to show their identity. If you can’t produce any identification, they could make life difficult for you.

India

6. view of the village from Amber Fort, Jaipur

4) English is the medium of communication

Being a former British colony, almost everyone in India speaks English. Those who are involved in the tourism industry, even young street children, can speak a smattering of other foreign languages.

Although one could communicate comfortably with Indians in English, the only word they don’t understand is “No”. Street vendors whom you reject by saying “no” will take that as a challenge and try even harder to sell their wares to you.

Even for those Indians who are not trying to sell you anything, you hardly would hear a “no” from them. Ask them to help you with anything, it is always a “can” and “yes”. Well, it’s up to you to believe/trust them.

India

7. visitors to Amber Fort in Jaipur can also opt for the elephant ride at Rs1200 per animal

5) Put up the “Do Not Disturb” sign

My friend passed me this tip just before my flight. Even though I stayed at star-rated hotels, I heeded his advice. India observes a tipping culture which is fine if you have used their service(s).

The problem is that hotel staff could come knocking at your door to check on this and that, ask if all is good for you, and refuse to leave!

So, what do you do but to tip him so that he would leave your room? And before you know it, another staff would come knocking at your door shortly after that! And another, and another…..

India

8. leaving Amber Fort in a Jeep

6) Keep small change of 10 Rupees handy

It always helps to have small change handy for street kids or for the use of public toilets. 10 Rupees is the smallest note available. Street beggars would try to get money from you. It’s up to you to give or not but realise that by giving to one person, you are inviting the rest to swamp you.

India

9. Hawa Mahal (Wind Palace), Jaipur

7) Bargain

Almost everywhere you go shopping, you can bargain the price lower, even when it is stated as a “fixed price” item. If you purchase from street vendors, the more desperate they are to offload their goods to you, the lower they can go on the price, so that they can get some cash from you.

This doesn’t mean that you should press them so low that they don’t get to survive. Let it go if it’s just, say, 20 Rupees. The amount wouldn’t make him rich or would it make you poor.

India

10. Fatehpur Sikri

8) The barter system is still practised

Believe it or not, a friend got himself a small souvenir in Jaipur in exchange for a shawl. Whether it was worth the value, my friend thought it was a good deal when he was made that offer.

In New Delhi, a vendor also offered to exchange his saree for my watch. I declined.

India

11. on the streets of Delhi

9) Be prepared for spicy food

India is a land of curries. All sorts of spicy food is available, and it is too bad that not everyone can stomach that amount of spice. I witnessed with my own eyes a young tourist who suffered a severe gastric attack while he and his parents were touring Amber Fort in Jaipur.

So, watch what you eat and understand your body.

India

12. at a textile factory

10) Local SIM / mobile data card

When in India, recommended telcos are Airtel or Vodafone.

These are required at the point of purchase:
– 2 copies of colour passport photographs
– photocopy of the personal details page of your passport
– photocopy of your Indian visa
– photocopy of document to prove your home address in your country of residence (passport, driving licence, MyKad)
– proof of where you will be staying in India
– proof of father’s name

India

13. in Parliament House, New Delhi

SIM card is activated within 24 hours (at the earliest), after a confirmation call is made to your mobile phone for verifying the details provided in your application. However, you need to be in the same city of purchase when it is being activated.

If you are travelling to several locations in India, you need to get roaming activated on the SIM. The SIM card is only valid for a three-month period after which it will have to be reactivated.

India

14. to Sarojini Nagar Market, New Delhi

If you plan a long trip to India, it is worth this hassle. If it is a short trip, and it is essential for you to have a local number or mobile data, you can purchase a pre-activated card. Usually your tour guide can settle this for you. However, be prepared to pay up to Rs1000 for the card.

India

15. visitors in colourful rented costumes get ready for a photo shoot across the Water Palace (Summer Palace)

As you can see from my list, I made no mention about keeping your belongings safe or to not follow strangers around. These are safety precautions that we observe wherever we are, even in our own hometown.

No doubt, many people carry a negative perception about India due to the many violent sex crimes in the recent past but if you are visiting in a group or stick to a couple of trusted friends, India will take your breath away, even if they are just ruins of palaces and old cities.

India

16. a street vendor

Also, India will make you realise how you have taken for granted clean water and fresh air. Also, the comfortable life that you lead at home.

So, would I recommend India to you? Yes, but open up your mind to the colours and sounds of India and you will enjoy the country a whole lot more.

Uber NOW in Ipoh!

Despite the recent controversy, the mobile ride-hailing company Uber, is now in Ipoh!

For a start, Uber service is only planned for the month of February 2016, to capitalise on the expected influx of Ipohites and other visitors who will be in Ipoh during the Chinese New Year season.

Uber Ipoh

the Uber team during the launch in Ipoh

Ipoh is the fourth city to offer Uber, after Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Johor Bahru.

Depending on demand, the service may be extended, after this month-long response has been evaluated.

As a regular Uber rider in Kuala Lumpur, I have been waiting for the service to roll out in Ipoh. Now that it has been launched, hopefully Uber will be here longer than one month!

I personally feel that Ipoh is not an easy city to navigate without your own transport, no thanks to unreliable public transport. With Uber around, residents and visitors will have a better, more competitive option to move around the city.

If you have not been pampered by the convenience of Uber yet, sign up for the service by downloading the Uber application (Andriod / iOS) on your phone, then key in EMILY2U to enjoy a free Uber ride worth RM20. SIGN UP HERE!

Event: Launch of Uber in Ipoh
Venue: The Deck Gastro Bar, Ipoh

Promoting a laid back lifestyle and providing an informal platform to socialise, Cafe dé Rasta in Ipoh, which opened for business on Feb 6, 2016, is the new place to be seen.

2. the place to hang out

2. the place to hang out

No doubt, it is a café as its name suggests but food is secondary here because the multiracialism is what makes Cafe dé Rasta stands apart from the other hipster cafés that are mushrooming in town.

3. Cafe dé Rasta

The Dutch or those who have visited the Netherlands before could mistake the green, yellow and red colours on the logo of Cafe dé Rasta as a Holland coffeeshop (or koffieshop) but no, weed is not on the menu as drugs are illegal in Malaysia.

While Rastafarianism and these Rasta colours denote an entirely different definition altogether in Africa and the rest of the world, here in Ipoh, it is a social community that celebrates life and love for all people.

When I was there a couple of days ago, it was as though I walked into the General Assembly of the United Nations. Yup, the people came from so many different countries, I couldn’t count them on all my fingers.

As you could imagine, Cafe dé Rasta is a place for cultural exchange among the different nationalities and in general, a starting point for visitors to get to know about Ipoh.

7. regular menu

Although I have said that food plays a secondary role at Cafe dé Rasta, which is owned by three friends, there is no denying that food keeps people together. Adhering to its Rasta theme, the dishes served here distinctly feature all three colours of green, yellow and red.

One of the partners, Mac, is the head chef who displays a deep passion for serving healthy food. Upon his return from the United States after living there for twelve years, this is his third café business in Ipoh, so, he is no novice when it comes to whipping up dishes that suit both local and Western palate.

Mac’s girlfriend, Hannah, is in charge of the desserts. They are to die for, as you can see from these photos.

Besides the regular menu, both Mac and Hannah rotate different items either as sets or specials. Moreover, they cater to private functions as well, even food and wine pairings. Obviously, for these, prior reservation has to be made.

Basically, what Cafe dé Rasta offers is premium food at affordable prices. You’d be glad to know that there’s no service charge or GST (Goods and Services Tax), which means more bang for your buck.

One of the partners, Eva, manages the hostel, Eloft, above the café. Opened in July 2015, it is an air-conditioned one-room hostel that has seven double-decker beds, so it can accommodate fourteen guests concurrently.

The rate per bed per night is just RM30 (regular) or RM35 (peak). Guests enjoy the use of a personal locker, free drinking water, WiFi internet. As a safety precaution, access to the hostel is through electronic key card.

As Eloft Hostel is centrally located in the heart of Ipoh (opposite the seven rainbow-coloured shop houses), this youth hostel is extremely popular among backpackers, hence the United Nations General Assembly scenario at the café which I described earlier.

In collaboration with Kelab Sukan & Kebajikan Media Perak (in English: Perak Media Sports and Welfare Club), Persatuan Kontraktor Melayu Malaysia Negeri Perak (Perak Malay Contractors Association Malaysia) invited some thirty media representatives from Perak for an official visit to Medan, Indonesia.

1. the Malaysian delegation arrives at Universitas Panca Budi, Medan, Indonesia

The objective was to strengthen the working relationship between media counterparts in both countries, and ultimately within members of ASEAN, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. Both Malaysia and Indonesia are members of ASEAN.

The three-day visit to Medan saw the delegation, led by the Chairman of Persatuan Kontraktor Melayu Malaysia Negeri Perak (PKMM) Datuk Wira Jamaluddin Bin Hj. Abdul Rahim (Uncle Jamal) making its first stop at the private university of Universitas Panca Budi.

Prior to going on a walking tour within the six-hectare main campus in Daerah Halvetia in Medan, the delegates were given a brief of the university and the courses offered.

Unlike other universities, Universitas Panca Budi educates students from kindergarten level right up to postgraduate studies. There are currently about 35,000 students, where 10,000 of them are taking degree courses. The university is well-known for its engineering, business, education and agricultural faculties.

Since a year ago, the university has entered into a joint venture with University Sains Malaysia (USM) to offer an e-learning programme, the first Indonesian university to conduct e-learning courses by a Malaysian university.

Despite receiving zero financial support from the government, simply because there are 3,300 universities in Indonesia, it aims to achieve a World Class University status by 2033. It is currently the top university in North Sumatra.

During our visit to the university, Datuk Wira Jamaluddin donated Rp3,000,000 to the institution of higher learning. His donation was matched by other committee members of PKMM who are also in the delegation: Rp3,000,000 from Tuan Hj. Jamil Bin Ariffin as well as Rp1,000,000 each from Tuan Haji Ibnu Ruslan Bin Haji Mohd. Termizi and Tuan Syed Badrul.

PKMM also donated Rp3,000,000. The total of Rp11,000,000 came up to be approximately MYR3500.

Uncle Jamal has since been tasked with a heavier responsibility to advise all UMNO Clubs in Indonesia. There are fourteen such clubs in the country.

Over Nasi Padang at Rumah Makan & Buffet Famili, members of the club, who are university students in Medan, shared with us their challenges in keeping the spirit of UMNO alive, particularly after they have completed their studies and have returned to Malaysia to pursue their respective careers.

Of the approximately 1100 Malaysian students in Indonesia, about 400 of them are members of Kelab UMNO Medan. The club has been awarded “Top 5 UMNO Clubs in the World” for the past four consecutive years, out of almost eighty such clubs in the world.
