1. warm hospitality by staff of Resorts World Kijal

The invitation for a vacation at Resorts World Kijal came at a most opportune time; right after wrapping up a book project which caused me to sit in front of the computer for ten months, no less. So, it was time to let my hair down and not think of work at all for three days.

A road trip to Terengganu from Ipoh is a ten-hour journey but as I departed from Kuala Lumpur, it was only about five to six hours. Not difficult to endure even for senior citizens.

I’ve been to Terengganu numerous times over these past four years but did not have the chance to check out Resorts World Kijal. It was known as Awana Kijal but underwent a rebranding exercise not too long ago. So, it was yet another reason for me to head out to the East Coast. Boy, have I missed some of the most pristine sandy beaches!

If you do not know yet, Resorts World Kijal is located along the east coast in Kijal, Kemaman. This luxury resort is THE ultimate getaway for those who are looking for some sea, sand and surf.

The five-star rating is not only based on the sheer size of the property but it has a matching hospitality service. I was definitely pampered through and through during my three-day stay there.

My Premier Seaview room was not of the highest category of rooms but I did have the best views.

An enchanting scene greeted me every morning, so much so that I wanted to stay in my room for as long as possible but then the most generous international buffet spread was waiting for me at Restoran Kampong Meraga Beris, which also, as you can see, provides yet another amazing view to the pool and the sea in the horizon.

However, if you think that a retreat at Resorts World Kijal is nothing more than frolicking on the beach, there is way more fun to be had here. Besides a round of golf, which the resort is well known for, there are sea and land sports to indulge in, as well as nature walk.

If you are game to wake up at 6.30am, you will be able to catch the glorious sunrise as you walk by the endless virgin private beach of the resort. I am not such a good photographer but I do have a couple of shots to boast about from my morning activity!

During my weekend at Resorts World Kijal, one of the most asked questions by friends was how much are the room rates. Well, the resort is currently running a promotion until 31st December, 2016.

There are three packages being offered: Kijal Weekend Promotion, Kijal Weekend Golf Package, and Turtle Watching Package. Choose one, or choose all!

14. Deluxe Lovers Room

14. Deluxe Lovers Room

Turtle watching is an activity that one should participate in while in Terengganu. It’s seasonal and I know of friends who had visited Terengganu way more times than me and had not even found the opportunity to see turtles.

Well, worry not because Resorts World Kijal will ensure that guests who take up the Turtle Watching Package get to experience turtle watching or turtle egg planting at the hotel hatchery. Guests can also help release turtle hatchlings to the sea. It is a very profound experience as we watch the baby turtles swim against the ferocious waves of the South China Sea.

15. release of turtle hatchlings into South China Sea

15. release of turtle hatchlings into South China Sea

During my stay, I was able to help release turtle hatclings into the sea. I tell you, no matter how many times I have done this before, I get extremely emotional EVERY TIME!

At Resorts World Kijal, I also had the chance to try turtle egg planting. This initiative was taken up by the resort just some two years ago. The turtle eggs that have been collected are planted in the sand to be hatched in a 60-day cycle. This is a very critical process as inappropriate handling of the egg would cause the embryo to die, hence, failure to hatch.

16. turtle egg planting

16. turtle egg planting

Hopefully, all parents would bring their kids to participate in this activity, letting them know why it is so important to support turtle conservation.

For every one thousand hatchlings released into the sea, only one would survive to live till adulthood. By the way, this Turtle Watching Package includes a three-day, two-night stay in a Premier Seaview room, inclusive of breakfast for two. Price is RM670 nett.

17. golf course

17. golf course

Meanwhile, the Kijal Weekend Golf Package is value for money at only RM276 (or RM138 per person). This package includes one-night stay in a Deluxe room with a unique work of art deco bathtub, and a round of golf in the championship 18-hole course for two.

As for the Kijal Weekend Promotion, it comes with a night’s stay in a Deluxe room for RM199 or Premier Seaview room at RM249. Both room options come with breakfast for two at the resort’s Restoran Kampong Meraga Beris.

Obviously, for a resort that boasts 340 rooms, there are other room and suite categories to choose from. I was particularly impressed with the suite that offers a private jacuzzi bathtub in the garden that has a direct exit to the beach! Another category of accommodation is the Duplex unit that offers two rooms on the lower floor and two more on the upper floor. The Duplex is currently going at RM1550 per night.

Oh yes, I’ve stayed at many different classes of accommodation but Resorts World Kijal was the only one which provided me with sleepwear during my stay there. It was in the form of the comfortable Baju Kedah and traditional Terengganu batik sarong. If I didn’t know better, I would have brought my set of sleepwear home.

Some people may ask how one whiles away time at Resorts World Kijal. Well, Kuala Terengganu is just two hours away by road and it is possible to sign up for a day tour of Kuala Terengganu and catch all the sights the town has to offer, PLUS shop for some local delights at Pasar Payang.

For those who do not fancy four hours on the road to and fro, there are nearer tourist attractions to visit in Kemaman itself, which could be arranged by the resort. It is also a good idea to just spend time in the resort. There’s the swimming pool for adults and children.

Or how about indulging in a pampering session at Taman Sari Royal Heritage Spa? Top Six Reasons Why Haven Is THE Place To Stay

Since Ipoh was listed by Lonely Planet as the No. 6 place in Asia to visit for 2016, I have been inundated with enquiries from friends and readers on what to do, what to eat and where to stay while they plan their Ipoh destination.

It is no easy task for an Ipohite to list down ALL that one could see, eat and do in the city. A visitor needs to know the kind of experience he is looking for from his trip to Ipoh.

The Haven Resort Hotel & Residences

The Haven Resort Hotel & Residences

In this first of a series of articles, I am going to list down the top six reasons why The Haven should be your accommodation of choice while you are in Ipoh.

i) Geological wonder

The Haven is home to a 280-million-year-old 14-storey high rock that is a geological wonder. According to Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) Shell Chair in Petroleum Geosciences Prof Dr Bernard Pierson, who dated the rock, there are only four such formations in the world.

The other three are in Guilin (China), Halong Bay (Vietnam) and Phuket (Thailand). This one is known as Rockhaven, a name that was selected through a contest from five years ago.

Rockhaven

Rockhaven

This Rockhaven from the Permian Period is an amazing sight at night when it is lighted. It makes an awesome backdrop for photography.

ii) Pristine, natural environment

The Haven is the place to be for anyone who seeks an escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. While the resort hotel is located in Ipoh, it is on the fringe of the city – away from the hassle and noise and yet within reach from all the amenities and conveniences that a city offers.

Brazilian Fern Tree

Brazilian Fern Tree

Whether you opt to sit at the al fresco section of Cuisines (restaurant) by the 4-acre calming lake or to sit at your balcony and be surrounded by karst limestone hills rising from the valley floor, the priceless serenity is not something that is easy to find elsewhere.

butterfly

butterfly

The Haven is like a “hidden” paradise of nature – more than 80% of the entire resort is natural, left untouched by development. The limestone hills will continue to be there for millions of years.

iii) 5-Star international-class resort hotel

Many people have the misconception that a resort hotel that is rated five stars would surely come with a matching price tag. Well, this is not the case, fortunately, for The Haven. Suites go for as low as RM560+ per night only – rates vary according to the size of the suites and, of course, the season.

The Haven Resort Hotel & Residences

The Haven Resort Hotel & Residences

While The Haven does not come with a matching price tag, it does, however, come with a matching hospitality service. Therefore, expect to enjoy the best service from the well-trained staff during your stay at The Haven.

iv) Healthy lifestyle

Staying at The Haven Resort Hotel & Residences, one naturally adopts a healthier lifestyle.

The Haven’s Clubhouse features a modern and fully-equipped gym with the latest gear for cardio workout, weight lifting or stretching exercise. There is also a comprehensive selection of training equipment, including exercise bikes, treadmills, running machines, leg press, abdominal bench press, fat grip bars and free weight.

the Clubhouse

With floor-to-ceiling glass windows, looking out to the surrounding lush greenery, you will be refreshed as though you are working out right in the middle of nature.

jogging track

Within the Clubhouse are facilities for a variety of racquet sports such as badminton, squash and table tennis. And of course, around the resort is a jogging track for those who prefer exercising in the great outdoors, while enjoying the scenic view that the property offers.

seahorse-shaped swimming pool

seahorse-shaped swimming pool

Also, let’s not forget the 60-metre long seahorse-shaped swimming pool that simply invites one to go for a swim, or at least, a dip. The setting of The Haven simply inspires one to keep healthy and enjoy the fresh air during one’s stay there.

The Haven is fringed by forested, hilly terrain. So, even if you do “nothing” here, the clean, fresh air alone promotes better health.

v) International award-winning restaurant

The Halal-certified Cuisines, one of the F&B outlets within The Haven, is well known for its wholesome, healthy menu, where food is prepared with the freshest of ingredients and without preservatives, monosodium glutamate (MSG) or artificial additives.

In addition to Asian, Western and Mediterranean cuisines, it serves the best of local favourites such as Ipoh Chicken Rice, Singapore Laksa, Cantonese-style Wat Tan Hor (noodles), Nasi Lemak and Seafood Char Kway Teow. The menu lists not fewer than eighty dishes.

Set in a pristine natural environment, the restaurant boasts an al fresco section which overlooks a calm lake ringed by untouched limestone hills and the 280 million-year-old beauty of a limestone rock named Rockhaven.

In short, the award-winning Cuisines (2016 Luxury Hotel Restaurant – Country Winner) offers an extraordinary natural ambience and a healthy exciting array of culinary favourites, a combination of experience unmatched by any other hotel venue or restaurant in Malaysia.

Do take note that Cuisines is only open to residents and guests of The Haven Resort Hotel & Residences, as well as guests of guests. So, this is another reason why this resort hotel is the MUST STAY place in Ipoh.

vi) Easy accessibility

If you are taking a flight or ETS (train) to Ipoh, it is easy to arrive at The Haven Resort Hotel & Residences. Just hail a cab / Uber or arrange for pickup service with The Haven Resort Hotel & Residences. This way, you save yourself the hassle of finding your way, lugging heavy luggage all over town.

The following are driving instructions from both Kuala Lumpur and Penang. As you can see, Ipoh is well-connected via the North-South Expressway.

Driving from Kuala Lumpur via North-South Expressway:
Drive past Ampang toll gate. After 0.5km, exit Tambun and turn left until you come to the traffic lights. Turn left again, drive straight for about 3 – 4km until you come to the junction to The Haven.

The Haven Resort Hotel & Residences is the third exit on your right after Lost World of Tambun and The Banjaran Hotsprings Retreat.

The duration from the North-South Expressway would take approximately 3.5 hours.

Driving from Penang via North-South Expressway:
Take the Tambun exit and turn left. Drive for about 3km to arrive at the right junction that turns in to The Haven Resort Hotel & Residences.

This trip would take you about 2 hours, or less.

So, here are only six reasons why The Haven is the MUST STAY place in Ipoh should you visit this colonial-hipster café city. Obviously, there are way more reasons but that’s for you to discover why The Haven is one of the finest eco-resort of its class in Malaysia.

Another milestone was marked by Ipoh’s The Haven Resort Hotel & Residences last Friday with the winning of Asia Pacific CSR Award in Excellence in Hotel Management 2016. The awards event was jointly organised by Asia Pacific CSR Council and JCI Achiever.

The Asia Pacific CSR Council and JCI Achiever, in support of The United Nations Global Compact, presented the 5th Asia Pacific CSR Forum. Revopackers Beds and Bunks, Kuala Lumpur

1. Revopackers Beds and Bunks

I transit Kuala Lumpur many times and each time, I get a headache looking for a night’s accommodation. Depending on how ‘rich’ I feel (very rarely!), I am not always willing to splurge on top class accommodations. Besides, because I depend on public transport, I try to look for somewhere that is near to the LRT and/or monorail station.

2. a climb up to the second floor (or third depending on where you come from)

Recently, between trips, I needed to stay somewhere near the monorail station. My friend, Eeman, recommended Revopackers Beds and Bunks, which is just a few minutes walk to Imbi monorail station AND it is also just a few minutes walk to the Hang Tuah LRT station. Perfect!

Using Instant Street View, I found that it is just around the corner from Berjaya Times Square and as I needed to look for electronic accessories, it is also near to Low Yat Plaza. Perfecto!

So, without much else to consider, I made my reservation via Facebook private message. I have no qualms about putting up at a dorm, after my stay at Dreamville Hostel Kuala Lumpur earlier this year. Yes, hostels may not be everyone’s type of accommodation but then we get what we pay for and I accept that.

Upon arrival, after climbing up two flights of stairs, I checked in and was handed a complimentary shoe bag. Didn’t have a need for it but I accepted anyway, as a souvenir.

As mentioned earlier, Revopackers was only my second experience in a Kuala Lumpur backpackers’ lodge, or hostel, if you will, although I wasn’t a backpacker. Anyway, comparing both my experiences, Revopackers has the convenience of an en suite bathroom (with water heater) for each room, which means, I only have to fight for bathroom time with five other people, or fewer.

8. room for six

Revopackers offers accommodation options of shared dorm rooms that accommodate up to six guests as well as private dorms for couples. They do have female dorms, so for those who worry about privacy, there is no need to.

Oh yes, there’s complimentary WiFi and free use of a internet-enabled desktop computer for guests. In addition, guests can enjoy a complimentary simple breakfast of bread and spread, before checking out or start the day exploring Kuala Lumpur.

For those who cook, the free access to the kitchen and refrigeration is most welcome. Cook for one or ten, it is your call.

Although I spent less than 24 hours in the area, I can tell that Revopackers is strategically located within walking distance from Jalan Alor and all the street food of Kuala Lumpur, and it is also just a short ride to restaurants and bars of Changkat. I actually spent the previous days enjoying Changkat’s F&B scene, so I know.

Mitsui Outlet Park + Free Shuttle Bus Service Schedule

One year after its opening, I finally had the opportunity to check out Mitsui Outlet Park. I admit that the prices of most branded items are out of my budget but they do have some good bargains sometimes and I love their pop-up stores (short-term tenants), too.

Mitsui Outlet Park, KLIA Sepang

Mitsui Outlet Park, KLIA Sepang

Also, the food and beverage prices are regular shopping mall standard so this makes Mitsui a good ‘lepak’ place for me if I have some time to while away before my flight. The free mall-wide WiFi connectivity certainly is an added advantage!

By the way, did you know that there is a flight check-in counter and check-in kiosk here at Mitsui for all airlines at both airports? Plus the free shuttle bus service to KLIA and KLIA2 make Mitsui Outlet Park a great place to hang out upon arrival or prior to boarding.

And just to cater to this group of travellers, free luggage storage is provided so that we can shop unencumbered.

Mitsui Outlet Park is similar to Johor Premium Outlets (JPO). Both are premium outlet malls where tenants carry brand name off-season products at a steep discount. Tenants at Mitsui Outlet Park promise a daily discount of at least 30% and could go up to even 90%. That would be a steal!

Even so, I went home empty handed but window shopping at Mitsui Outlet Park has just given me an idea to plan my next overseas holiday, just so that I can spend some time here!

There are a total of 120 retail outlets taken up by 100 tenants. To keep track of which tenant offers what discount or the promotions that they are running, download the MitsuiOutletPark mobile app to receive the latest information at your fingertips.

1. track owner, Mohd. Yazid bin Jamal, at the wheel

Opened in January 2016, Mozid Racing is owned by Mohd. Yazid bin Jamil. At 36 years old, this young entrepreneur has turned his hobby for speed into a business. With this 500-metre track on 1.6 acres of land, Yazid hopes to be able to nurture new talent in bike racing, beginning with young children.

As such, those who would like to practise their riding skills could do so by paying only RM20 for a full day’s use of the track. This is called track rental. Vehicles are not provided and that is a separate charge.

3. zoom along the 500m track

The core business at Mozid racing is go-karting. It is an expensive sport and maintenance is high. As an example, a secondhand go-kart is priced around RM15,000 while a new set is about RM30,000 depending on horsepower. A set of tyres worth RM1,000 could only last for a week of continuous use. Imagine that! One literally burns money on the track.

Mozid Racing has six go-karts for fun karting. Price is RM35 per 15 minutes PLUS five more minutes for free.

One does not require any driving skills to go karting, although safety briefing is provided prior to going out to the track. Whatever it is, do not panic while at the wheel. Go slow and moderately build up the speed. It is a fun sport, so it is not necessary to drive until one gets out of control.

Tanjung Hani Homestay is one of the many accommodations offered at Kampung Sijangkang in the District of Kuala Langat, Selangor. Apart from the usual “house” type of rooms, there are also chalets not unlike those of beach resorts. Can you believe it?

2. some of the accommodation options

At Tanjung Hani, guests are left on their own and they do not have to stay under the same roof as their hosts. This is what some prefer, while some like to adopt the daily living of their host family. I personally prefer to be left to my own devices.

3. one of the twin-sharing bedrooms

Due to the many rooms available at Tanjung Hani, this is a good place for family or group travel. I wondered aloud to a friend who would want to stay in a kampung, and I was told that people going for weddings or Thanksgiving dinners (kenduri) hosted nearby would look for such accommodations. Right! Why didn’t I think of that?

This recreational park serves three objectives: education, heritage preservation and recreation. But what makes this park different from all the other parks is that this one is the done at the sole initiative of fellow villagers, from workmanship to materials and most importantly, funding. Up to this point, some RM100,000 has already been spent on the development of the park.

How embarrassing for me that I have only just discovered Coleseum Café Kuala Lumpur even though this establishment has been recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records as the “Longest Operating Western Colonial-Themed Restaurant”. Recently, out of the blue, I had an invitation to participate in the Tone Race to Fiesta Alor Setar and some of the delegates were checked into Grand Alora Hotel. As you probably figured out by now, I was one of them.

I do not know Alor Setar at all but if I am not mistaken, Grand Alora is one of the better hotels in town. It has got to be when branded sales are held here, where t-shirts go for RM300 each!

Oh, by the way, I find the location of this hotel most convenient. It is just opposite Tesco Hypermarket and there are plenty of eateries and convenience stores just a couple of steps away.

Moreover, many of Alor Setar’s popular tourist destinations are just around the corner. For example, Wat Nikrodharam, State Art Gallery, Nobat Gallery, Royal Hall and Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad’s birthplace.

Well, it was too bad that I did not have the time to visit any of these attractions. I did, however, go to Alor Setar Tower and managed to shop at Aman Central, said to be the largest shopping mall in the northern region of Peninsular Malaysia.

It surprised me that prices for clothes and food here are cheaper compared to Ipoh. So, here are two good reasons to go again just to shop and eat!

Now that I have had a preview of Alor Setar, I wish to return for more experiences. I wouldn’t mind putting up at Grand Alora Hotel again for a clean, comfortable and safe stay. For more details, do check out the Grand Alora Hotel website I have included at the end of this post.

Oh! I almost forgot – the fountain just outside the hotel is a Pokémon GO PokéStop. Wooeeee!

This place looks good. How much is their rate per night? Do they accommodate long stay, say 2 weeks?

    Hi Blair,

The lowest rate is about RM200 per night. As far as I am aware, they do not have a long-stay package, so the rate will be multiplied by 14 nights.
