Alor Setar Tower (Menara Alor Setar), Kedah

Just like the attraction of PETRONAS Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur, a trip to Alor Setar is incomplete without visiting the Alor Setar Tower (Menara Alor Setar). Similar to KL Tower, it is also a telecommunications tower. In fact, it is the second tallest such tower in Malaysia and the 19th in the world.

Like any other tourist to Alor Setar, I made my way up the tower for a bird’s eye view of the city from atop the tower at 543 feet (165.5 metres). How much do you have to pay? Check this out:

Alor Setar Tower, located in the heart of the city, was opened on 14th August, 1997 by the then Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, who hails from Alor Setar himself. The tower is now a symbol of Kedah state.

With the theme “For Our Culture, Nature and Future”, Karnival Citrarasa Homestay Malaysia 2016 was launched on 5th November, 2016, with much fanfare by guest-of-honour, Deputy Minister of Tourism and Culture Y.B. Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin.

The homestay carnival, which was hosted for three days from 4th to 6th November, at Jalan Kota, Bandar Hilir in Melaka, for the first time brings the product of homestays to the people.

Locals and foreign tourists were able to see for themselves what a “homestay” is, and why it is an alternative to get to know Malaysia and her people better, rather than just sticking to the tried and tested tourist attractions.

Although registered with the Ministry of Tourism and Culture Malaysia are 193 homestays from 341 villages all over the country, only about 180 of these homestays exhibited their products at the carnival.

Besides promoting their various homestay packages and interesting activities that one could indulge in while staying in the village, they also showcased their cultural dances and songs through performances, as well as traditional delicacies via cooking demonstrations.

During the carnival, other side events included seminars for product owners, games, quizzes as well as MaTiC FM radio deejay search and mini concerts.

The homestay programme is community-based tourism that is growing in importance for the economy of the country. From January to October 2016, homestays have generated a revenue of RM17.05 million, an increase by 9.5% from RM15.57 million over the same period last year.

Speaking from personal experience, I would say that homestays are an acquired taste. I have visited many homestays around the country. While I do enjoy the setting and they make wonderful photography backdrops, I am too much of a city girl to willingly forgo the conveniences of modern amenities, which are not always available in a village.

Nevertheless, I would suggest to gain a homestay experience at least once. It doesn’t have to be at a village in a far-flung state. It could be at your own backyard, because homestay programmes are offered by all thirteen Malaysian states, and also the Federal Territory of Labuan.

A Visit to Kampung Alai Homestay in Melaka

Kampung Alai is a traditional Malay village located about 8 kilometres south of Melaka town centre. ‘Alai’ is the name of a tree, which was how the village got its name. This village of modest size boasts a population of approximately two thousand, in 500 houses. Some of these houses are enrolled in the Kampung Alai Homestay Programme.

Ipoh Free Shuttle Bus: City Centre – Lost World of Tambun

$

Since starting this blog, I have lost count of the number of times I have been asked about the best way to go to the Lost World of Tambun by public transport, and the cheapest way to go there.

1. Sunway City Ipoh free shuttle bus service

1. Sunway City Ipoh free shuttle bus service

While Sunway Lost World of Tambun has been providing free van shuttle service to the theme park from selected hotels in Ipoh for the past two years, we all realise that not all visitors to the theme park stay at one of the eight partner hotels.

2. the shuttle bus has arrived at Syeun Hotel

2. the shuttle bus has arrived at Syeun Hotel

And so, Sunway Group, as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, has recently launched a free shuttle bus service for everyone – it does not matter if the passenger intends to stop at Lost World of Tambun. This free shuttle bus service operates from 10am to 10pm daily, except for Tuesday, unless it is a Malaysian school holiday or public holiday.

3. (L-R) staff of Lost World of Tambun, Gerald Sim and Eugene Wong alongside Ms. Maggie Ong (Executive Director of Syeun Hotel) and Mr. Calvin Ho (Senior General Manager of Sunway Theme Parks)

3. (L-R) staff of Lost World of Tambun, Gerald Sim and Eugene Wong alongside Ms. Maggie Ong (Executive Director of Syeun Hotel) and Mr. Calvin Ho (Senior General Manager of Sunway Theme Parks)

Departing from Lost World of Tambun (at 10am, 4.30pm, 6.30pm & 10pm), its first stop is Fair Park Hotel, followed by Tower Regency Hotel, Syeun Hotel, Excelsior Hotel, French Hotel, Ipoh Downtown Hotel, Ibis Hotel and Impiana Hotel, before making its way back to the Lost World of Tambun. This loop takes approximately 1.5 hours on normal traffic condition.

4. route (copyright: Google)

4. route (copyright: Google)

This free shuttle service is available on first-come, first-served basis for the public – obviously, hotel guests with valid theme park tickets have priority. Nonetheless, this bus is large enough for twenty passengers – ten seated and ten standing. Plus, there is sufficient space for luggage as well. Depending on the demand for this service, the current van shuttle service is still available, so there is no worry about being stranded.

5. at Hotel Excelsior Ipoh

5. at Hotel Excelsior Ipoh

As I have mentioned earlier, one need not be a visitor to the Lost World of Tambun to utilise this service. For example, if you live in Simee and you would like to go to Ipoh Parade, the nearest stop for you to wait for this free shuttle bus is Fair Park Hotel. Hop on it and disembark at Syeun Hotel. Ipoh Parade is just opposite Syeun.

But, where is the bus now?? You can track the location of the bus conveniently from your smart phone via the mobile app “Sunway Lost World Shuttle Bus” available for both Android and iOS, downloadable from Google Play Store and Apple App Store respectively, for free!

Laman Tiga Budaya – The Point Where Three States Meet

It is always said that “it’s not about the destination but the journey”. However, going to the small town of Asahan in Melaka’s District of Jasin, it is totally about the destination.

1. Laman Tiga Budaya

1. Laman Tiga Budaya

In one particular spot in the town of Asahan (landmark: Asahan Water Theme Park) is the point where three states meet. The states are Melaka, Negeri Sembilan and Johor.

2. Syed Ali (L) & Pojie (R) take the opportunity to handle snakes

2. Syed Ali (L) & Pojie (R) take the opportunity to handle snakes

I have always been fascinated by border points, like the one of Pengkalan Hulu (Perak, Malaysia) / Betong (Thailand). Or the Selangor / Pahang border of Genting Highlands and the point where Fraser’s Hill straddles both states of Selangor and Pahang.

3. the point where three states meet: Melaka, Negeri Sembilan & Johor

3. the point where three states meet: Melaka, Negeri Sembilan & Johor

Another unique point worth mentioning would be Perak’s Kerian District, which is located in the north, bordering Seberang Perai Selatan District (Penang) and Bandar Baharu District (Kedah).

But what makes Laman Tiga Budaya so fascinating, at least for me, is that the exact meeting point of the three states is marked. If anyone tells you that it is impossible to be in three Malaysian states at the same time, you can prove them wrong here, at the foot of Gunung Ledang.

5. this is how one can be in three Malaysian states at the same time

I am glad to have discovered this point of three states when we were in the area to support the “Save Our Waterfall” campaign.

Today’s post is useful for me as it is for you because I am using this blog like my personal web clipper for future reference. You see, one of my resolutions for 2017 is to go on these walks, all four trails of them, this year.

Kuala Lumpur City Gallery (meet up point for Trail 1)

Kuala Lumpur City Gallery (meet up point for Trail 1)

It really doesn’t sound all that difficult. The problem is that I live in Ipoh. I do go to Kuala Lumpur now and then but my free time there is rather fleeting, hence, it will take a bit of a juggle to fit in a guided tour of the city, let alone four. But as the saying goes, where there’s a will there’s a way!

What’s In My Travel Backpack?

$
0
0

I recently saw my friend, Uncle Zuan, list out the items in his travel backpack, so I decided to check my own to see what I actually carry. Why is my travel backpack so dang heavy?

1. all the things in my travel backpack

1. all the things in my travel backpack

For the purpose of this post, I intentionally only took photos after I have arrived at my hotel room, to ensure that these are the things that I really do have in my bag, after I left my Ipoh home on a trip. So, what do I have?

1) ASUS Transformer
2) money belt
3) sunglasses
4) umbrella
5) windbreaker
6) tissue paper, wet tissue, hand sanitiser
7) notebook (accidentally hidden in photo) and pens
8) Panadol and Strepsils
9) bottled water
10) business cards
11) pendrives, USB on-the-go, memory cards and reader
12) earphones
13) pepper spray
14) Teddy Bear keychain (or some other small toy)

2. my ASUS Transformer

2. my ASUS Transformer

Strangely, when I have these items listed out, they don’t seem that heavy. The weightiest item is obviously my ASUS Transformer but I have the advantage of leaving the keyboard behind should I find that I do not have enough time to do serious work on my laptop when I am on the move.

3. pendrives, USB on-the-go, memory cards and its reader

3. pendrives, USB on-the-go, memory cards and its reader

Of course, water is heavy too. But then again, it is not something that I can live without. I don’t want to fall ill! Other items are really very light, their weight negligible, as you can see: pendrives, tissue, hand sanitiser, memory card, business cards and sunglasses.

4. windbreaker from an Ipoh-based online outdoor store, http://www.pttoutdoor.com

4. windbreaker from an Ipoh-based online outdoor store, http://www.pttoutdoor.com

The fluorescent pouch looks bulky but it isn’t really. It’s my windbreaker, which I carry with me all the time, to not only protect me from the wind or drizzle, but basically from the elements. I got it from an Ipoh-based online outdoor store, PTTOutdoor.com.

Colours available are cool blue, jet black, metal grey, orange, sky blue, and lime green, as what I am wearing here. To purchase yours, use my special code Emily2u for a 15% discount! This code is applicable on all products storewide!

5. my short and light umbrella from H&M

5. my short and light umbrella from H&M

I still do carry an umbrella, depending on the kind of trip I go on, with whom and the destination that I would be covering. Although I could make do with just the windbreaker, the umbrella is good to be shared with my travel companion should it rain or if the weather proves to be exceptionally hot. I bought this really small umbrella from H&M for almost RM40. It’s very light, so into the bag it goes.

6. money belt

6. money belt

The money belt is really useful for me, especially when I travel solo. I just clip it around my waist should I need to leave my backpack somewhere for whatever reason. In the belt are cash, personal documents and everything that’s important. Easy, right? Oh, yes, this is where the passport goes into should I travel overseas.

7. dry food

7. dry food

And then there is food. I usually have biscuits in my bag because I could hardly tell when my next meal would be. These biscuits saved the day during my participation in the Swiss-Garden Damai Laut Food & Fun Hunt, where my team had to forgo lunch for two days to ensure that we completed all our tasks within the stipulated time.

As you can see, these are essentials for me. What about you? What do you have in your travel backpack?
