If you live in Singapore, you’re most likely familiar with the tedious lifestyle of living in a big city. There are just so many times that you can see the same places, visit the same malls, and eat at the same restaurants before you get bored of them all.

Johor coastline

Fortunately, just across the Johor-Singapore Causeway lies the sunny Malaysian state of Johor, a tropical paradise where many busy Singaporeans take refuge in its crystal clear water beaches. So, by just taking a bus from Singapore to Johor, you are merely a stone’s throw away from some of the most amazing beach resorts.

Here are 5 Johor resorts you can’t miss during your next vacation.

Lotus Desaru Beach Resort
Lotus Desaru is a paradisaical spot located on the eastern seashore of Johor and just 2 hours by road from Singapore. Sandwiched between the beach and the unspoiled nature of the Malaysian jungle, the resort includes 700 spacious suites that are fully equipped with a large wardrobe, bathroom, its own kitchen, and everything else you need to feel at home.

The resort’s large swimming pool is a great place to relax and it also has its own water park where kids can play. For holiday-makers looking for a bigger pool, Lotus Desaru is located right next to the beach and it offers many fun activities for people of all ages, including boat rides, Jet Skiing, and parasailing. Hiking expeditions are also available for guests wanting to see the exotic jungle while those who stay in can be pampered at the resort’s comfortable spa facilities.

Tad Marine Resort
Located on the exotic island of Pulau Tinggi, Tad Marine is a sunny beach resort with the charm of an untouched paradise. Tad Marine is an ideal destination for vacationers looking for more secluded accommodations since its stylish chalets provide a comfortable place to rest and relax in private before resuming their adventure.

In addition to its comfortable chalets, the resort also offers many fun activities for guests. Whether it’s exploring the nearby reefs via snorkelling or scuba diving tours, hiking across the island or exploring nearby islands, there’s plenty of adventure to be had. Lastly, no stay at this resort is complete without visiting their spa for a full rejuvenating treatment of mind, body and soul.

Rawa Island Resort
Located on the tropical island of the same name, Rawa Island is an idyllic resort where busy city-dwellers can find the peace and quiet they deserve. Whether it’s renting a chalet or bungalow along the main beach or a hillside villa with a view of the whole island, you can choose your accommodations based on your preferences and budget. Besides its beautiful views, the resort also offers many water activities including diving near the intact house reef that surrounds the island.

For vacationers who wish to enjoy a more tranquil stay, the resort’s spa is the perfect place to get everything from foot massages to reflexology, or simply bathing in the Jacuzzi. Just don’t forget to stop by their excellent restaurant between your adventures to taste some of the most delicious seafood you’ve ever had.

Aseania Resort Pulau Besar
With only 47 rooms, Aseania Resort is one of the most exclusive vacationing destinations in Johor. Aseania Resort is located on the island of Pulau Besar and is well-known for its year-round nature expeditions to the reefs surrounding the island and its cozy rooms decorated in Malay kampung style. Guests can choose their rooms either near the beach or on the hills; both types are furnished with everything you may need, including air-conditioning, comfortable bathrooms, mini refrigerator and satellite TV.

In addition to offering many fun water activities, the resort also has its own swimming pool where you can relax in quiet waters while friendly bartenders serve you your favourite drinks and cocktails. Foodies certainly love the resort’s Kayu Manis Restaurant, where exotic Balinese decoration complements delicious food.

Sea Gypsy Village Resort & Dive Base
Located in Sibu Island and bathed by the crystalline waters of the South China Sea, Sea Gypsy is a secluded resort with a friendly, community-like vibe of a traditional holiday resort. For tourists looking for an affordable escapade from the big city, Sea Gypsy offers comfortable beach cabins and a chilled environment far from the busy beaches of mainland Johor.

The cabins are rustic but extremely clean, and located so near the beach that you go to bed hearing the calming sounds of the sea. For those with kids, there are also many activities available, including a children’s club where the little ones can have fun while the grown-ups explore the island.

The resort offers many exciting activities, such as kayaking, sailing, snorkelling and hiking. Between your adventures, do stop by the restaurant to taste the delectable buffet spread or have a relaxing drink among friends.

Genting Highlands – More Than Just Theme Parks

$

For most people, when Genting Highlands is mentioned, the first thing that would pop in their head is the thrill-filled, exciting rides that make up Genting’s popular theme park. Nestled high on a mountain peak also makes Genting Highlands one of the best places to escape from the scorching sun to the salubrious mountain air.

Genting Skyway

Genting Skyway

Even though the outdoor theme park is currently under construction for a bigger, better and more extravagant first ever 20th Century Fox World Genting Malaysia theme park that is set to open this year, don’t let this stop you from getting yourself to the Highlands. There are many other things to do up on that mountain. Here are just a number of them:

Casino de Genting

Casino de Genting

Casino de Genting

Genting Highlands raison d’être, the Casino de Genting, may not come anywhere near Las Vegas’s prime light where sparkling attire, glittering neon lights and scantily-clad showgirls abound, but for all it is worth, this is Malaysia’s only legal land-based casino. Men in batik shirts and women in pretty dresses crowd the tables and punters line the slot machines waiting for Lady Luck to bless them with a big payout. There is nothing but pure fun here (and monetary loss for some).

Flying Fox
If you fancy being strapped safely into a harness and helmet and then jumping off a ramp into a dipterocarp forest, this would surely tickle your adrenaline spirit. This airborne adventure sends you down 100 metres off the side of the hill. Not only do you get to enjoy this jump down, imagine the view of the whole Genting right before your eyes. The ultimate way to bond with friends and family is going for this perfect quick-thrill ride together.

Genting Skyway Cable Car

Genting SkyWay

Genting SkyWay

The Skyway Cable Car is the fastest and easiest way to get to the peak of Genting Highlands. This relaxing and scenic ride affords you breathtaking views of the surrounding hills; the gondola-style cab glides along at leisurely pace, making it an ideal photo-taking opportunity.

Snow World

Snow World

Snow World

Experience winter wonderland unlike any other in Malaysia as soon as you step into the snow-white landscape of Snow World. Featuring the Cresta Run snow slide, this attraction is a novel experience due to Malaysia’s hot and humid weather. It’s a great place to watch kids play while adults take in the sights.

Genting Bowl

Genting Bowl - Glow in the Dark Bowling

Genting Bowl – Glow in the Dark Bowling

First World Plaza has a bowling alley – Genting Bowl. One of the highlights at Genting Bowl is glow-in-the-dark bowling. For those of you who feel like the indoor theme park has nothing to offer you, do make sure you take some time off your shopping trip and drop by this bowling alley and experience a one-of-a-kind bowling session with family or friends!

Now that the entertainment aspect is conveyed, let’s talk about accommodation in Genting. Hotels on the Highlands are stylish. Spacious guestrooms offer breathtaking mountain views.

Here are a couple of our favourites.

First World Hotel – Resorts World Genting

First World Hotel

First World Hotel

This hotel is officially the world’s largest hotel as it adjoins the First World Plaza which boasts 500,000 square feet of indoor theme park, a shopping centre and food haven. Right at the main entrance, a lush, tropical rainforest greets guests. All the rooms are modern, comfortable and practical.

Awana Hotel – Resorts World Genting

Awana Hotel

Awana Hotel

Indulge in five-star luxury while enjoying the breathtaking view of a majestic mountain range. Make full use of their 18-hole golf course, heated swimming pool and other sports facilities. At Awana, the only main rival for comfort is their beautiful, stunning view.

One thing about Genting is you need to plan your holidays well as the crowd can be overwhelming and rooms totally sold out, especially during school holidays. It is always best to check with Traveloka on room availability, as well as for the best deals in town.

1. Hotel Penaga in George Town, Penang

Located at the corner lot of Jalan Hutton and Lebuh Clarke in George Town, Penang, Hotel Penaga’s unique art deco terraces surely catch the eye of passersby.

2. lobby & reception counter

2. lobby & reception counter

Constructed in the early 1920s, this building was originally a three-row, cluster of fifteen double-storey block with terraced houses and shops.

Many locals would remember this property as being left vacant for many years and left in disrepair, until it was acquired by the husband-and-wife couple of Hijjas Kasturi & Angela in 2008.

3. decorated corridor

3. decorated corridor

Long story short, the block of buildings were restored and converted into a forty-five room heritage boutique hotel, using traditional architectural methods and original furniture.

The timber and lumber used at Penaga were recovered and repurposed from demolished colonial buildings within the island.

4. garden in the city

4. garden in the city

Mr. Kasturi, an architect and Angela, an environmentalist, have jointly put their heart and soul into the hotel; let’s not forget the investment of time and money.

About five years ago, Hotel Penaga opened its doors to their first guests.

5. cosy corner outside of two suites

5. cosy corner outside of two suites

If you have wondered what “Penaga” means, the hotel is named after Tanjung Penaga, or the Cape of Penaga, a species of trees that grew here, and was used as a name for the first settlement in Penang where George Town sits.

6. Penaga Spa

6. Penaga Spa

As soon as I set foot past the door of Hotel Penaga, I was transported back in time to the era of my great-grandparents.

Away from the hustle and bustle that is George Town, Hotel Penaga offers a cosy retreat to guests, until they are once again ready to explore the cultural heritage city again, as it is strategically situated within UNESCO World Heritage Site in the heart of George Town.

7. Penaga Spa

7. Penaga Spa

During my stay at Hotel Penaga, I had the opportunity to check out some of the rooms. The hotel offers four categories of accommodation: Hutton Deluxe, Clarke Terraces, Transfer Suites and Penaga Suites, to cater to the different needs of guests.

8. Hutton Suite, where the stairs lead to the attic-like bedroom

8. Hutton Suite, where the stairs lead to the attic-like bedroom

Each each room or suite boasts a unique style and I was hard pressed to look for one that was furnished the same.

Yes, guests would never go bored even if they put up at Hotel Penaga multiple times as every room or unit is laid out with its own distinctive theme.

9. Hutton Suite

9. Hutton Suite

Hutton Deluxe
Finely appointed, Hutton Deluxe, although the lowest category of rooms of Penaga, are reconstructed with Chinese antique furniture, restored timber flooring and individual art pieces.

Each unit is equipped with a hot tub, and some have balconies. The unit that I was assigned to had a staircase that led up to an attic-like open concept bedroom.

10. Hutton Deluxe

10. Hutton Deluxe

Clarke Terraces
Named after the street that it fronts, these are terrace houses, which make a perfect fit for families or those travelling as a group.

Not only are Clarke Terraces spacious, they provide privacy as well. Again, the units have been furnished with beautiful reconstructed antique furniture.

11. Clarke Terraces

11. Clarke Terraces

Transfer Suites
With only eight Transfer Suites, these are of course very popular among larger family groups, although they may not be suitable for the elderly as they are only accessible by stairs.

Some are with balcony and some without, so do specify what you require when you make a reservation.

12. Transfer Suite - the top two and bottom two photos are from different bedrooms

13. Transfer Suite

13. Transfer Suite

Penaga Suites
These are corner units with a larger floor space of 60sq. m. The two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a living room are great for large family groups, and the good news is that no climbing is necessary.

Looking through my photos, you will see that Hotel Penaga gives off a homely feel. Indeed, I felt very at ease during my stay and had considered extending my holiday, if only I did not have commitments in Ipoh!

14. fine dining at The Cinnamon

Besides accommodation, other in-house facilities include a restaurant (The Cinnamon), lounge (The Tanglung Bar), business centre, spa (Penaga Spa) and lap pool.

Oh, another plus point of Hotel Penaga would be that it was the first heritage restoration project in the country to be awarded a Gold Rating by the Green Building Index.

What is the Green Building Index?

The Green Building Index (GBI) is Malaysia’s industry recognised green rating tool for buildings to promote sustainability in the built environment and raise awareness among developers, architects, engineers, planners, designers, contractors and the public about environmental issues and our responsibility to the future generations.

The GBI rating tool provides an opportunity for developers and building owners to design and construct green, sustainable buildings that can provide energy savings, water savings, a healthier indoor environment, better connectivity to public transport and the adoption of recycling and greenery for their projects and reduce our impact on the environment.

1. Pinang Peranakan Mansion

One of the two historic cities of the Straits of Malacca, George Town jointly received the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site status in 2008 partly because of its rich living multi-cultural heritage and tradition. Therefore, a visit to Penang would be incomplete if one does not explore the culture of the Peranakans, among other local communities.

In Penang, one of the best places to learn about the Peranakan way of life is by making a visit to the Pinang Peranakan Mansion. It has been established as the home of a wealthy Baba and depicts his opulent lifestyle of decades ago. The original home was built in 1894 by Kapitan Cina Chung Keng Kwee and was known as “Hai Kee Chan” or “Sea Remembrance Store”. It once served as Kapitan Chung’s residence and office.

Although this Toy & Fantasy Museum in Penang is entered in the Malaysia Book of Records for “World’s Largest Toy Museum” and “World’s Costliest Toy Museum”, it is not extensively promoted as it should be. Thus, many people are unaware of its existence.

During my 5-day Penang holiday last month where I stayed at two heritage boutique hotels (Kimberley & Penaga), I couldn’t help but wonder if Ipoh has a similar type of hotel to offer – a heritage boutique hotel with character.

2. Premium Double Room

As someone who is frequently on the road, I have put up at many different types of accommodations, from the most basic of homestays to luxurious five-star resorts.

3. Premium Double Room

To me, the factors that make one trip more memorable than the other are: the people I meet, the places I visit, the food I eat, the things I get to indulge in, and of course, the hotels that I stay in.

With one trip blending into another, it is not easy to remember everything, unless it is outstanding. As for the recent Penang trip, the hotels stood out for me.

In Ipoh, we have something similar in Ban Loon Hotel. Just opened for business 1.5 months ago, this is a 102-year-old (1915) building that has seen four going on five generations of the Loh Family.

In 2015, the family decided to convert the building, in the heart of Ipoh Old Town, into a boutique hotel, to cater to the market demand for more accommodations in that area of Ipoh.

Restoration of the building took about two years, with investment of time, money and energy, plus having to make many painful decisions on how best to preserve the building but at the same time fulfil all building fire safety requirements as stipulated by the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia.

Top 7 Resorts in Perak, Malaysia

$

0

With Lonely Planet ranking Perak at No. 9 on their list of Best in Travel 2017: Top Regions, I have personally seen an influx of tourists, particularly in Ipoh Old Town area on weekends. This is the place that I usually avoid as a local!

Obviously, Perak is more than just Ipoh, and this new list has helped expand the radius of the spotlight, after the travel guide book publisher ranked Ipoh as 6th Hottest Asian Destination to Visit in 2016.

If you are planning a trip to Ipoh and Perak, and I assume that you already have a good idea where this northern state of Perak and its capital city (Ipoh) are, perhaps my list can help you make a more informed decision on a relaxing vacation.

This list is a compilation of resorts in Perak, including Ipoh, which I have personally experienced over the past few years. Let’s just say, these accommodations are personal recommendations and they are in no way conclusive and is in random order.

Let’s begin……….

#1 Swiss-Garden Beach Resort Damai Laut
Secluded, idyllic, scenic. Just three adjectives are enough to describe this resort in Lumut. It is quite a winding drive from the main road but it is well worth it. The resort has a private jetty to ferry guests to Pangkor Island. It saves time and is very convenient.

aerial view of the pool and sea

aerial view of the pool and sea

A beachfront resort, honestly speaking, a beach located on this West Coast can’t possibly match that of the East Coast but that doesn’t mean we are unable to enjoy what we have.

There are plenty of activities to keep everyone in the family happy and occupied, from sea sports to golf. Swiss-Garden Beach Resort Damai Laut is truly a holiday “destination”. If you don’t want to do anything but just relax during your stay, that is perfectly all right as well.

#2 Marina Island Pangkor Resort & Hotel
Located in Teluk Muroh, Lumut, this resort is great for families or large groups because of its spacious suites. If you talk about luxury, this is not the type, and in the true sense, it doesn’t give you a “resort feel” at all.

Marina Island Pangkor Resort & Hotel

swimming pool of Marina Island Pangkor Resort & Hotel fronts the lake

However, in addition to its generous floor space, the suites are clean, comfortable and quiet. And these are just some of the reasons that I have stayed here three times over the past five years. For someone like me who hardly returns to the same resort for the second time, it really tells a lot.

Marina Island Pangkor Resort & Hotel is just within walking distance from the jetty to Pangkor Island. Yup, that’s time saved due to its convenience.

During my previous stays, I liked to walk along the marina and admire the yachts; unfortunately, no owner invited me up for an “inspection”. Not yet.

#3 Belum Rainforest Resort
Despite its name, Belum Rainforest Resort is actually located in Pulau Banding and not Royal Belum.

However, it serves as a gateway to Royal Belum as it is just a 30 to 45-minute speed boat ride away, across Temenggor Lake. The resort is one of Malaysia’s premier ecotourism holiday destinations, so guests can enjoy the natural environment to its fullest.

Belum Rainforest Resort

Belum Rainforest Resort

Personally, I’d be extremely contented just staying here even if I do not get to go to Royal Belum. That is another attraction altogether. But of course, if you haven’t been to Royal Belum before, you should. It can easily be arranged.

#4 The Haven Resort Hotel Ipoh All Suites
I personally enjoy The Haven very much as it is an opportunity to get close to nature, without being too far away from the city. I actually live just 20 minutes away, so it is a great change of environment for me, without driving a long distance.

The Haven Resort Hotel Ipoh All Suites

The Haven Resort Hotel Ipoh All Suites

I pop by frequently to dine, rest and relax or luxuriate in its seahorse-shaped swimming pool (and I can’t even swim). Somehow, the tranquility helps refresh my mind and I can approach my mountain of work with new vigour.

By the way, The Haven also offers all suites, and they have suites for two (honeymoon couple?) to three-bedroom suites that are ideal for families or holidaymakers travelling in a group.

#5 Banjaran Hotsprings Retreat
Not really a resort, more of a retreat but it gets into my list because I say so.

This property is a higher-end property but still affordable to a good number of tourists. The two types of villas available are: Garden and Water. How about going for one type first and the other on the next visit? Yup, that sounds like a good plan.

Banjaran retreat

The Banjaran Hotsprings Retreat

Set against limestone hills of Tambun, Banjaran is just a stone’s throw away from The Haven. Banjaran’s many geothermal hotsprings within the property promotes wellness not only to the mind but also the body. That’s why it is known as a luxury wellness and spa ‘retreat’.

Security is understandably stringent here. Nevertheless, the spa is open to the public, although prior reservation is required.

#6 Bukit Merah Laketown Resort
Just an hour’s drive to the north of Ipoh, Bukit Merah Laketown Resort boasts two parks: Ecopark and Waterpark, which is jointly the largest water theme park in Northern Peninsular Malaysia, thanks to its 7,000-acre freshwater lake.

As you can imagine, a stay here would spell fun, fun and more fun, especially for children. It is more so when its Laketown Adventure Park & Nature Education Centre opens in the middle of 2017.

Bukit Merah Laketown Resort

Water Chalets @ Bukit Merah Laketown Resort

The resort is also the gateway to Orang Utan Island (OUI), or now known by its new name, Bukit Merah Orang Utan Island Foundation. A 15-minute boat ride takes visitors to the Orang Utan conservation centre, which provides infant care for baby Orang Utan. It also runs educational and research programmes.

#7 Sentosa Villa
This hideaway villa in Taiping exudes a “resort feel” through chalet-type villas. Besides one bungalow, conventional hotel rooms from categories of Standard to Classic and Junior Suites are also offered. This villa is very much sought-after, especially during school holidays.

Sentosa Villa Taiping

Sentosa Villa, Taiping

Sentosa Villa is like a mini resort. It is located between two famed Taiping attractions: Maxwell Hill and Taiping Lake Gardens. Also nearby are some of the town’s top tourist destinations such as Burmese Pool, Taiping Zoo, Taiping War Cemetery and Taiping Zoo.

Today’s post is as useful to you as it is to myself for future reference. Here are three free guided walks organised by Sahabat Muzium Melaka (Friends of Melaka Museums).

Kampung Morten, Melaka

Kampung Morten, Melaka

The guided walks by licensed tourist guides are in Kampung Portugis, Kampung Morten and Kampung Chetti. Their focus is on culture and heritage of the respective areas.

schedule for Melaka Cultural Heritage Walks

I have visited Melaka numerous times and have yet to set foot on Kampung Chetti. It is high time I make my way there to participate in the free guided walk.

I enjoy guided walks because I learn a lot more, thanks to knowledgeable guides, compared to walking and exploring a certain place by myself. And if it is free of charge, it is certainly a bonus.

Similar to most heritage walks, each session can only accommodate 20 people, so prior reservation by email is required.

Wayang Kulit
Puppet shadow play (wayang kulit) is said to have originated from Java, Indonesia. In Malaysia, it is a prominent Malay theatrical art form and has been so for many generations.

1. wayang kulit characters

1. wayang kulit characters

Utilising light and shadow, a wayang kulit performance is led by a “Tuk Dalang” (shadow artist) who would deftly manoeuvre the many puppets behind a white screen called “kelir” in Malay.

2. wayang kulit screen

2. wayang kulit screen

The two-dimensional puppets are made from cowhide and usually shaped after specific characters from wayang kulit stories, usually revolving around legends of Mahabrata and Ramayana.

The Tuk Dalang strategically positions the carved puppets in front of a hanging light bulb, so that only shadows of the puppets are visible on screen, bringing the puppets to life for the audience.

Meanwhile, as the Tok Dalang plays with the movement of the puppets, he mimics the different voices of the characters, accompanied by music from an emsemble of seven or eight members, who play the gong, a pair of geduk, gedombak, serunai, canang and kesi.

Gamelan
Also originated from Java, Indonesia, “gamelan” means “to pound upon”, which aptl describes the way the musical instruments of the Gamelan in played, by pounding on the Gong Agong, Gong Sawakan, Gendang Ibu, Gendang Anak, Saran Pekin, Saran Baron I & II, Gambang and Kenong.

3. gamelan

3. gamelan

While these traditional musical instruments are commonly made from bronze, there are different variants of them that are made from iron and bamboo.

The Gamelan medley is usually performed at both formal and informal ceremonies such as weddings and circumcision rites. Nine male musicians will handle the instruments and they are accompanied by six female dancers. The Javanese Gamelan is also popular in Johor and Kuala Lumpur.

Kompang
A Kompang group consists of three musicians only but Kompang Jawa, also known as Kompang Tiga, is performed by three sets of three musicians, meaning nine people.

4. kompang

4. kompang

This is also a Javanese tradition and has been inherited by the Javanese community, who make up 70% of the population in Kuala Selangor.

5. kompang

In the early days in Java, Kompang was performed to attract people to the teachings of Islam. In Malaysia, it is still played at mosques, madrasahs and during religious festivals and ceremonies.

Kuda Kepang
Means Braided Horse in English, Kuda Kepang is a dance from Java, Indonesia that was performed to attract peoples attention to the teachings of Islam.

Believed to be founded by Wali Songo (Nine Saints) in the 15th century, the real horses used in the dance were later replaced with a horse-shaped cutout made from bamboo or animal skin.

In Malaysia, Kuda Kepang remains a popular performance for people of Javanese descent. A Kuda Kepang performance requires nine dancers, five musicians, two shamans and at least nine assistants.

Many of the dancers end up being in trance, hence this may not be suitable for young children. Also, do take note that red colour is forbidden in the area, so people are advised not to wear read when they attend a Kuda Kepang performance.

Lion Dance
Originally from China, the lion dance traditional art has improvised so much since being brought to Malaysia that this art form is now more of a sport which welcomes the participation of anyone irrespective of race, religion or colour.

12. lion dance performers under Master Siow Ho Phiew's tutelage

In fact, Malaysia has improved on the entire ritual by leaps and bounds in terms of the lion head and costume, footwork and music, that many international communities that have adopted the lion dance are actually following Malaysia’s footsteps, rather than the traditional art form.

13. Master Siow's student and grand-students

13. Master Siow’s student and grand-students

Although it would be to the benefit of the lion dancer if he was trained in kung fu (or wushu / martial art), it is not a necessity. There are two styles of lion dancing; northern and southern. Although both are performed, the southern style seems to be more popular.

1. Silvered leaf monkeys (Silvery lutung)

During my visit to Kuala Selangor in January, I was supposed to visit Bukit Malawati but a change in schedule meant that I had to give it a miss. I finally had the chance to visit this historical hill last week.

2. silvered leaf monkey (Silvery lutung) chilling atop a tram

2. silvered leaf monkey (Silvery lutung) chilling atop a tram

I’ve heard a lot about Bukit Malawati, especially the silvered leaf monkeys and their orange babies that call this hill home, but never had delved into the historical facts or explored Malawati until this trip. Bukit Malawati in Kuala Selangor is about an hour’s drive from Kuala Lumpur.

3. monkey colony

3. monkey colony

The silvered leaf monkeys live in harmony with longtail macaques. Do take note that the macaques can be rather fierce, unlike the silvered leaf monkeys. Feeding is allowed and there are even vendors around who sell fruits and vegetables to visitors who wish to do so.

4. trams that are used to ferry visitors up Bukit Malawati

4. trams that are used to ferry visitors up Bukit Malawati

By the way, while cars are allowed up the hill on weekdays, only trams are used to ferry visitors on weekends, due to insufficient parking bays. Two trams are available, with each capable of accommodating 44 to 50 pax. The fare is RM5.30 per adult and RM3.20 per child (3 – 12 years of age). Those who wish to exercise may walk up the hill, which takes about 30 minutes.

5. Kuala Selangor Lighthouse, built in 1907

5. Kuala Selangor Lighthouse, built in 1907

Atop the hill sits the Kuala Selangor Lighthouse, also known as Altingsburg Lighthouse. Built in 1907, this lighthouse is so well maintained that it is still in use today, to guide ships that sail along the Straits of Malacca. Hence, the lighthouse is lighted up from 7pm to 6am daily. We were allowed to climb up the lighthouse but only to the first level. I was informed that on “Open Day”, visitors are allowed to climb the lighthouse till the top.

6. En Mahadi, Museum Assistant

Adjacent to the lighthouse is the Historical Museum of Kuala Selangor District. If you are a history buff, this is the place for you. Spend time to read up on the history of Kuala Selangor and Bukit Malawati. Information boards are in Bahasa Malaysia and English.

Sky Mirror @ Sasaran: What You Should Know

1. under the hat effect

1. under the hat effect

Barely two months ago, I felt disappointed that I wasn’t able to personally experience Sky Mirror. I was already in that vicinity but it was the inappropriate time of the day and the boat could not head to Sasaran Beach.

2. failed hexagon

2. failed hexagon

Thankfully, I was presented with a second opportunity a couple of weeks ago, and I really had a great time taking nice mirror-effect photographs.

3. group shot

3. group shot

If you do not know yet, Sky Mirror is Malaysia’s very own version of Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia’s salt flat. At Sasaran though, the difference is that there is no evidence of salt lumps, just a vast expanse of sand and sea, almost like a beach, hence the place is known as Sasaran Beach.

4. couple shot

4. couple shot

It is not a real beach in the technical sense. During high tide, the sand disappears and it is just like the sea once again. This phenomenon happens about twenty days in a month, at different times of the day.

5. sea creature

5. sea creature

For the full schedule and to check out the new product of Sasaran at Sunset, send a private message to the only licensed tour operator of Sky Mirror at their official Facebook Page: 天空之镜 Sky Mirror Tour & Travel Sdn Bhd

6. Sasaran Beach

6. Sasaran Beach

Many people have enquired about Sasaran’s location. The official name is Kuala Selangor, about an hour’s drive from Kuala Lumpur. The road trip is followed by a speedboat ride of another 30 minutes (at 20 – 30 knots) from Sungai Buloh Jetty in Jeram.

7. spot the dolphin

7. spot the dolphin

The company, which owns four speedboats, only runs one trip a day, so seats are limited and are on first come, first served basis. The entire tour takes about four hours, with approximately 1.5 hours spent on the beach.

8. birds' nests

8. birds’ nests

The rest of the time will be spent cruising the river, and if you are lucky, you will be able to spot dolphins.

9. birds perch on a lush tree

9. birds perch on a lush tree

Based on my personal experience, I am glad to share seven tips with you before you make your trip to Sasaran Beach:

1) You will get wet and dirty – wear slippers as you will be asked to walk barefoot on the beach
2) Wear colourful clothing – although you will be advised to wear shorts and long sleeves, you don’t really have to. Just be prepared to get your clothes muddy and wet + suffer a little sunburn
3) Bring lots of props, colourful props – umbrellas, fans, balloons, caps, etc.
4) Use a waterproof bag – there is no dry place for your belongings
5) Your guide can help you to shoot photos but he will probably ask you to face the sun – you won’t be able to open your eyes, so what good are those photos? Also, make sure that your photographer’s shadow does not enter the photo and overlaps your own mirror effect
6) Check out the photos of other visitors from the official Facebook page of 天空之镜 Sky Mirror Tour & Travel Sdn Bhd to have an idea on how you want your photos to be
7) Make absolutely sure there is no one to photo bomb you – the “beach” is as wide as fifty football fields, so there’s plenty of space if you walk further away from shore

10. a bird that looks like a chick

10. a bird that looks like a chick

I was none the wiser on my excursion, hence it calls for a return trip. Maybe I will take the sunset tour, which only happens ten days in a year, and it is only about 30 minutes each time! That is going to be challenging!

Price for Sky Mirror Tour:
RM80 adult with MyKad / RM100 Standard
RM60 child with MyKid / RM80 Standard (3-12 years)
