Travel Light, Eat Cheap

$

People who have travelled together with me know that I bring my house along. They often ask me what’s in my hand-carry. Not only is it bulky, it’s as heavy as a cow. I don’t really know what I bring along, I just know that I do need to have them all on hand.

Lately, with AirAsia’s strict enforcement of 7kg combined weight limit on carry-on luggage, I really need to reevaluate what I take on a trip. Yes, I have a habit of over-packing and that has to change.

1. just what I need to travel light

1. just what I need to travel light

Receiving two bags from Lazada in my Lazada Surprise Box is a blessing that would force me to pack lighter. One is a Delsey Expert 53cm 4-Wheel Cabin Trolley Case and the other is an American Tourister Kamden Laptop Backpack.

I do have three trolley cases already but I don’t have a cabin-sized one. Again, I have quite a few backpacks but this is my first laptop bag that is this slim.

2. my ASUS Transformer fits snugly in the backpack

2. my ASUS Transformer fits snugly in the backpack

It helps that I have previously purchased handroll vacuum compression storage bags from Lazada. I’ve used them for about two months on every trip that I went on and I can attest to the fact that they indeed reduce the bulk from my clothes.

See my new A6 notebook water bottle? It will fit in nicely into the American Tourister Kamden Laptop Backpack.

Also, just when I am planning a trip to Hong Kong, imagine my dismay to read that the Economist Intelligence Unit’s annual Worldwide Cost of Living Survey has found Hong Kong to be the second-priciest place to live, after Singapore.

3. all foodstuff packed and I am ready to go

3. all foodstuff packed and I am ready to go

What does a country’s cost of living have to do with my trip, you may wonder. Well, contrary to many people’s perception, I do pay my own way most of the time, and Hong Kong will most likely be one of those trips.

Oh well, I’ve already got help from Lazada with preparing my ration for a good number of days. These snacks and beverages will greatly reduce my meal expenses in Hong Kong, much to my relief.

One thing I’ll definitely do is to stock up on Signature Snack healthy snacks and MAGGI Hot Mealz Curry Laksa Bowl. Yup, I need to fill my tummy as I plan to walk rather than depend on public transport, even though I have heard of the efficiency of the MTR.

Wish me luck on my next adventure!

GrabCar Arrives In Ipoh

Slightly more than a year after the arrival of Uber in Ipoh, GrabCar rolls in, not only to Ipoh but also to three other cities: Kuantan, Seremban and Kuching. I was in Kuantan recently but as I had a car, I did not have the chance to try out GrabCar then, until I returned to Ipoh.

1. request a Grab ride

1. request a Grab ride

So, I hailed my first ride in Ipoh lately, and it was an easy process. Perhaps, GrabCar’s application is even easier to use than Uber, after Uber’s mobile application was updated some time ago.

I’ve included some screenshots of the application but have blanked out some details to protect the privacy of my driver.

2. message the driver conveniently

2. message the driver conveniently

According to a reliable source, many Ipoh drivers are registered with both GrabCar and Uber. They just need to have two smartphones to run the two mobile apps at the same time.

She said that for a driver, it is better to drive for Grab because of the smaller radius. 5km versus 30km or something like that, if I remember correctly.

3. details of the ride

3. details of the ride

As for the rider, there is not much difference to go with GrabCar or Uber. Whichever runs a promotion, I say, but then again, GrabCar has reward points and Uber does not.

If you are new to GrabCar, perhaps you want to give it a try. Go to THIS GrabCar LINK.

The Osborne Apartments, Ipoh

When my friend, AJ, asked me to recommend Ipoh accommodation for his group of twenty friends, I was stumped for a minute.

While I am well-versed with Ipoh hotels and a couple of homestays, I really had no idea about the type of accommodation that he requires.

The Osborne Apartments, Ipoh

The Osborne Apartments, Ipoh

Putting AJ’s friends up at homestays is not viable as they would not be able to share a single unit, or units that are adjacent to each other.

Besides, most Ipoh homestays are located within residential areas and away from town, not meeting another of AJ’s requirement.

two-bedroom suite - living room

two-bedroom suite – living room

My search brought up The Osborne Apartments. Ah, I have heard about The Osborne for a long time but never found a reason to check them out until AJ sought my assistance.

two-bedroom suite - master bedroom

two-bedroom suite – master bedroom

The Osborne Apartments opened for business some five years ago but they are well maintained and still very much relevant for large family or group of travellers.

Their strategic location plays a part as well – right in the middle of town, within walking distance from some of Ipoh’s best eats such as Lou Wong Bean Sprout Chicken, Funny Mountain Soy Bean, Aun Kheng Lim Salted Chicken and Ipoh’s famous nasi ganja at Kedai Kopi Yong Suan.

two-bedroom suite - bedroom

two-bedroom suite – bedroom

There are a total of eight suites at The Osborne: 4 units 2-Bedroom, 2 units 3-Bedroom Junior and 2 units 3-Bedroom Family.

Each suite is equipped with a television set with ASTRO, DVD player, WiFi internet, refrigerator, microwave oven, kettle, iron, hair dryer, hot shower, and oh yes, air-conditioning!

Additional good news is that daily housekeeping is provided. You don’t even have to bring along your own toiletries or towel.

3-Bedroom Junior - living room

3-Bedroom Junior – living room

So, what are the rates like? The smallest suite of 2 bedrooms goes for RM278 nett per night. It can accommodate up to 5 adults and 2 children.

Meanwhile, the largest suite of 3-Bedroom Family is RM408 nett per night and accommodates 8 adults plus 2 kids.

3-Bedroom Junior - bedroom

3-Bedroom Junior – bedroom

Many people are confused about hotel accommodation with apartment stay and expect the same facilities, but it is like comparing an orange with an apple.

For most lodging apartments, breakfast is not included. However, this only means that we have more opportunities to eat out, allowing us to explore in-depth local delicacies.

3-Bedroom Junior - bedroom

3-Bedroom Junior – bedroom

Similar to modern hotels with multiple levels of security, suites at The Osborne Apartments are only accessible with key cards.

Do note that only staircase access is available here. Thus, it may not be friendly for older folk or those with health issues but then bedrooms are located on the first and second floors, indicating just a short climb.

3-Bedroom Family - living room

3-Bedroom Family – living room

Complimentary parking facility is provided on site. Whether you are on a road trip or ‘fly-and-drive’, knowing that your car is safely parked in a proper bay affords you a good night’s rest.

3-Bedroom Family - bedroom

3-Bedroom Family – bedroom

I personally have no particular preference of staying in a hotel or apartment.

On a short solo trip, I would choose to stay at a hotel but for longer stays, I love the space of an apartment and the facilities to prepare my own meals if I so fancy, particularly if I have travel companions. It definitely feels more like home.

While the fully-equipped kitchenette is great for guests who wish to prepare their own meals, those who don’t can conveniently access popular Ipoh eateries as Lou Wong Bean Sprout Chicken, Funny Mountain Soy Bean, Aun Kheng Lim Salted Chicken and Kedai Kopi Yong Suan’s nasi ganja are just within walking distance.

Like any high-end apartment, facilities within the property include an infinity pool, gym, sauna and children’s playground. These are all accessible to guests of The Majestic Ipoh By The Osborne at no additional cost.

Moreover, tenants enjoy daily housekeeping services. Didn’t I already mention that this is a luxurious stay? Don’t worry! The suites don’t come with a matching price tag!

Top 7 Things To Do In Pulau Ketam

$
0
0

Pulau Ketam is an idyllic fishing village that does not offer much in terms of adventure or excitement. During my visit, many of the shops prepared to close for the day by 7pm!

welcome to Pulau Ketam

welcome to Pulau Ketam

Maybe due to this extremely laid back lifestyle, a lot of my friends who live in Kuala Lumpur have not visited Pulau Ketam before because, and I quote, “What’s there to do on the island?”

Despite this “setback”, Pulau Ketam is an island worth visiting. In my opinion, it would suffice for a visitor to spend three days here because one can walk everywhere on the island, so you can imagine its size.

Do take note, Pulau Ketam is a mangrove island unlike those that offer sun, sand and surf. This one offers sun and mud. So, keep those bikinis at home but don’t forget the tube of sunscreen lotion.

Really, what’s there to do? After spending 4D/3N there recently, I have come up with a list for you. Here are the activities, in random order:

1) Cycling

bicycles for rent

bicycles for rent

Although it is possible to walk everywhere, it helps if you have a bicycle to cycle around. Bicycles are available for rent at only RM5 per day. Motorised ones are RM50 per day. Obviously, you are responsible to take good care of your rented vehicle. You crash, you pay for the damages.

2) Hunt for wall murals

mural hunting

mural hunting

Wall murals are beginning to grow on the island. I like to hunt for them, similar to what I did in Ipoh, Penang, Shah Alam and other places. I have no idea who drew these paintings; they are really talented.

3) Fishing

fishing

fishing

I don’t like fishing and can never understand how a person can sit (or stand) around for hours waiting for fish to bite the bait. Urgh!!! Still, this is one activity not to be missed by those who do love to fish!

4) Learn about local industries

learn about the local industries

learn about the local industries

Pulau Ketam is a fishing village, so the primary economic industry is related to fishing and sea products. Therefore, whether it is a trip to a fish farm or a cottage that processes shrimp for sale, it is educational. The locals are friendly and willingly share their knowledge with visitors.

5) Cruise in a wooden boat

a wooden boat

a wooden boat

If you have finished exploring Pulau Ketam, perhaps it is a good idea to expand your trip to the island beyond land. How about renting a wooden boat and cruise the waters.

6) Photography

photography

photography

Pulau Ketam has a vintage feel to it. The rickety wooden houses on stilts and other sights on and around the island produce enchanting photographs. Make friends with the locals to find out from them the best spots to catch sunrise or sunset.

7) Eat fresh seafood

eat fresh seafood

eat fresh seafood

What’s better to eat when on an island than the freshest seafood for breakfast, lunch and dinner? There are many eateries dotting the island, including pork-free establishments. Just take note of their business hours!

So, there you have it! The top seven things to do during your visit to Pulau Ketam. My favourite thing to do is No. 8, which is to do nothing!

At the jetty, there are three boat services to Pulau Ketam. There is the water taxi that takes just 20 minutes (Teksi Air Pulau Ketam Port Klang), then there is the air-con speed boat (Khim Hoong Ferry Services) and last but not least, a fairly new service that was just launched on 25th Nov, 2016 (Alibaba Pulau Ketam Cruises).

Food Hunting in Klang: 8 Recommended Eateries

I really should put the brakes on delicious food postings during the month of Ramadhan. Then again, after reading about Klang’s Bamboo Biryani in Malay Mail Online, I feel that I ought to write about my own culinary escapade in Klang, as a delegate of Eat.Travel.Write.5, organised by Gaya Travel Magazine, UPEN Selangor and Klang Municipal Council (MPK).

While I personally reviewed all of these eight places, do bear in mind that this is not an exhaustive list. There are many more mouth-watering food to discover. After all, Klang is the royal town of Selangor, steep in history, culture and heritage.

Also, this list is in random order, all the easier for you to drop by, to one or to all!

Chong Kok Kopitiam

1. traditional Hainanese breakfast at Chong Kok

1. traditional Hainanese breakfast at Chong Kok

Said to offer Klang’s best traditional Hainanese breakfast, a must-order dish is the ‘roti telur goyang’ or soft-boiled eggs on toast, where the toast is prepared over charcoal. Or maybe plain bread spread with homemade kaya and butter strikes your fancy?

2. roti telur goyang @ Chong Kok

2. roti telur goyang @ Chong Kok

I have been told that this was once a hotel-cum-bar. The 76-year-old kopitiam actually reminds me of Ipoh’s Sin Yoon Loong. By the way, if you seek something different from Hainanese, there is another local offering: nasi lemak sambal sotong.

Lontong Klang

3. Lontong Klang, Emporium Makan

3. Lontong Klang, Emporium Makan

As one of the stalls in the Klang food court known as Emporium Makan, Lontong Klang is not difficult to locate at all. Although lontong is traditionally only on the “Hari Raya” menu, Lontong Klang has offered this speciality as breakfast since 1970, before I was born!

4. lontong

4. lontong

In fact, they are so popular that they have branched off to Shah Alam and Bukit Tinggi. Price for lontong starts from RM4 but they do offer a more premium version that is slightly more expensive. Other dishes sold here include lontong ayam, nasi lemak and roti canai.

Business hours: 7am to 11am daily, closed on third Monday of the month

Restoran Seng Huat Bak Kut Teh (non-halal)
The original Klang bak kut teh is Seng Huat, also known as ‘bak kut teh Under the Bridge’. This eatery needs no further introduction. If you like your pork rib dish in herbal broth, you should stop by Seng Huat for your fix when you are in Klang.

5. bak kut teh @ Restoran Seng Huat Bak Kut Teh

5. bak kut teh @ Restoran Seng Huat Bak Kut Teh

Don’t miss the chance eating at the original shop but you have to be there really early as they get sold out super fast! Seng Huat also has a branch in Kepong.

Yap Kee
Just like how Chong Kok reminds me of Sin Yoon Loong, Yap Kee similarly got me thinking about Ipoh’s Yong Suan and its famous nasi ganja. Yap Kee is obviously a Chinese coffee shop but it is popular for its Indian banana leaf rice.

Apparently, they sell very quickly so be there early. Another thing to note about Yap Kee’s diners is that they all have kedondong asam boi ais to accompany their spicy meal. Thus, that was what I had as well. Food and drinks menus are said to be extremely limited but no one seems to mind.

Hours: 10am to 6pm

Claypot Asam Pedas / Nasi Telur Berlada ‘Andak’
From what I understand, there are quite a few food stalls in this Kampung Kuantan area that offer “telur berlada” but this one at TBG 97 seems to be the most well-received eatery. If you come by this family-run roadside stall operated in front of their family home, order anything with “telur berlada” and you will not go wrong.

Warung Pak Din

 8. karipap cheese @ Warung Pak Din

8. karipap cheese @ Warung Pak Din

Located in the middle of an established upmarket residential neighbourhood, Warung Pak Din is popular as a tea-time spot. The locals frequently come by for a selection of some fifty kuih-muih!

9. at Warung Pak Din

9. at Warung Pak Din

While there are various traditional Malay sweetmeats, other popular items include karipap cheese. Once you start eating it, you will have a difficult time stopping. And I am speaking from experience!

10. rojak @ Warung Pak Din

10. rojak @ Warung Pak Din

Besides toothsome kuih, other items on the menu are rice and noodle dishes, not forgetting to mention desserts like the ABC Tembikai Palm Grove, just what’s needed on a typical hot Malaysian afternoon.

11. beef noodles @ Warung Pak Din

11. beef noodles @ Warung Pak Din

Frankly speaking, to really enjoy Pak Din’s variety of offerings, one visit is insufficient. Then how many visits would be enough? I don’t know….depends on how much you can eat, I guess? There’s just so many items to savour at Warung Pak Din!!!

Restoran Sate Famili
If satay is your comfort food, Sate Famili is the place to be. Diners come here to eat nothing but satay as a regular meal. Well, some may go for the mini nasi lemak (Nasi Lemak Cik Ani) but satay is the staple food here.

12. Sate Famili

12. Sate Famili

Although there is a variety of meat on the skewers, I only opted for chicken. No red meat (satay daging and satay kambing) or offal (satay perut) for me, thank you very much. Still, I had a good meal. Not telling you how many sticks of satay I walloped. Malu….

Nasi Kukus Sotong Besar
Fancy a huge plate of fried giant squid for lunch? You have arrived at the right place. Although there are many items on the menu to choose from, I highly recommend the restaurant’s signature dish of Nasi Kukus Sotong Besar. To my delight, they also have kedondong asam boi. It seems to be the beverage of choice in Klang!

Preparing for a Long Road Trip

1. Amsoil 10w40 XL Series fully synthetic engine oil (L) & Amsoil Engine Flush (R)

1. Amsoil 10w40 XL Series fully synthetic engine oil (L) & Amsoil Engine Flush (R)

Actually, not one, not two, but THREE road trips! Yes! If you have been following my blog closely, you would know that I made four trips out of Ipoh in May. The weather was exceptionally hot and on every trip, I felt that I have had enough of being out and about and yearned to get home. The problem was that each time I was home, after a day or two, I longed to go on yet another trip. Tell me this is not a sign of being bitten by the wanderlust bug??

2. pour the whole bottle of Amsoil Engine Flush into the engine

2. pour the whole bottle of Amsoil Engine Flush into the engine

My schedule has slowed down significantly this month due to the fasting of my Muslim friends whom I sometimes travel with. But this doesn’t mean that I am not going anywhere. It just means that it is time to make my own plans – I am in the midst of preparing my itinerary and getting my car ready for some long-distance driving. Other things don’t need preparing, I am ready from the word ‘Go’ and so is my luggage.

3. run the engine idly for 15 minutes

3. run the engine idly for 15 minutes

So, yesterday morning saw me taking my car to my trusted workshop in Ipoh for an oil change. It’s really not the time for a change yet from the mileage clocked since the last change but then I thought it is better to have the car in tip top condition as I am going to make it work really hard! In any case, the previous engine oil was only semi-synthetic, thus I wanted something better. This time, I am using American brand, Amsoil XL 10w40, a fully synthetic engine oil.

4. still waiting for the 15 minutes to be up

4. still waiting for the 15 minutes to be up

In layman’s language, fully synthetic engine oil is far superior to semi-synthetic because it is fuel saving, meant for long distance driving and clocks double the mileage before a change is required. Also, you will feel that the engine is quieter yet more powerful. In addition, acceleration is quicker. Oh yes, did you know that fully synthetic engine oil creates less friction and heat, hence protects the engine from wear and tear? Although fully synthetic engine oil is priced higher off the shelf, it is more cost-saving in the long run in terms of car maintenance.

5. jack up the car and drain the engine of dirty oil and other impurities

5. jack up the car and drain the engine of dirty oil and other impurities

Before changing the engine oil, I had the engine flushed first. Again, I used Amsoil Engine Flush, as I was not confident of using different brands in case of conflict. My mechanic poured the whole bottle into the engine and ran the engine idly for 15 minutes and then drained off all the dirty oil and other impurities. That’s not good enough still. I had to change the oil filter. Bought the original Honda oil filter. If oil filter is not replaced, there is no point changing the oil, right?

6. new Honda oil filter

6. new Honda oil filter

Besides taking care of the engine oil, I also made sure that water in the radiator is sufficient. My mechanic was very attentive. He checked everything for me that needed checking when I told him that I’m going to “travel”.

7. pour in the Amsoil 10w40 XL Series fully synthetic engine oil

7. pour in the Amsoil 10w40 XL Series fully synthetic engine oil

Later, at the Shell petrol station, I pumped full tank but only with Ron95 lah! It’s good enough, as the new Shell Ron95 is with the latest DYNAFLEX technology. Are you aware that we are rewarded with double BonusLink points at Shell on their fuel products for the entire month of June? Then I had my tyre pressure checked, for all four tyres plus the spare one in the boot – only 30 psi is required for my car, a four-door sedan.

8. check the dipstick - mechanic declares A-OK!

8. check the dipstick – mechanic declares A-OK!

I believe my car is now more than ready to go on active duty. I usually take public transport when I travel but Perak is not a state that one could move about easily with buses and taxis, unfortunately. Nothing like having my own car, in this case.

9. top up water in radiator

9. top up water in radiator

So, how’s my itinerary? Here are three routes that I have drawn up for Perak. These could be day trips, or overnight trips. Will see how much time I am able to spare before I am needed in Ipoh again. Yeah! Can’t wait to start my engine! Who wants to join me???

M Roof Hotel & Residences, Ipoh

Who would have thought that an old abandoned bungalow in the corner lot of Ipoh Garden / Simee that was an eyesore for years could in the year of 2017 be transformed into a beautifully-appointed, classy 3-star business hotel?

1. M Roof Hotel & Residences in Ipoh

1. M Roof Hotel & Residences in Ipoh

Obviously, much time, effort and of course, money had been put into the project, but M Roof Hotel & Residences has in just a few short months become a major landmark in this mixed development area of Ipoh City.

2. at the lobby

2. at the lobby

3. lounge

3. lounge

As mentioned above, M Roof Hotel & Residences is really new. During my recent 4D/3N stay at the hotel, courtesy of Tourism Perak & Gaya Travel Magazine, the hotel has yet to be fully completed. On the works are a swimming pool, 500-pax ballroom and gymnasium.

4. the hanging plants

4. the hanging plants

5. Deluxe Twin Room

5. Deluxe Twin Room

In my opinion, other facilities that would make M Roof Hotel & Residences a primary choice for travellers, in addition to the above three, would be a bar with live band and its own merchandise store like what is available at M Boutique Hotel in another section of Ipoh.

6. washroom with glass partitions

7. Deluxe Plus (King)

7. Deluxe Plus (King)

If you are familiar with the M brand, you could easily recognise M Roof Hotel & Residences. The difference between M Boutique Hotel and M Roof Hotel & Residences is that M Boutique caters to a younger, hippier set of guests who want to enjoy something different and be surprised each time they set foot into the hotel.

8. Deluxe King

8. Deluxe King

9. Junior Suite King

Meanwhile, M Roof Hotel & Residences caters to a more mature, business class clientele. This is why room decor is standard Modernist-Minimalist concept across all 150 units rooms and suites.

Anyway, even though the hotel is not fully ready yet, I like to share some photos with you so that you know what to expect when you check in at M Roof Hotel & Residences.

Do take note that M Roof Hotel & Residences uses duvets of duck feather (down), which may give off a certain smell. Moreover, because of this, a stay at M Roof Hotel & Residences may not be suitable for guests who are allergic to organic matter.

So, show you the room tariff already, you ask?

Room Category / Rack Rate (nett) / Bar Rate (nett)
Superior Queen / RM300 / RM 190
Deluxe King / Twin / RM400 / RM220
Deluxe Plus (King) / RM500 / RM240
Junior Suite King / RM700 / RM320
Executive Suite King* / RM800 / RM480

Rates are inclusive 6% GST. Surcharge may apply during peak periods. All rates are subject to change without prior notice.

Rooms come with complimentary breakfast for two pax, at either Oldtown Grand or The Morning After. Similar to M Boutique Hotel, M Roof Hotel & Residences does not have its own F&B outlet but breakfast is served in partnership with the two outlets.

Check-in time is from 3pm and check-out time is 12 noon.

If you travel in a large group, you would probably prefer the Residences. For further information or reservation, contact:

Anyway, in the blink of an eye, Aloft KL Sentral is celebrating its fourth anniversary already, after its opening in March 2013. The 31-storey hotel consists of 482 spacious rooms and suites. Awesome Suite Deals at The Haven You Don’t Want to Miss

Since writing this post about staying at The Haven for only RM88.80+, several people have enquired how they can stay at The Haven at low rates without winning the stay via KTM tickets. Yea, I know, not everyone is that lucky to be a winner. I personally have taken numerous train rides since the launch of this promotion from 8th May and have yet to hit the jackpot.

Oh well, for people like us, it is better to just purchase a deal rather than wait for good luck to strike us. By the way, the excellent news is, even without holding the lucky KTM ticket, we can still enjoy a memorable, relaxing, luxurious stay at The Haven, only it won’t be at that extremely low rate of RM88.80+.

What are the chances of eating French in Kuala Selangor? Extremely high since the opening of Café Lumière sometime in the middle of May this year.

I wouldn’t say that Café Lumière has an entirely French menu, since there was no dish that I couldn’t pronounce. I would rather say, Café Lumière broadly serves Western.

Do be warned, though. Café Lumière has a rather limited menu. Basically, you won’t go wrong if you order what’s written on the small blackboard at their entrance. Have a look at the food photos that I have enclosed and match them with the blackboard the day I visited.

One thing I noticed is that Café Lumière’s owner, Gerald, and his wife, really put their hearts into preparing their orders, whether food or beverages. The herbs used in their cooking are fresh as well. Not only do they want to serve the most authentic French flavours, they are keen to offer healthy choices, too.

To me, Café Lumière is an eatery more suitable to lepak over cakes and coffee, rather than for main meals. If you are rushing for time, then this is not for you. The best thing to do is to rest and relax – chit chat over a cuppa and keep those phones away.

Encompassing some 800 acres of land, visitors can take a walk along the trail which leads them into secondary forests, circling a man-made lake and even through a mangrove swamp. This is home to a vast variety of flora and fauna.

Conservatively, it takes 1 hour 20 minutes to complete the 3.5km trail, including climbing up the observation towers. From what I read on the internet, there are supposed to be four trails but we were only told of one. Several paths seemed to have been blocked, probably due to safety concerns.

By the way, ticket prices are really affordable, at RM4 per adult and RM1 for student below 17 years old. Members of the Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) and senior citizens above 60 years of age pay just RM2. It is free of charge for children below 7 years old. These admission fares are known as Conservation Fee.

If you plan to visit Kuala Selangor Nature Park, remember to equip yourself with mosquito repellent, sufficient drinking water, a cap to protect yourself against the sun and an umbrella against the rain. Most importantly, bring along a camera to capture all the sights of nature. You are only allowed to take home photographs and memories, nothing else.

N.16 Bus Café, Sekinchan

1. N.16 Bus Café

N.16 is one of the newer attractions in Sekinchan. After spending a few hours out and about in the hot afternoon sun, we couldn’t wait to hop on the bus to get a respite from the heat. The idea of cooling down with a icy bottle of soft drink was most appealing.

We took out seats at the back of the bus only to be told that this section was reserved for those whose minimum bill was RM50. Oh well, since we thought we were there for just drinks, we moved to a smaller table nearer to the front of the bus.

After placing our orders, we realised that our bill would total above RM50, after all, and moved back to the reserved table! Ah, so much hassle! One thing good about the reserved table was that it has access to a power point, so I charged my phone while waiting to be served. As you know, when travelling, one can never have enough of battery juice.

By the way, diners may also choose to sit al fresco style but it would be foolish of us to do so in the middle of the day.

N.16 offers a rather limited menu, understandably. Not only were we on a bus that was stationary, it was also on top of a container, as you can see from photo #1. Look at the food that we ordered, for just afternoon tea. It was indeed a trip to eat, travel and sleep!
