The long-awaited opening of Asia’s first animation theme park, Movie Animation Park Studios (MAPS) finally arrived yesterday. I, along with other Annual and Perak Pass holders, had waited with bated breath for over a year.

Now that the RM520 million mega theme park on 52 acres of land is ready, I’d say it was well worth the wait because MAPS is a magical fantasy park like no other.

Do take note that yesterday’s opening of doors to the public was a soft launch and there are still some sections of the park that are undergoing technical rehearsals, namely: The Dream Zone, Blast Off Zone, as well as The Adventurers’ Cartoon Factory.

Conservatively, I would say that it takes a minimum three hours for a brisk walk through the park. However, for those of you who really indulge in all the rides and other attractions, it would take you at least six hours to enjoy them all. Yes, even at this stage!

So, is it an appropriate time to visit now? I don’t see why not. Admission on opening day itself (yesterday) exceeded 7,000 visitors. MAPS is suitable for kids three years and up, so bring your child and don’t forget your inner child.

Green & Golden Hues of Sekinchan

1. paddy ready for harvest

When I visited Sekinchan in January 2017, I lamented that I was there at the wrong time of the year as the field had just been harvested and it was all brown, instead of green and golden.

2.

2.

Well, life is definitely unpredicted as I found myself unwittingly visiting Sekinchan for the second time in May.

3.

3.

In my earlier postings about Sekinchan, I had mentioned that the best time to visit the paddy fields here is around June and December, just before harvesting takes place. This is because the planting season is in February and August, so visiting at other times offers different views.

4.

4.

The month of May was good enough for me – in fact, some plots of the crops had already been harvested, while other sections of the village were very smoky due to open burning.

5.

5.

Nevertheless, I got my wish to see the dozens of different hues of green and golden. I couldn’t stop capturing photos of the panoramic scenery.

6.

6.

This post serves no special purpose, just to share these captivating photos. If you are arranging to visit Sekinchan, read up on these attractions of Sekinchan to better plan your holiday!

Of the numerous times that I had walked past Home Motel during my two back-to-back visits to Pulau Ketam in May, there was not once that I spotted the motel open. It appeared to be closed for business.

I kinda suspected that Home Motel is also owned by Hotel Sea Lion as I noticed its logo printed on the hotel’s brochure.

Later, I managed to get some information about Home Motel and even talked my way into having a look inside so that I can share some photos with you for an additional option to put up at when you plan a vacation in Pulau Ketam.

4. room with one double bed

4. room with one double bed

Home Motel was opened for business in 2009. It is a motel converted from a double-storey shophouse, just a short walk from the Pulau Ketam Jetty and an even shorter distance from the private jetty next to BOMBA.

5. triple room

It only has 16 rooms. The three categories of rooms are: one double bed for two guests, two double beds for four guests, as well as one double and two single beds also for four guests.

By the looks of it, the primary reason for the establishment of Home Motel was to support Hotel Sea Lion Pulau Ketam during peak seasons.

Hotel Sea Lion Pulau Ketam, with a history of 22 years, can be so popular during the holidays that it often gets overbooked. When all 42 rooms are taken up, guests are offered accommodation at Home Motel, which they willingly accept.

Viewing the rooms of Home Motel, they do look similar to Hotel Sea Lion Pulau Ketam. The only difference, I’d say, is that Hotel Sea Lion offers sea views but Home Motel does not.

Five New Attractions To Visit In Ipoh Old Town

To be honest, Ipoh Old Town is not an area I want to head to as an Ipohite, especially during weekends and holidays. There’ll be scores of tourists that one could hardly walk in a straight line.

at Concubine Lane

at Concubine Lane

However, seeing that it has been months since I last visited, I recently made an effort to go, just to check out its development. Am I glad that I was there as I discovered a number of new attractions in Ipoh Old Town that a tourist might find interesting.

at Concubine Lane

at Concubine Lane

If you have been to Concubine Lane (Lorong Panglima) already and find that it is “nothing special”, then check out my list of five new attractions of Ipoh Old Town. The starting point of my trail is, naturally, Concubine Lane.

at Concubine Lane

1) Get the Key to Your Dreams in Dream Big World
A visitor could easily pass by Dream Big World along Concubine Lane without noticing it. That would be a shame as this is where you will get the key to your dreams.

Welcome to Dream Big World @ Concubine Lane

Welcome to Dream Big World @ Concubine Lane

How so? Although many have said that Dream Big World is a model car gallery, it is more than that. Besides being a gallery for model cars, where there are more than 500 different models on display, this is also where you can dream of travelling by airplane to some of the most exotic destinations in the world. Well, dreams are free, as they say. In Dream Big World’s case, it is merely RM5.

The Queen’s State Limousine (2002)

Opened in December 2016, Dream Big World is on the first floor of two shophouses, one facing Lorong Panglima (Concubine Lane) and the other facing Jalan Panglima (Panglima Street). Everything displayed is from the personal collection of Elvin Chew, a mechanical engineer, who began his collection in the 1990s when he was 14 years old. Initially, the plan was to set up a shop that trades in model kits but thinking out of the box, his dream became a reality in the form of Dream Big World.

Personally, I would say that Dream Big World is a treasure trove for model car collectors. If there is an item that is not available here, Elvin will even assist to source for it. 2) Get Artsy at KooKee IpohOldTown
A cursory glance tells me that KooKee IpohOldTown is a furniture shop-cum-art gallery. Obviously, I couldn’t be more wrong. Yes, there are plenty of wood furniture for sale here and the pieces of art on display are looking for a new home as well.

However, KooKee is actually also a space for artists to showcase their work to a larger audience, without incurring the cost. So, if you are an artist, you can consider displaying your art here for exposure, and perhaps sale.

Each floor has a particular theme, beginning with Ipoh’s dying trades on the ground floor, followed by scenes in a dim sum restaurant on the first floor, paying tribute to the building’s history when it was known as Lucky Building, which housed a dim sum eatery. The third floor recaptures the old activities of Sun Cinema, which was Wisma Chye Hin’s neighbour, before its demolition.

Ascending one floor, we are greeted by Ipoh Old Town of the 60s, 70s and 80s, before many of us were born. Top 5 Reasons to Visit Kuala Kangsar: History, Architecture, Photography, Craft & Food

$

Being the capital city of Perak, Ipoh has caught the limelight as the primary tourist destination in the state. However, Perak has way more to offer in every nook and corner. When people asked me about places of interest in Perak, I’d advise to spend a night in Ipoh and make a road trip to other parts of the state. Bring your car, I say, because it is not easy to move around without private transport, unfortunately.

So, today, I am sharing the top five reasons to visit Kuala Kangsar, or rather the District of Kuala Kangsar. Approximately an hour’s drive northwest of Ipoh, Kuala Kangsar, or KK in short, is steep in history by virtual of the fact that it is a royal town, like Klang is for Selangor.

Masjid Ubudiah (Ubudiah Mosque)
Standing proudly with its golden dome and minarets on Bukit Chandan in the royal town of Kuala Kangsar, Perak, this mosque was designed by Briton Arthur Benison Hubback, the same architect for the Ipoh and Kuala Lumpur railway stations.

Masjid Ubudiah

Masjid Ubudiah

The Ubudiah Mosque, built in 1917 at a cost of RM200,000, was on the commission of the reigning 28th Sultan of Perak, Sultan Idris Murshidul’adzam Shah, as an act of thanksgiving for recovery from an illness.

Sultan Azlan Shah Gallery
Officiated by HRH (the late) Sultan of Perak Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah on 9th December, 2003, Galeri Sultan Azlan Shah (Sultan Azlan Shah Gallery) in Kuala Kangsar is housed in the majestic palace, Istana Ulu (also known as Istana Kota) atop Bukit Chandan, just a stone’s throw away from Ubudiah Mosque.

Galeri Sultan Azlan Shah

Galeri Sultan Azlan Shah

This palace was built in 1898 but was only completed in 1903. During the reign of Sultan Azlan Shah, HRH decided to convert the palace into a gallery that exhibits his life’s journey. The conservation and refurbishment of the palace took two years while curating the exhibits took another six months.

Perak Royal Museum (Istana Kenangan)
Also known as Istana Kenangan, Istana Lembah and Istana Tepas, this building was originally built as a royal residence for HRH Sultan Iskandar Shah (Marhum Kadasallah), while awaiting the completion of Istana Iskandariah.

The building has now been converted into the Perak Royal Museum (Muzium Diraja Perak) that exhibits the history of the Perak monarchy and houses the heritage of the Perak State.

Gold thread embroidery
With patience and passion, Pn. Azizah bt. Hj. Adam’s hobby of embroidery has flourished into a sustainable cottage business for her family. With a work force of ten women, and her daughter Norfaizatol Fazleha, Pn. Azizah’s company, Azydar Enterprise, based in Bukit Chandan, Kuala Kangsar, has produced countless custom-made intricate household furnishing, particularly Muslim bridal bed sets.

Pn. Azizah, who has 35 years of experience behind her, said that according to her religion, her embroidery are all floral-based motifs. Animal motifs are not allowed in Islam. These gold-thread embroidery products by Azydar Enterprise are slightly more expensive, admitted Pn. Azizah. This is because they are all 100% manually sewn.

Labu Sayong
The sub-district of Sayong is well known for its labu. If you have the time, it is well-worth to check out how these earthen water gourds (or water pitchers) are made. If not, just grab a couple of them or more, for your own use or as gifts, a very apt souvenir as the labu is the icon of Perak.

The water gourd was once very popular in households because of its ability to keep water cool. Those were the days when not all families could afford a refrigerator.

These days, the function of the water gourd has gone beyond that and is more a decorative item, as can be observed from the different sizes, colours (glaze) and carving designs of water pitchers produced.

Oldest rubber tree
Besides being the royal town of Perak, Kuala Kangsar boasts one of the oldest rubber trees in Malaysia, at 140 years old. Standing tall just outside the Kuala Kangsar District Office, according to documentation, it is the only surviving rubber tree out of nine that were originally planted.

History says that the British were responsible in turning rubber into an important source of revenue for Malaysia, when Sir Hugh Low, the British Resident of Perak, encouraged the growth of rubber trees, seeing the rapid expansion of the car industry in the West.

Last but not least, there is the food….
Although there are certain quarters who claim that there is “nothing” to eat in Kuala Kangsar, you won’t go wrong if you stop to refuel at Yut Loy Coffee Shop or the riverside food court. Yut Loy Coffee Shop is famous for their Hainanese pau while the food court offers a combination of local fare.

Laksa Buyong, Kuala Kangsar

Laksa Buyong, Kuala Kangsar

Also, Kuala Kangsar is famous for laksa. There are many varieties, though. Photo of Laksa Buyong from Kuala Kangsar is for illustration purpose only.

So, there you have it. A few excellent reasons to head to Kuala Kangsar. Obviously, there are more waiting to be discovered. When are you hitting the road?

Many a time I had passed by this unique mosque in the past and it seemed to be closed. It was not until recently that I had the opportunity to set foot in it, as a delegate of Perak Tourism Management Berhad / Gaya Travel Magazine’s familiarisation trip to Perak to promote the state in conjunction with Visit Perak Year 2017.

Masjid Ihsaniah Iskandariah was formerly known as Masjid Lama Kampung Kuala Dal, and as you can tell from its name, it is located in Kampung Kuala Dal, Padang Rengas, less than 5km from Kuala Kangsar.

Masjid Ihsaniah Iskandariah

Masjid Ihsaniah Iskandariah

Built in 1936 with funds from the late Almarhum Paduka Seri Sultan Iskandar Shah, the 30th Sultan of Perak, this unique mosque was launched on 11th February, 1938 by His Royal Highness.

According to documentation, the design and ornaments of the mosque were inspired by the architecture of Istana Kenangan in nearby Bukit Chandan, with the walls made from woven panels of bamboo strip and in diamond motif which was the handiwork of village folk.

As explained by the Department of National Heritage (Malaysia), the mosque has twenty windows throughout. Those on the ground floor were built higher to provide privacy for the congregation. The windows are carved with shark gill motif, bean shoots, a crescent and a five-point star.

Moreover, the joints of the kelarai or tepas wall are decorated with carved motif of tikam seladang flower. If you noticed, the walls are painted in the colours of the Perak State flag of yellow, white and black, similar to the colours of Istana Kenangan.

This mosque was used until 1976, when it was abandoned. The Department of National Heritage took over the management in 2008 and extensive restoration work began in 2011. The mosque will be turned into a gallery and is open to the public from August 2017. Opening hours are from 8am to 5pm daily. Entrance is free of charge.

Taste Testing @ Starbucks Reserve®, SkyAvenue

1. Starbucks Reserve®, SkyAvenue

The coffee tasting session at Starbucks Reserve®, SkyAvenue was my second experience with the company. Although coffee is not my favourite beverage, I still enjoy going hands-on in learning how something is done. In this case, it was to learn the techniques of brewing coffee as well as the methods of tasting and drinking it.

 2. the tpical Starbucks counter

2. the typical Starbucks counter

By the way, Starbucks Reserve® at SkyAvenue is one of four such premium outlets in Malaysia by the company. It is different from the usual ‘mermaid’ Starbucks that we have known and loved. Starbucks Reserve® has a dedicated counter for coffee tasting, and it carries its own unique line of coffee in limited quantities. Even so, these offerings may not be available at all Starbucks Reserve® outlets, making each blend more exclusive.

 3. Starbucks Coffee Master Salleharon Ahmad introduces Starbucks Reserve®

3. Starbucks Coffee Master Salleharon Ahmad introduces Starbucks Reserve®

As you may be aware, different brewing techniques require its own equipment. We were shown the Chemex technique, which has a thicker filter to trap more oil, hence the coffee turns out to be more pungent. The other technique demonstrated was the Clover. It has a thinner filter, so less oil was trapped. Isn’t it strange that even though the coffee beans (Nicaragua La Roca) used were the same, a different technique of brewing resulted in contrasting tastes?

 4. Starbucks Coffee Master Salleharon Ahmad

4. Starbucks Coffee Master Salleharon Ahmad

Coffee tasting consists of four steps. First, cover 3/4 of the cup of coffee with your palm. Then close your eyes and smell the coffee. Allow the flavours and character of the coffee to transport you to the place where the coffee originated from. Indeed, through coffee, you are able to capture the true essence of the place and imagine it in your mind’s eye.

Next, slurp the coffee while it is still burning hot. Slurp it as though you are eating noodles and force the coffee to spray all over your palate. The third step is to locate. It means to see how long the taste of the coffee actually lingers on your palate. This is subjective, as some may find the taste to linger longer than others. The longer the coffee taste lingers, the higher its ‘body’ is.

6. this is how you smell your coffee

The fourth and final step would be to describe the taste of coffee. Again, this is a subjective matter, as taste always is.

The essence of loving coffee can be cultivated if we know more about coffee and the origin of its beans, brewing techniques and food matching. Starbucks Reserve® has provided a great platform for us who may not have access to this coffee education previously.

Tokyo Secret has recently introduced a line of beverages and this Oolong Cheese Creama that I had is just one of the four currently available. The others are Black Tea, Green Tea and Japanese Matcha. Those who love Japan or enjoy Japanese food will certainly appreciate Tokyo Secret as all ingredients used are imported from Japan.

Luggage Storage @ KL Sentral

I was at KL Sentral a couple of weeks ago and had some time to spare. Walking around, I came across this new facility for commuters to store their luggage.

These are automated lockers that would only open based on facial recognition and thumb print. They are available in three sizes: Large, Medium and Small, at a fee of RM40, RM20 and RM10 respectively for 24 hours.

Dr. Locker machines are in three languages

The machines are in three languages; English, Malay and Mandarin, so they cater to just about anyone. In any case, there are staff on duty 24/7 to assist commuters who require a helping hand.

2. commuters storing their luggage

I remember storing my luggage at KL Sentral once many years ago. I couldn’t locate them anymore. Later, I was informed that this company has moved their storage to NU Sentral. I don’t have information where exactly they are now but if they are in the mall, it is going to be a hassle to collect our luggage, should we arrive past mall opening hours.

On the other hand, Dr. Locker operates throughout the day and night. However, do be mindful that a full daily charge is imposed should you collect your luggage after midnight, even slightly past the time.

3. these lockers are in medium and small sizes

Still, it is better than lugging heavy luggage all over town, if we were just transiting Kuala Lumpur. What do you think?
