Since my first visit to Kuala Lumpur City Gallery in 2014, I have dropped by to the gallery on a number of occasions. Therefore, when I found out that the first stop of Kingz MG Malaysia convoy was to be KL City Gallery, I wasn’t too enthusiastic.

This is not to say that KL City Gallery is monotonous. In fact, of the times that I visited, there were always short exhibitions being hosted, with the keyword being “short”. Those weren’t events that I could write much about as they wrapped up quickly.

Miniature Wonders Art Gallery, Ipoh Old Town

1. Miniature Wonders Art Gallery

A friend tipped me off about a new attraction in Ipoh Old Town, Miniature Wonders Art Gallery, that exhibits dough sculptures. However, it was only yesterday, two months after its opening on 4th Nov 2017, that I managed to drop by for a visit.

2. the entrance to Miniature Wonders Art Gallery

2. the entrance to Miniature Wonders Art Gallery

Miniature Wonders Art Gallery along Jalan Market, is owned and managed by Phoon Lek Kuin and his wife. Phoon and his father-in-law, Xu Shi-Ying, hand make these dough sculptures upon receiving orders from customers.

3. Song Dynasty Royal Banquet

3. Song Dynasty Royal Banquet

Xu is a Beijing-born third generation master dough sculptor and is well known around the world for his skill. Living in Beijing, he produces the figurines, about 5.5cm in height each, while his Ipoh-born son-in-law Phoon takes care of the landscaping.

4. Ching Dynasty Royal Banquet

4. Ching Dynasty Royal Banquet

In the early days, these dough sculptures were just children’s toys or display art. When Xu’s and Phoon’s talents are combined, these dough dolls tell a story in their respective 3D dioramas.

5. Tang Dynasty Royal Banquet

5. Tang Dynasty Royal Banquet

I remember visiting a similar dough sculpture exhibition at Kinta City exactly ten years ago. You can check out my post HERE, by the same partnership of Xu and Phoon.

6. Yuan Dynasty Royal Banquet

6. Yuan Dynasty Royal Banquet

Strangely, since then, I did not come across similar craft in Malaysia, let alone in Ipoh. However, when I was in Beijing, I saw artisans creating similar figurines by the road side.

7. Qin Dynasty Royal Banquet

7. Qin Dynasty Royal Banquet

Miniature Wonders Art Gallery is a double-storey exhibition centre. To map out his ideas, Phoon took two years of research and planning, followed by five years to manually create these exhibits. Needless to say, dough sculpture is an art form that requires plenty of patience, time and resources.

8. let's head upstairs

8. let’s head upstairs

Visiting this gallery, one can’t help but marvel at how ordinary flour, mixed with water and then poster colour, can produce such works of art. That’s a lot of heart and creativity put into the ingredients, I must point out.

9. general view of the upper floor

9. general view of the upper floor

The process of preparing the dough is tedious enough. Flour is first mixed with water. It is then steamed until the flour is cooked. To reduce the elasticity from the dough, this steaming process is undertaken a few rounds.

10. some of these items were made more than 30 years ago

10. some of these items were made more than 30 years ago

Once satisfied, the dough is mixed with poster colour, to become colour dough. As you can tell, these figurines are not coloured over with poster colour. After the dough is shaped, it is left to air dry. Again, it is not as simple as that, because it is still a long way to completion.

The highlights at Miniature Wonders are the 56-foot 3D diorama of the painting “Along the River During the Qingming Festival” by Song Dynasty artist Zhang Zeduan (1085–1145), as well as a walnut shell with 100 tiny dough figurines in it that depict the story of the Monkey King causing havoc in the Heavenly Palace.

Other exhibits of note are the Tang Dynasty Royal Banquet, Once Upon A Time In Beijing as well as The Making of the Terracotta Army, including the warriors and horses.

14. scene from Along the River During the Qingming Festival: busy street scene during Song Dynasty era

There are many more interesting exhibits, of course, and totally worth spending time to go through them to admire the craft as well as learn about cultural history.

Road to Agro Tourism 3

The 4D/3N familiarisation tour of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, particularly on agro tourism destinations and attractions wrapped up with a bang in the form of a showdown between metal legends XPDC and Cromok live in concert at MAEPS, Serdang on 3rd Feb.

Yours truly was humbled to be invited on the tour organised and hosted by Malaysia Tourism Council (MTC) to receive first hand experience to better promote agro tourism in both Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya.

The trip was in conjunction with Federal Territory Day, which is observed on 1st Feb annually, and received staunch support from the Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-based Industries (MOA), Ministry of Tourism and Culture Malaysia (MOTAC), and Ministry of Federal Territories (KWP).

Of course, this fam trip wouldn’t have been successful without the support and cooperation of product owners, such as Mardi Maeps Sdn. Bhd. and Universiti Putra Malaysia, just to name a couple of them.

Day 1
This 3rd series of Road to Agro Tourism was filled with activities from the get-go, beginning with the launch of the programme by YBhg Dato’ Affendi Zahari, Chairperson of Kampong Bharu Development Corporation (KBCORP) at a dinner event hosted at the new Tamu Hotel & Suites.

For your information, Road to Agro Tourism, a product of MTC, was launched in September 2017 with a road trip to Johor (Southern Zone), followed by its second series in Dec 2017 to Cameron Highlands (Central Zone).

There are a total of ten series, to cover the entire country, including East Malaysia. Besides promoting agro tourism both domestically and internationally, the main objectives of Road to Agro Tourism are to discover unique accommodation options, local food, ethnic culture, and other interesting aspects.

After the formalities were done and dusted, it was time to walk off the calories, via Acara 10,000 Langkah Berbusana @ Kg Bharu, a night walk around Kampung Bharu, to discover the neighbourhood on foot.

I have to admit that having visited Kampung Bahru on different occasions, it looks different when visiting on foot, at night. It’s called seeing things in a another light, literally.

Before arriving at Putrajaya, though, we made a stop, a lengthy one, at MAEPS Serdang. I have always wanted to visit but without my own transport, it didn’t seem that viable.

You can imagine how grateful I was of this opportunity to get to know MAEPS better, and experience their many newer attractions at the same time. By the way, its House of Kambing has gone viral on social media. Stay tuned to this blog for my write up on it!

Slightly after lunch, it was time to proceed to Putrajaya, where our first stop was Taman Warisan Putrajaya. The rain caused some changes to our schedule but it was OK with me.

I have covered many Putrajaya attractions previous but Taman Warisan Putrajaya was one that slipped me until now. Well, thankfully, the rain stopped shortly after that, so we could continue to enjoy the sights and sounds of Putrajaya in the form of Cruise Tasik Putrajaya.

Once refueled, it was time to make a move to Taman Ekuesterian Putrajaya. As a horse lover, the equestrian park is not new to me but I was glad to revisit. If not for Road to Agro Tourism, I don’t know when I will set foot in at Putrajaya Equestrian Park again.

After an entire afternoon out in the sun, I was delighted to have the chance to check into our hotel for the night: the 5-star Pulse Grande Putrajaya. For your information, it was formerly known as Putrajaya Shangri-La.

Apart from its name, I noted that nothing has changed during our inspection of the property, and I can still recall my stay there five years ago.

Nonetheless, it was a hotel that I expected a good night’s rest from! However, before that could be done, it was time for evening entertainment; we headed out to Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC) for the much-acclaimed live theatre performance, Fantasy Rainforest.

It’s only appropriate that MAEPS is included in our agro tourism programme since it has so many agro-based experiences to offer visitors within its 130 hectares of land.

Did you know that MAEPS is one of Asia’s most comprehensive showground and exposition park facility, mainly to promote agro-based events and activities? This is the permanent venue for Southeast Asia’s leading agricultural show known as Malaysia Agriculture, Horticulture & Agrotourism, or MAHA in short, held biennially.

Two years ago, the focus has been on MAEPS Agro Tourism Park to catch in on agro tourism, one of the fastest growing travel trends.

Even though I have visited Putrajaya numerous times and have covered many of its attractions over the years, somehow, Taman Warisan Pertanian (Agricultural Heritage Park) has escaped me. Being a delegate of Road to Agro Tourism 3rd Series gave me access to the local attraction, for which I am grateful.

2. buggy for rent at RM25 per vehicle for 7

Located in the southern part of Putrajaya’s Precinct 16, Taman Warisan Pertanian measures some 35 acres. Like its name suggests, this is a one-stop park that showcases the agricultural development of Malaysia through generations. These commercial crops include rubber trees, oil palms, coffee, tea, coca, fruits, herbs, as well as spices.

With so much to see, I would suggest that visitors rent the buggy (RM25 per vehicle for 7), otherwise, it would be a long and tiring walk around the undulating terrain.

Taman Warisan Pertanian is also an interactive and educational park, so visitors are able to gain hands-on experience through various agricultural activities conducted throughout the year.

During the visit by Road to Agro Tourism #3, the weather was not favourable, as you can see from these gloomy photos. Still, I believe you get a good overview of what Agricultural Heritage Park is. Find out their programmes and try to participate in them. There’s knowledge to be gained!

Since opening for business on 1st April, 2017, Putrajaya FoodTrucks Hotspot, which is located near Dorsett Putrajaya, has seen a steady stream of customers. It is a pleasure for those buying dinner and those who seek a place to just lepak over a drink. After all, most of Putrajaya is “closed” after office hours.

Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) has a fairly new attraction, and it is in the form of an Edu-Park, to ride on the edu-tourism trend that is growing quickly around the world. With the motto “Play, Learn & Stay Young”, experiential learning begins here and now.
