One of my recent hotel stays was reserved through an online travel agent. I encountered a problem subsequently, and sent a message to the hotel via its Facebook page. The page admin informed me that I would enjoy a better rate if I had booked directly via the hotel official website.

Really? I didn’t quite understand, as I had always believed that I would get a steeper discount via the various booking websites. Apparently not so, at least not all the time.

If you are planning a vacation at The Haven Resort Hotel, Ipoh – All Suites, do book directly to enjoy a long list of exclusives!

I was hosted for a night at Best Western Petaling Jaya earlier this week, a good break away from my desk for a short while. It was a wonderful 24 hours, whereby I just spent the entire time within the hotel and the commercial block where it is situated. I have known about AnCasa Hotel for a long time, as a regular visitor to the capital city by express bus, disembarking at Puduraya. However, when the north-bound bus terminal relocated to Bandar Tasik Selatan, I hardly swing by this way. Nonetheless, I still find its location very strategic and convenient. Mid-Autumn Festivities in Hong Kong & Taiwan

$

One of the most significant festivals in the Chinese lunar calendar is Mid-Autumn Festival. To give thanks to a bountiful autumn harvest, it is observed on September 24 this year, or annually on the 15th day of the 8th moon according to the lunar calendar.

Celebrated by Chinese people around the world due to China’s cultural influence, the way in which it is observed may differ from country to country. However, there are quite a few similarities. To many Chinese, Mid-Autumn Festival, or Moon Festival, is also a time to gather with family. Featured prominently at the reunion dinner are mooncakes, a traditional delicacy. After a hearty meal, the family adjourns to the garden to chit-chat as they gaze at the big, round moon, said to be at its brightest and fullest. It is autumnal equinox, after all!

Mid-Autumn in Hong Kong
Mid-Autumn Festival is a major celebration in Hong Kong, similar to other countries with a predominately Chinese population. To tourists, this time of the year is one of the most colourful to visit Hong Kong, as lantern displays, including thematic lanterns, and exhibitions run throughout the month in many parts of the territory.

The main highlight and grandest celebration is the Mid-Autumn Urban Carnival at Victoria Park on September 24, an all-event under one roof with a full cultural programme. Expect to witness, among others, energetic kung fu demonstration, melodious folk song and lively cultural dance performances, as well as traditional craft workshops.

Keeping tradition alive
Of all these activities, not to be missed is the Fire Dragon Dance by Tai Hang community, a fiery ancient ritual that is over a hundred years old. It all began over a century ago when the Tai Hang village was afflicted by a series of calamities, beginning with a typhoon, a plague and then a python attack on livestock. To put a stop to this run of bad luck, a fire dragon dance was performed for three days and nights, amidst the loud beating of drums and crackling of fireworks.

Gigantic dragon
Today, Tai Hang in Causeway Bay is no longer a village but its dragon dance ritual lives on. On the eve of Mid-Autumn Festival, rituals are performed at Lin Fa Temple before the dragon weaves its way through Tai Hang over three days. The dance involves 300 performers to hoist the 67-metre long dragon, whose head alone weighs a massive 48 kg. It is a sight to behold.

Neighbouring Taiwan
Over in Taiwan, to the east of Hong Kong across the South China Sea, Moon Festival, as it is more commonly known here, is also celebrated with similar enthusiasm, albeit in a less colourful manner. After all, unlike Hong Kong, one is hard pressed to look for lantern displays and carnivals during this season. Don’t worry though, if you do find yourself visiting Taiwan during Moon Festival, there are still plenty of memorable moments to take home.

Barbecue parties
A fairly recent Moon Festival custom in Taiwan is the hosting of barbecue parties in the moonlight, all the better to enjoy the moon at its brightest with loved ones and even strangers, complemented by mooncakes, pomelos and tea, an integral part of the festivity.

BBQ. Photo credit: Travel King TW

All across Taiwan, BBQ grills are set up just about anywhere outdoors, not only in the backyard, on the sidewalks, along riverside parks or campsites. Coming out in droves as early as 3pm, the sky is soon filled with smoke and autumn breeze, with the sweet aroma of BBQ.

Moon gazing
While in Taiwan during Moon Festival, remember to stake out the best spots for the most picturesque views of the full moon. With the cooperation of Mother Nature by granting us fine weather, one of the world’s tallest buildings, Taipei 101, is a good bet to catch the full moon.

Taipei 101. Photo credit: travelhdwallpapers.com

Other landmarks around Taipei that also offer clear, unobstructed views of the moon include Tamsui Fisherman’s Wharf, Daan Forest Park, and Yangmingshan National Park.

Not in Taipei? Recommended viewing points around the island are Alishan in Chiayi County, Xizi Bay in Kaohsiung, Nanwan in Pingtung County, Dongshan River Water Park in Yilan County, Wuling Farm in Taichung, and Anping Distrcit in Tainan.

So, will you be in Hong Kong or Taiwan during Mid-Autumn Festival? Make sure to catch all these happenings centred around the festivity to get the most out of your visit.

Fiscal Fun at Bank Negara Malaysia Museum and Art Gallery

Beyond the usual renowned tourist attractions like the Petronas Towers lies a hidden gem along one of the more nondescript streets of Kuala Lumpur: the Bank Negara Malaysia Museum and Art Gallery.

While Malaysia is home to a number of interesting museums, such as the Perak Museum just a couple of hours north in Taiping, the Bank Negara Malaysia Museum and Art Gallery offers a different kind of experience. Over just a few hours of your day, you get to experience fiscal fun and learning like no other.

Sasana Kijang (image credit: Bank Negara Malaysia Museum and Art Gallery)

Sasana Kijang (image credit: Bank Negara Malaysia Museum and Art Gallery)

Located along Jalan Dato’ Onn, this gallery boasts a stunning, cutting-edge facade of glass and titanium. The Malaysia Traveller notes that the gallery is housed inside Sasana Kijang, the Central Bank of Malaysia’s hub for learning.

The museum was built to provide Malaysian people with information about the country’s economy and finance systems. Catering to visitors of all ages, the museum renders a great avenue for learning outside of textbooks and classrooms.

Nautilus Staircase (image credit: Bank Negara Malaysia Museum and Art Gallery)

Nautilus Staircase (image credit: Bank Negara Malaysia Museum and Art Gallery)

All in all, it is split into six galleries, namely: the Art Gallery, Economic Gallery, Islamic Finance Gallery, Numismatics Gallery, Children’s Gallery, and the Bank Negara Malaysia Gallery.

One of its main highlights is the Economic Gallery, which details the country’s economic growth, including the World Economic Crises from as far back as 1588 and as recently as 2010.

For coin and banknote aficionados, the Numismatics Gallery is a good place to check out if you’re looking to peruse different forms of currency throughout the years. It features an extensive collection of Portuguese and Dutch-era coins, Sabah and Sarawak money, primitive currencies from Borneo, etc.

For kids who are just getting acquainted with financial concepts, the Children’s Gallery is a fun, playful way for them to do so. Visitors get to enter through a Money Tunnel lined with over a million Ringgit in cash, in different denominations atop an acrylic wall. It also features interactive displays that explore the basics of money, the history of bank notes and coins, etc.

Through all of these exhibits, the Bank Negara Malaysia Gallery hopes to shine a light on the importance of the Central Bank’s role in the development of the national economy.

In their overview of the Malaysian Ringgit, FXCM highlights how the central bank helps manage national development by keeping a close eye on key economic indicators that affect day-to-day life in the country. These include asset prices and consumer debt, as the bank works towards maintaining economic stability and growth.

Given the volatile global economy, it’s useful to turn to these institutions to understand the financial happenings locally and beyond. Thanks to Bank Negara, learning about the Malaysian economy has never been this exciting.

Similarly, the Islamic Finance Gallery allows visitors to understand Malaysia as one of the world’s centres for Islamic banking. It also traces how the early Middle Eastern concepts of commerce and finance have come to be.

Though it’s technically a Bank Museum, it’s not all about money. The Art Gallery aims to emphasise the Bank’s role in promoting Malaysian arts and heritage. Their recent Seni Cetakan exhibit, for example, put the spotlight on Malaysian printmaking history.

It is just one of the many ways that the Gallery is keeping even the oldest of art forms alive today. Currently, it is home to more than 1,500 artworks sourced from all over Malaysia and other ASEAN countries since 1962.

With all these attractions, the Bank Negara Malaysia Museum and Art Gallery is quickly becoming a tourist hotbed. Therefore, it’s well worth adding this landmark to your itinerary the next time you’re in Kuala Lumpur.

The thunderous roar of the rumbling engine of not one but more than a hundred Harvey-Davidson motorcycles was the sweetest music to the ears of many, as the Kingz MG (Motorcycle Group) convoy snaked its way from the west coast to the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, over the 3-day weekend in conjunction with Malaysia Day.

It wasn’t as straight-forward as it had seem on paper, as the bus broke down and had to be sent to a workshop for repair, resulting in passengers having a four-hour eating-cum-shopping break at Giant Gombak. We were soon on our way, though, and arrived at our designated accommodation for the night, Kuala Terengganu’s Hotel Seri Malaysia, just an hour later than scheduled.

Saturday was a brand new day, with all vehicles consolidated and fuelled, as well as energy replenished. A full day of activities laid ahead, wrapping up with Kingz Annual Dinner. What made it even more exciting was the participation of riders from Iron Head MG and Harley Owners Group (HOG) Terengganu. It was brotherhood at its best, brought together by their common passion for Harley bikes.

After that, it was time to push off to the captivating Terrapuri Heritage Village at Pantai Penarik, for rest and recreation. The ride along narrow kampung roads was not as monotonous as it would be on the highway. Moreover, friendly locals came out of their houses and waved ‘hello’ to the convoy. It was a rare sight for them, I believe, or for anyone. How often can one see a fleet of 100+ roaring Harley bikes?

Although we were feted well at Terrapuri, that was just refreshment. Lunch was waiting at Kampung Durian Burong, Kuala Terengganu, at the home of a member of Harley Owners Group (HOG) Terengganu. The 1+ hour of ride in the heat of the day did not dampen the bikers’ enthusiasm. Just thinking of the scrumptious meal, especially of Terengganu’s famous food of nasi dagang and keropok lekor, was enough to keep them going.

No matter how delicious the lunch was, the bikers had to move on as there was serious business to take care of, at Taman Sinar Harapan, Kuala Terengganu. In fact, this visit to the special needs school was the highlight of the 3D/2N ride, an annual Corporate Social Responsibility initiative by Kingz MG. Passing the hat around, more than RM5,000 was raised on the spot.

If you do not know yet, Zok Noodle House serves authentic Hong Kong / Macau cuisine and dim sum, as well as offering a wide variety of noodles.

One of the most popular noodle item is its Fresh Prawn Wanton Noodles. This chef’s recommendation is said to be prepared meticulously using only a superior selection of shrimps and pork with an 8:2 lean/fat ratio.

What makes the noodles outstanding is possibly its broth, whereby its essence is extracted from flounder fish, fresh pork bone, chicken and shrimp, double-boiled for six hours.

If you had read my post yesterday (ibis Melaka, Hotel in the Heart of the Action), you would know that I went to Melaka armed with a list of eateries that I compiled after speaking to some locals.

2. old skool interior

2. old skool interior

It was essential that I dine at places that only the community know best, rather than mainstream touristy spots. Event though ultimately, most of my meals were taken care of at ibis kitchen, I was able to make time for one place and it happened to be Ta Chi Nyonya House.

3. decoration of old photographs by the window

3. decoration of old photographs by the window

Ta Chi, or literally Big Sister, has been in business for the past 12 years. Located at the corner shophouse opposite St. Peter’s Church, Melaka, it’s very easy to overlook it as cars overshoot the corner, but of course, the locals are familiar with that area.

 4. Peranakan art

4. Peranakan art

Ta Chi Nyonya House is led by Nyonya Florence Tong in the kitchen, with front of the house managed by her husband, Peter Yong. Therefore, when dining at Ta Chi Nyonya House, consider yourself returning to your grandparents’ home for a meal: home-cooked, warm and cosy.

 5. a lunch of kampung -style Peranakan cuisine, complemented by a fusion Peranakan coffee (far left)

5. a lunch of kampung -style Peranakan cuisine, complemented by a fusion Peranakan coffee (far left)

So, what was lunch at Ta Chi Nyonya House? Only signature dishes as you can see from these photos: Nyonya Lemak Laksa, Nyonya Nasi Lemak, Nyonya Otak-Otak, Tauhu Bakar, Nyonya Mee Siam, and desserts of traditional Nyonya dumpling (chang) complemented by Durian Cendol and fusion Peranakan Coffee. The Peranakan Coffee is one of its kind that’s only available at Ta Chi as it’s a creation of the barrista son of Florence and Peter.

 6. Nyonya Lemak Laksa

6. Nyonya Lemak Laksa

The Nyonya Lemak Laksa was surprisingly rather spicy for me but then I have laid off spicy food for quite a while. This Nyonya-style laksa was prepared in rich, spiced coconut soup. It was served with a full egg, cut into two sides, and a large prawn.

 7. Nyonya Nasi Lemak

7. Nyonya Nasi Lemak

The Nyonya Nasi Lemak with rendang ayam is another crowd favourite. The rice is cooked and coloured with the blue of bunga telang (Clitoria ternatea). What makes or breaks nasi lemak is not so much its colour or decoration but its sambal. It was on point here, especially when savoured together with the rendang paste of the chicken.

8. Nyonya Otak-Otak

8. Nyonya Otak-Otak

The fish-based Otak-Otak is of course, prepared in Nyonya style. I like it because I could taste the fish, plus it is cooked without artificial colouring. While most of us are more familiar with otak-otak in strips, this serving comes in a large slab. It’s good enough for four pax, in my opinion.

9. Tauhu Bakar

9. Tauhu Bakar

Tauhu Bakar at Ta Chi Nyonya House is unique as the fried tauhu is refried inside out, after cutting into half rectangularly, then stuffed with shredded cucumber and topped with grounded peanuts. If you like crispy food, this is one dish to go for.

10. Nyonya Mee Siam

10. Nyonya Mee Siam

The spicy-cum-sourish Nyonya Mee Siam is memorable. It’s actually Thai-style fried beehoon, garnished with strips of fried egg and cucumber. Squeeze the lime over the noodles and pour the chilli sauce over it. For an extra oomph, there’s a dollop of sambal as well.

11. Cendol Durian

11. Cendol Durian

When in Melaka, one certainly must try the cendol. There are two choices of cendol at Ta Chi Nyonya House – one with durian, one original. The greedy me just needed to try both servings to find out the differences.

12. two versions of Cendol

12. two versions of Cendol

Both are very generous with the gula Melaka, which is exactly my preference. If you like durian, your first choice should be cendol durian!

 13. Nyonya Chang (dumpling)

13. Nyonya Chang (dumpling)

The traditional Nyonya dumpling (chang) features blue corners, also from the colour of bunga telang (Clitoria ternatea). Wrapped in dried bamboo leaves, the dumpling is filled with minced chicken meat and chopped mushroom. This Nyonya dumpling isn’t only aesthetically pleasing, it delights one’s sense of taste as well.

Meanwhile, the popular Night Safari is available on Fridays, Saturdays, eve of public holidays and school holidays from 8pm until 11pm. Unlike the day time zoo, the Night Safari provides visitors with a unique chance to observe the behaviour of nocturnal animals in their natural habitats.

I would love to visit the Night Safari one day, but from my experience visiting the Taiping Zoo Night Safari, I won’t have any photos to share. It’s just impossible to take photos of the animals in the dark of the night, as flash is disallowed.

It’s all right. This was my daytime visit. Therefore, I am able to share some photos of the zoo’s residents, from birds to rabbits, giraffes, lion, and more.

When the sun got hotter, though, the animals went into hiding. Hah! Smart of them! This means that I need to make a second visit in order to see the primates.

To make your zoo visit more interactive, I suggest to plan your outing to coincide with feeding times, bird shows and keeper talk. That would be very entertaining and interesting for photography or videography, too.

Encore Melaka: An Impressively Immersive Performance

artist’s impression of Encore Melaka (theatre) at night

Exiting from Encore Melaka after watching a 70-minute of performance, I can only say, “Wow!” For someone who hardly gets impressed over anything, I was truly blown away by Encore Melaka. You can say that I have yet to see a big snake defecate (大蛇屙屎). Say what you want, if you ever find yourself in the historic city, Encore Melaka is a definite stop. It will be worth every Ringgit of your ticket.

Opened its doors to the public on 1st July this year, the world-class Encore Melaka is a state-of-the-art production by celebrated director Ms. Wang Chaoge, the creative force behind the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games Opening and Closing Ceremonies. Encore Melaka is a result of Ms. Wang’s 2-year research on Melaka’s history, culture, tradition and her people.

Therefore, through the eyes of Ms. Wang, immerse yourself in the depiction of Melaka’s beginnings and growth through time and space over generations of people, via a myriad of compelling music and dances in a compilation of cultural stories that reflect a society that embraces diversity and inclusiveness.

Kicking off the mega show is a recount of the long forgotten tales of the early voyagers of Parameswara and the legacy of Admiral Cheng Ho’s diplomatic mission, sailing from China with his fleet of ships. From that point, the audience is transported through the eras of indigenous settlement, cross-cultural encounters of Peranakan community, and more.

 Nyonya dance scene

Presented by 200 local performers in the three main languages of Malaysia; Bahasa Malaysia, English and Tamil, alongside local dialects as well as Portuguese, Encore Melaka reflects the harmonious cultural mix that exists within the state.

There are a total of seven interwoven stories: Parameswara, Cheng Ho, Nyonya & Wedding, Six Mothers, Pregnant Mothers, Wau, and a Finale to wrap up the entire performance.

Encore Melaka is the newest presentation from China’s iconic Impression Series, established in 2003 by renowned directors Zhang Yimou, Fan Yue, as well as Ms. Wang herself. Ten highly-acclaimed productions have been staged since its inception. Melaka was handpicked, out of 150 contesting countries, by Ms. Wang for the coveted first Impression Series performance staged outside China.

You may still wonder what’s so captivating about Encore Melaka. Well, the answer lies in this Southeast Asia’s first performing arts theatre that features a 360-degree rotating audience platform that faces a 240-metre-long stage with multiple hydraulic stages. During the performance, the 3D projection mapping with intricate threatre props create a virtual reality that takes the audience in a travel through time.

Among the scenes, I was most impressed with the water display. As I watched, I marvelled at how it was possible to have “rain” on stage, and the next minute, it was dry. Oh yeah, the rotating stage slipped my mind. Ah, the wonder of technology!

The design of Encore Melaka theatre was led by chief architect Mr. Wang Ge, specifically for Encore Melaka to deliver an awe-inspiring experience. The geometric ceiling of the building features thousands of fish scale-like LED panels to reflect light from Melaka’s vibrant skyscape. It embodies the cloud and the sea, movement and serenity, where East meets West.

The Encore Melaka theatre with a 2000 seating capacity is located at a prominent site named Impression City, along the city’s waterfront, occupying 15 acres of land in a new tourism-cultural integrated development by Yong Tai Berhad.

1. Pangkor’s iconic floating mosque, Masjid Al-Badr Seribu Selawat

While I have visited the floating mosques in Melaka (Masjid Selat Melaka) and Terengganu (Masjid Kristal), I am glad that I finally had the opportunity to visit Perak’s very own floating mosque, the first in the state, known as Masjid Al-Badr Seribu Selawat.

Built at a cost of RM11.7 million, it took slightly over 2.5 years to complete, with a size of 1708.8 sq. metres, that can accommodate 1,500 worshippers concurrently. The massive project finally wrapped up in October 2016 and officiated by HRH Sultan Perak Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah (35th Sultan of Perak) on 8th June, 2017.

Masjid Al-Badr Seribu Selawat, located in Kampung Teluk Gedong, has been appropriately named in reference to the 1,000 prayers that have been carved on the walls and pillars of the mosque, inside and out. It was the dream project of Y.B. Dato’ Seri Diraja Dr. Zambry Abdul Kadir, the 11th Menteri Besar of Perak, who is a Pangkor boy.

Another distinctive feature of the mosque, besides its 1,000 engraved prayers/scriptures, is the unique Perakian architecture, with aspects of Turkish and Middle Eastern influences. Most of all, the floral motifs were inspired by the golden thread embroidery elements or bunga tekat craft that Perak is known for.

The mosque is open to visitors, including non-Muslims, only during non-prayer times. Do take note to dress appropriately when visiting places of worship, as a sign of respect. Jubah is available on loan.
