It is a ฿20 tuk tuk ride away, either direction. If you prefer to walk, it may take you 30 – 45 minutes, although Thai people, like Malaysians, do not like to walk. Walking directions: to the East from Kim Yong Market to hotel or to the Southeast from hotel to Asean Night Bazaar.

Top 5 Things To Know About Hat Yai, Thailand Before Your First Trip

Hat Yai, the largest city of Thailand’s Songkhla Province, and its business centre, used to be like a second home for many Ipohites. There were many shuttle vans and buses making weekly trips from Ipoh in the 1980s. I don’t find such service these days, probably because Hat Yai is no longer popular among Ipohites.

Not to worry, though, as there are still buses that ply the Ipoh – Hat Yai route, just not as frequently. In fact, travellers by bus disembark in the city centre, which makes it very convenient for those without private transport while visiting the city.

Other ways to go to Hat Yai include by rail on Keretapi Tanah Melayu train and self-drive. During my first and recent trip to Hat Yai, I noticed that about 90% of tourists in Hat Yai are Malaysians. Many of them drive, especially those who live in border states in northern Peninsular Malaysia, including Perak.

Yours truly took a flight from Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport, also known as Subang SkyPark Terminal or simply, Subang Airport. Flight time is about 1.5 hours. Yes, since 1st Dec, 2017, Malindo Air Malaysia flies direct from Subang SkyPark Terminal (SZB) and Penang International Airport (PEN) to Hat Yai International Airport (HDY).

Have you been to Hat Yai before? If you haven’t, here are some tips for you.

Money – How much do you need?
The official currency is Thai Baht (฿), of course. Just for reference, when I was there, the foreign exchange rate was THB100 = RM12.80 (or RM100 = THB781.25). For me, to convert Baht to Ringgit, I just multiply by 0.128.

How much would you need? For an average spender, allocate RM150 a day to cover accommodation, transport, food, shopping and massage. Yes, the Ringgit is not as strong against the Baht as it once was but we can still benefit from the currency exchange.

Transport – Of songthaew, tuk-tuk, taxi and Grab
In Hat Yai, there are many transportation options, from car rental as low as ฿1150 per day to chartering a tuk-tuk.

Songthaew is Hat Yai’s public transport where a type of pick-up truck is used. These trucks are painted in different colours to serve various routes. Fare is as low as ฿10.

songthaew - pick up trucks used as public transport in Thailand

songthaew – pick up trucks used as public transport in Thailand

The songthaew that runs the airport route has the word “airport” written in Thai at the top of its front. It is ฿30 per passenger from Hat Yai International Airport to Hat Yai city centre, alighting at Kim Yong Market or Clock Tower.

blue songthaew

Tuk-tuks run in the city centre and a ride can be had for as low as ฿20 to ฿30. They are available for charter as well, if you plan to go somewhere out of the way. Hailing a tuk-tuk is very easy. Just walk along the road and there will be drivers honking at you. Always negotiate the price down, but do be reasonable with your counter offer.

There are also motorbike public transport. The motorcyclists wear a vest that anyone can identify with. You can also take it, for a fare, if you are OK with hugging sweaty strange men from behind.

tuk-tuk

tuk-tuk

You can ask your hotel for assistance with transport. They can help you to book a taxi or charter a tuk-tuk. From experience, most drivers of chartered tuk-tuk (which are of better condition than those that ply the streets all day) can only communicate in Thai, so that could be a problem if you want to visit a certain place that is not in the pre-planned itinerary.

Grab and Uber were newly launched in Hat Yai when I was there. Install the Grab app (Uber is now defunct) to receive promo codes and get discounts on your rides. Do take note that like every other city, ride hailing may not work in outskirt locations, for example, in Hat Yai Municipal Park.

Phra Maha Chedi Tripob Trimongkol (Stainless Steel Temple) in Hat Yai

Phra Maha Chedi Tripob Trimongkol (Stainless Steel Temple) in Hat Yai

SIM card – Mobile internet
Hotels and cafés may offer free WiFi connection but we also need internet connection when we are out navigating our way in a new city and to hail a ride. For digital nomads like me, the internet is as important as water.

There are quite a few mobile service providers in Thailand. AIS and True come to mind. I took DTAC, upon the recommendation of a friend. Price: ฿99 for the SIM pack, inclusive of five days unlimited mobile internet. If you need the service for more days, it will cost you more, of course.

The problem is that some shops may charge you ฿99 for just the SIM pack and you would need to top up ฿50, for example, for mobile data. So, do be careful and understand what you are paying for.

To activate the SIM card, your passport is required. Some shops may be able to activate it for you without passport but that’s not legal. Some may be OK even if you just produce a photo of your passport (details page) because it has been held by your hotel, but there are others who would insist on having the physical passport. Your photo is also required, and it can be taken randomly.

Souvenirs – What to get?
I wasn’t huge on buying souvenirs when I was in Hat Yai. As I have mentioned before, I have enjoyed these all along when family and friends holiday in Hat Yai since the 1980s.

If you wonder what souvenir you should buy in Hat Yai, it’s usually elephant print clothes and bags, as well as tidbits such as My Chewy Milk Candy, Koh-Kae peanuts, cashew nuts and Lay’s potato chips with flavours that are only found in Thailand. If you don’t mind the weight, you can get Thai sauces and packet drinks. There are so many types that are not available in Malaysia.

Khlong Hae Floating Market – top Hat Yai attraction, but make sure it’s open!
If it’s suggested that there is only one place you can visit in Hat Yai, Thailand, choose Khlong Hae Floating Market. Located at Khlong Hae, Hat Yai, the famous waterside market is about 30 minutes’ drive from Hat Yai city centre.

view of Khlong Hae Floating Market from above

view of Khlong Hae Floating Market from above

If you don’t have private transport, charter a tuk tuk – going rate is about ฿500 return trip. Driver will wait at designated area, within the compound of Wat Khlong Hae. Pay the driver only when you are back in town.

One thing to note during your visit is that most sellers are environmentally conscious. They use clay pots, bamboo tubes, coconut shells to pack their food and drinks, instead of plastic bags or foam boxes.

Khlong Hae Floating Market only opens on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 1pm to 9pm (local time). Be there latest by 8pm or your trip won’t be worthwhile.

One of the highlights of my luxurious 3D/2N vacation to Langkawi Island last week hosted by Resorts World Langkawi was a sunset cruise on-board Tropical Charters Langkawi’s twin-deck catamaran. The boat left the Resorts World Langkawi marina at about 5pm and off we went sailing in the Andaman Sea.

Well, amidst free-flow drinks of cocktails, mocktails and a good variety of other beverages, guests on board have the opportunity to mingle with one another. Those looking to get wet can jump off the boat, or experience the one-of-a-kind salt water “Jacuzzi”.

Langkawi SkyCab – The Steepest Cable Car In The World

1. Oriental Village, Langkawi

On my way to Langkawi’s Oriental Village to ride the SkyCab, I thought that it would be my first experience on the famous Langkawi cable car. Ah, I had actually forgotten that I have taken a ride before, six years ago! It was ages ago, no wonder I had no memory of it.

It was only upon my arrival that I recalled my one and only Langkawi SkyCab ride. At the time, my friends and I were only able to ride up to the Middle Station due to maintenance. Thankfully, for this trip, I could enjoy the full experience that SkyCab offers, including SkyBridge and Sky Glide. Yahoo!

Langkawi’s cable car is an iconic tourism product of the island. Located at Burau Bay at a family-oriented entertainment-cum-retail hub called Oriental Village, it is the steepest cable car ride in the world. Taking visitors over 700 metres above sea level overlooking Mt. Machinchang, there is much to see, if you dare to look down!

The highlight of this ride, in my opinion, is seeing Andaman Sea beyond the horizon. The view is simply breathtaking! If you do not fear heights and are into nature, take a ride on the Panorama Langkawi SkyCab and enjoy seeing the hillside flora, waterfalls and wildlife. To make it more fascinating, go on the glass-bottom gondola and experience having the forest underneath your feet. They are not cold, hopefully! Hahaha!

Taking the SkyCab, you can alight at the Middle Station, where you casually take a walk to the viewing platforms, 650 metres above sea level. This is where you are able to immerse yourself in a panoramic view of Langkawi and its neighbouring islands.

The more adventurous visitors, on the other hand, can alight at the Top Station, to access the SkyBridge, another icon of the island. The journey from Base Station to Top Station takes only about 15 minutes covering a distance of 2.2km. That could very well be the longest 15 minutes of your life, though!

Completed in 2004, SkyBridge is the longest free-span and curved suspension bridge built atop the Machinchang Mountain. While a visitor can walk to SkyBridge from Top Station via the SkyTrail, it is recommended that one should take the SkyGlide, a type of elevator, as it provides yet another one-of-a-kind experience.

Other attractions at the Top Station include SkyBoutique, SkyBistro and SkyPos. Their names pretty much explain what they are! Once you have had enough of the bird’s-eye view of Langkawi, it’s time to descend, also by SkyCab. The fare for both ways are RM40 (Malaysian adult) and RM30 (Malaysian child). Non-Malaysian adult pays RM15 more while child, another RM10.

At the Base Station, there are also scores of other attractions and activities. Each attraction has its own entrance fee, although there are combo packages that are cheaper on the whole, than buying individual tickets.

We are almost hitting mid-April and it is time to start cracking our head on a treat for our parents. Just a gentle reminder, this year, Mother’s Day falls on May 13 and Father’s Day, June 17.

You may think there’s plenty of time to plan but believe me, time flies by so swiftly that before we realise, it’s May and then June already!

While I personally am fine with impromptu travels, when it comes to my folks, planning is required. One month is sufficient to plan, especially when I discovered that The Haven Resort Hotel Ipoh All Suites is currently running a Mother’s Day and Father’s Day promotion, valid for May and June.

How timely, I say! But do take note that this offer is good for the first 50 reservations only, so act fast ‘cos time and tide wait for no children.

Check the above poster to see how you can honour your parents with a luxurious holiday, and to do so at one of the most serene family resorts in Ipoh.

I was rather amused when I came across I Love Yoo! when I was at SkyAvenue, Resorts World Genting. Firstly, I was tickled by the play in its name. Secondly, I was amazed that there is an eatery in Genting Highlands that is dedicated to the humble Yootiao!

I Love Yoo! certainly reminds me of home, as Yootiao, or more popularly known as “Yau Char Kway” used to be my breakfast and/or tea. I still love it but rarely have the chance to eat it these days.

Although Ipoh now has her own Inside Scoop outlet, I still haven’t found the time to visit and to indulge in the most mouth-watering of ice creams. With me spending half my time away from Ipoh and the other half stuck in front of the computer, it is really a luxury to plan something like that these days.

Inside Scoop, SkyAvenue

Inside Scoop, SkyAvenue

However, the opening of Inside Scoop in Ipoh some months ago reminded me of my indulgence at its sister outlet at SkyAvenue, Resorts World Genting some time ago. This modest ice cream kiosk has more than ten different flavours to choose from.

a scoop of Nutty Nutella topped with a scoop of Rum & Raisin

a scoop of Nutty Nutella topped with a scoop of Rum & Raisin

I wanted to go for sorbet but I was afraid that it would be too sourish and I couldn’t finish it. I didn’t want to waste, so I ended up choosing my all time favourites, Nutty Nutella and Rum & Raisin. These, to me, are safe flavours that I can enjoy anytime!

I am reluctant to admit that I caved in to temptation by ordering two scoops instead of one. Aih!! Have you been to Inside Scoop yet? Which are your favourite ice cream flavours?

Do take note that Inside Scoop is no longer in business at SkyAvenue. Luckily for me, I can indulge in Inside Scoop right here in Ipoh!

24-Hour Food Trail Eating Marathon @ SkyAvenue, Resorts World Genting

$

Yours truly was invited by Resorts World Genting last weekend to take on a 24-hour food trail challenge that consisted of 23 F&B outlets. Avid readers would know that this wasn’t my first eating marathon at Resorts World Genting. I’ve been on 36-hour and 12-hour eating trails previously, and came out of them alive and well-fed. This was no exception, no surprise here.

Obviously, to eat everything that was served to me within that stipulated number of hours was humanly impossible. That’s why it’s important to strategise. Kudos also to my team mates who helped dig in! Phew!

Here’s a list of the eateries that we visited, in alphabetical order. These came highly recommended by both Resorts World Genting and SkyAvenue / First World Plaza but most of the time, we were allowed to order whatever we wanted.

Ah Yip Herbal Soup
This was my second visit to Ah Yip Herbal Soup at SkyAvenue. While the first time was a heavy meal of Ipoh Bak Kut Teh, Ginseng Stew Chicken Soup and Bean Paste Duck, this time was a very light meal with just two varieties of herbal soups. Ah, that’s what Ah Yip is well known for.

We had Mushroom Fish Bladder Soup and Coconut Chicken Soup – both are signature soups on the menu. Drinking herbal soup, it is a good idea to know the benefits you are seeking from the herbs. For example, Mushroom Fish Bladder Soup promotes health and strengthens body system.

If you are looking for other tonics, get recommendation from the friendly staff, who’d be more than happy to assist.

Babajia
I love Babajia for its Peranakan theme. This “Baba House” is where you should head to if you seek Peranakan cuisine while visiting Resorts World Genting. I dined at Babajia previously and remembered that I loved my food very much, so I ordered the same two items: Nyonya Laksa and Char Kway Teow.

 Babajia @ SkyAvenue

This time, I added a plate of satay. When the satay, I was shocked at its XXL-sized skewers. Can you see how large they are?

Babajia is one of the handful of eateries at SkyAvenue that opens for 24/7. If you are someone who craves for food at odd hours, Babajia should be your top choice.

Bar.B.Q Plaza
Are you into grill-cum-steamboat dining concept? If this is you kind of cuisine, look out for Bar.B.Q Plaza, a newly opened eatery at SkyAvenue.

Bar.B.Q Plaza, SkyAvenue

I do admit that self-cooking Mongolian/Japanese style barbeque does not rock my boat but I was game for the experience and was lucky to have a dining mate who enjoyed doing all the cooking.

We ordered the Value Set valued at RM138.80, good for four pax, so there were four bowls of rice, four glasses of drinks and high-quality meat enough for four. This set came with free cabbage refill, too.

BMS Organics
Wasn’t I happy to discover that I was to visit BMS Organics again. Do you know what BMS stands for? It’s Body, Mind, Soul. This is a meat-free restaurant that serves healthy food only.

BMS Organics, SkyAvenue

One of my regular items when dining at BMS Organics is the BMS Soy Milk Curry Laksa with handmade noodles. The taste and flavour of the curry is on point every time.

Meat-free or healthy food (MSG-free) does not have to be tasteless. Try BMS Organics to believe it.

Boat Noodle
The joy of eating boat noodle, a Thai-style noodle dish, is to see how high you can stack your bowls. The idea for these mini bowls originated from the Floating Market of Ayutthaya in Thailand, where it is impractical to use large bowls.

Boat Noodle, SkyAvenue

At SkyAvenue’s Boat Noodle, each bowl of noodles is priced at RM2.50. Toppings go for another RM2.50 per bowl as well. The three popular toppings are fried chicken skin, fried wanton skin and fried chicken meatballs.

Led by Outlet Manager Ahmed Shuvo, the crew here is one of the friendliest I have met in SkyAvenue. Definitely worth a second, third and fourth visit.

dal.komm Coffee
dal.komm Coffee doesn’t just serve good coffee to wash down the sweet pastries, the ambience here is amazing as well.

DÔME Café
I bumped into my Ipoh friends when dining at DÔME Café. They told me that they were looking for really kaw coffee and ended up at DÔME. I reminded them that they are not in Ipoh, best known for our white coffee, therefore, they have to make do with what’s available. Luckily, DÔME Café is said to offer the world’s finest coffees.

The item that I had is called “Little Bowl Noodles”. Do you see that the bowls are even smaller than Boat Noodle? I actually like this 4-in-1 set because with just one order, I was able to eat four different bowls of noodles: Laksa, Green Curry, Curry & Prawn Mee.

Starbucks Reserve
Of the six Starbucks Reserve outlets in Malaysia, I have only ever been to this one at SkyAvenue. This time, we participated in a coffee tasting session at the Starbucks Experience Bar.

The two newly introduced coffee beans that we had the opportunity to taste were Kenya Kamwangi and Guatemala Flor Del Rosario. These two flavours of coffees, purposely introduced at the start of the Spring season, are only available at Starbucks Reserve Stores, and for a limited time only. So, if you would also like to get a taste of either Kenya Kamwangi or Guatemala Flor Del Rosario, head over to a Starbucks Reserve outlet near you.

Texas Chicken
With the opening of Texas Chicken in Ipoh, everyone has been telling me to go and try and see how different it is from Kentucky Fried Chicken. Well, I finally gave Texas Chicken a try but it was at SkyAvenue.

The fried chicken cuts from Texas are indeed big, juicy and most of all, crunchy. Coupled with these signature Cheese Fries, it was a fast food meal worth remembering. Of course, the meal would be incomplete without desserts. We opted for Strawberry Shortcake.

This time at Tian Ma (Heavenly Horse), I was served with Chicken Porridge with Bird’s Nest and Bird’s Nest Coconut Juice. Price for Chicken Porridge is RM38 for one bowl and RM19 for the second bowl. Do take note that the latter is only available this June.

Top 8 Snacks & Specialities Outlets @ SkyAvenue, Resorts World Genting

With over a hundred F&B outlets within SkyAvenue itself, it really is not an easy task to look for a personal favourite. There are just too many good ones. Besides, with new items introduced to the menu regularly, an eatery can move to the top of the list simply because of that one food or drink.

Today, I have complied a list of top 8 snacks and specialities outlets in SkyAvenue. Do take note that this is my own preference, and may not reflect yours. On the other hand, if I can make repeated visits to them, there surely is a reason (or attraction).

So, here goes, in alphabetical order:

dal.komm Coffee
dal.komm Coffee doesn’t just serve good coffee to wash down the sweet pastries, the ambience here is amazing as well.

Having visited before, I instinctively ordered the same drinks that I ordered during the first visit. Perhaps, I enjoyed them so much that they were retained in my subconscious mind?

I paired the beverages with Strawberry Lava Cruffin. What a delicious dessert this was, I am sure you can tell from my photo!

Dream Color
This is a new outlet that sells drinks, very colourful drinks! There are different categories of beverages: Butterfly Series, Cloud Series, and Tea Series, among others.

Dream Color, SkyAvenue

Served in 550ml-sized tall, transparent bottles, the beverages are mixed in layers on top of ice cubes, which give off a beautiful colour combination. These concoctions are best consumed within two hours. When ready to drink, turn the bottle upside down, instead of shaking it.

Gindaco
If you love piping hot takoyaki balls, you should try Gindaco. Also like Eggette Lab, Gindaco Takoyakis are served in a variety of flavours. Get them in six or eight pieces.

May I suggest that to compare the taste of Gindaco sauce, to also order the Original? Seen here are the Original and new topping, Ebi Mayo.

I Love Yoo!
The observant reader would realise that I had just written about SkyAvenue’s I Love Yoo! Well, that was from my previous visit.

I Love Yoo!, SkyAvenue

I Love Yoo!, SkyAvenue

I Love Yoo!, as mentioned, is an eatery that’s dedicated to the Yoo Tiao. It is also included in this 24-hour food trail, much to my delight. As you can see, the Yoo Tiao is a must in every serving.

Top 6 Recommended Restaurants @ SkyAvenue, RWG #1

With over a hundred Food & Beverage outlets in SkyAvenue, Resorts World Genting, one needs to visit numerous times just to dine at a fraction of the restaurants. Well, here is a list of Top 6 recommended restaurants that I have compiled, so that you won’t feel overwhelmed and will know which to “attack” first, as a newbie to Resorts World Genting in general, and SkyAvenue in particular.

Check out my personal favourites, in alphabetical order.

Ah Yip Herbal Soup, SkyAvenue

Boat Noodle, SkyAvenue

At SkyAvenue’s Boat Noodle, each bowl of noodles is priced at RM2.50. Toppings go for another RM2.50 per bowl as well. The three popular toppings are fried chicken skin, fried wanton skin and fried chicken meatballs.

Led by Outlet Manager Ahmed Shuvo, the crew here is one of the friendliest I have met in SkyAvenue. Definitely worth a second, third and fourth visit.
