Market Lane (Second Concubine Lane), Ipoh Old Town

$

On July 11, 2015, local community leaders took a baby step to revitalise Market Lane or what was known as “Sam Lai Hong”, Cantonese for “Second Concubine Lane”.

Market Lane now joins Lorong Panglima (Concubine Lane or Yi Lai Hong in Cantonese) as the only two streets in Ipoh with road signages in Chinese.

Ipoh Old Town

red and white suspended umbrellas along Market Lane, which is known to locals as 2nd Concubine Lane

Market Lane, believed to be established in 1894, similar to Panglima Lane (1908), the shop houses along this street were where tin tycoons kept their second concubines.

History has it that these two lanes (Panglima Lane and Market Lane), plus Wife Lane (now Lorong Hale) were owned by Towkay (Boss) Yau Tet Shin and the rental income from these properties was managed by his wife and respective concubines.

With the success of Lorong Panglima as a new tourist destination in this old section of Ipoh, where the majority of the shops have been refurbished and repurposed, it is hoped that interest in the area will spread to neighbouring streets so that more people in the community get to enjoy the benefits of tourism.

Ipoh Old Town

At this point, the attraction of Market Lane is just in its history and background, an area notorious for opium dens, gambling houses and brothels.

Over time, I believe that with the participation of local residents, Market Lane will be as popular as Panglima Lane.

He said, “We have not cut down any trees nor blasted any hills. We also created special pits to decompose waste matter for use as fertilisers in the garden.”

These are obviously just a fraction of initiatives taken to maintain the property’s green environment. Anyone who has visited The Haven would be impressed with the high and wide windows or the iron grilled doors with multiple-hole puncture to allow air flow, all aimed at reducing the dependency on air-conditioners.

Merdeka Palace Hotel wins hands down when it comes to location. I love the fact that it faces Padang Merdeka (Merdeka Field) and is just within walking distance from the popular Waterfront strip, Plaza Merdeka shopping mall, many shop houses offering a good range of products and services, as well as historical sites, such as Fort Margherita.

Featuring a colonial-style architecture, Merdeka Palace Hotel is located in the historic and cultural centre of old Kuching, and is only approximately 25 mintues’ drive from the Kuching International Airport. Incidentally, the airport is suffering from a similar fate as the Sultan Azlan Shah Airport in Ipoh did, where the only international route is Singapore. At least, we now also have flights to Medan, Indonesia.

Overall, the hotel, previously known as Aurora Hotel before it was renamed 17 years ago, may be a little dated but the good news is that with their new owners (Felda Investment Corporation Sdn. Bhd.) since June 1, 2015, the hotel is being refurbished in stages. And the management is working on providing complimentary WiFi connectivity, at least in public areas for a start.

12. Ristorante Beccari and the many accolades it has received

Ristorante Beccari is believed to be the one and only Italian restaurant attached to a hotel. It is named after Odoardo Beccari, an Italian who arrived in Sarawak on an expedition on June 19, 1865. Now helmed by Chef De Cuisine Gedang Jetom, it is possibly the only Italian restaurant in Kuching that serves wood-fired pizza.

Chef Gedang, of Bidayuh descent, has extensive experience working in the kitchens of star-rated hotels. He had been in the opening teams of both Hilton and Riverside Majestic Hotel in Kuching. He subsequently joined Ristorante Beccari when it was first established, rising from the ranks, having learnt the trade under the tutelage of five Italian chefs.

In one of these photos is the wood-fired vegetable pizza. This thin-crust pizza is listed on the menu as Verdure Dell’orto. It consists of zucchini slices, eggplant, roasted sweet capsicum, mushroom, sweet onion and sliced tomato. It is priced at RM36+.

The drinks we had were (L-R) Seattle Sunrise (carrot juice, orange juice, vanilla ice cream and milk) at RM11, Luciado de Mango (mango juice, milk, honey and dashes of strawberry syrup) at RM11 and fresh pineapple juice (RM15.50 nett). Seattle Sunrise and Luciado de Mango were ordered from Seattle Coffee & Tea, which is also under the charge of Chef Gedang.

Seattle Coffee & Tea

I was informed that Seattle Coffee & Tea was the first franchise coffee outlet in Kuching even before Starbucks arrived. However, it seems that many people have forgotten about it, probably because it is situated within the hotel building and is not distinctive to the public.

16. Seattle Coffee & Tea

However, Seattle Coffee & Tea which serves a myriad of freshly brewed coffee and tea blends also offers a good selection of freshly baked cakes, pastries and breads. This is definitely the place to be for a quiet tea break where one could just sit down and enjoy the pungent aroma of coffee.

One afternoon, we had Smoked Caprese which is smoked salmon fish fillet with grated mozzarella cheese, tomato and basil leaf (RM18). The drink in the photo is Seattle Sunrise (RM11).

Pusat Terapi Bekam Kelly

1. relaxing body massage at Pusat Refleksologi Kelly, Ipoh

As you are aware, I recently returned from a 6D/5N trip to Kuching. It was hectic and I needed another vacation to recover from one, if that makes any sense. However, with a tonne of work waiting for me to tackle, that was not possible and so, I opted for the next best thing….a full relaxing body massage!

Pusat Terapi Bekam Kelly

2. one of the eight massage rooms

I only had a foot massage when I was in Kuching as time didn’t permit a 2-hour body massage. Upon my return to Ipoh, I headed to Pusat Terapi Bekam Kelly (also known as Pusat Refleksologi Kelly), which is located next to Symphony Suites Hotel, as I needed a body massage to work the kinks out of my stiff muscles.

Pusat Terapi Bekam Kelly

3. foot reflexology in progress

This reflexology-cum-massage centre was opened in March, 2015. There are ten female massage therapists (masseuses) from Thailand and China, hence, customers can opt for either Thai-style or Chinese-style massage.

Pusat Terapi Bekam Kelly

4. enjoying foot reflexology on a comfortable massage chair

Besides full body massage for up to two hours, other services include foot reflexology, cupping (ba guan) and scrapping (gua sha). Sorry, no hanky-panky!

5. ginger extract foot care pack

Like many similar centres, there are two tiers of pricing: peak and off-peak hours.

Here are the rates for the different services:
Cupping (ba guan) for 30 minutes – RM35
Scrapping (gua sha) for 30 minutes – RM35

1 hour foot reflexology (off peak hours: 10am – 2pm) – RM38
1 hour foot reflexology (peak hours: after 2pm) – RM45

1 hour full body relaxing massage (off peak hours: 10am – 2pm) – RM39.90

1 hour full body relaxing massage (peak hours: after 2pm) – RM50
1.5 hours full body relaxing massage (peak hours: after 2pm) – RM80
2 hours full body relaxing massage (peak hours: after 2pm) – RM100

Note: customers who opt for minimum of 1.5 hours full body massage will receive either one of these free-of-charge:

a) essential oil (to be used in the massage)
b) scrapping (gua sha)
c) cupping (ba guan)

Pusat Terapi Bekam Kelly

Package 2 (RM500 for 12 full body massages any time of the day)
*Buy ten full body massages (1 hour) and receive TWO full body massages (1 hour) at any time of the day.

Pusat Terapi Bekam Kelly

7. the massage centre is adjacent to Symphony Suites Hotel and its After 5 Bar Lounge

Tie-up with Symphony Suites Hotel
As mentioned, this reflexology centre and the hotel are neighbours. Naturally, they have forged a tie-up to benefit hotel guests. Any guest (show hotel room key card) who takes up a full body massage (1 hour) will receive one of these for free:

a) essential oil (to be used in the massage)
b) scrapping (gua sha)
c) cupping (ba guan)

Note: non-guest can only enjoy this complimentary service with at least 1.5 hours of full body massage.

Café Colbar (Colbar Eating House), Singapore

Colbar Eating House

1. 9A, Whitchurch Road

Colbar in short, for Colonial Bar, but also known as Café Colbar and Colbar Eating House, seems to be very popular in Singapore. It came highly recommended by my friend, Malcolm, who told me it is a “rustic, colonial eatery”.

Upon our arrival, I asked him, “Where is the colonial building?” In my mind, I had envisioned something along the lines of the Ipoh Town Hall building. Maybe not as majestic, but close.

I guess a Singaporean’s perception is really different from a Malaysian’s, especially one who is from a small town. Well, Ipoh is a city but compared to Singapore, it is small. I’m sure you get my meaning.

Anyway, I chatted with a local who was having his lunch there. I asked him if there is any other place in Singapore with this setting, and he answered, “No.” I said, “Come to Perak, we have plenty of such shops in smaller towns like Sungkai, Bidor and Tapah, just to name a few.”

Tiong Bahru Bakery by Gontran Cherrier & Spa Esprit Group came highly recommended by a couple of friends when they learned that I was one a cafe-hopping quest.

Tiong Bahru Bakery Singapore

This one at the corner of Eng Hoon Street in the up-and-coming expats enclave of Tiong Bahru, is one of three outlets in the chain. The other two are in Tangs Orchard and Raffles City.

2. full house during brunch

It was full-house when we were there for brunch. I would say that without a menu, and yet with so many choices of sandwiches, pastries and coffee, the experience could be overwhelming.

Tiong Bahru Bakery Singapore

3. cappucino

First, you need to queue at the counter, give the food and drink choices a glance and make your order. Then find your table, if there’s any seat left! Yes, that’s how popular the artisan bakery is.

4. the building of Tiong Bahru Bakery in Singapore

I am not someone who likes to dine at a crowded place, or have the patience to wait to be served. But to really try the food (and coffee) here, one trip is definitely insufficient.

And so, I reserve my comments, although Wei Sim said to try the squid ink buns!

I don’t have much information about this Housemen’s Canteen but from its name, I guess it was initially a regular hospital canteen for housemen.

2. Housemen's Canteen

Migme Singapore

1. migme mascots

While in Singapore on vacation in January, I was invited to visit the head office of migme. I’d be honest and say that I have never heard of migme before, until a friend told me about it two weeks before my trip.

Migme Singapore

2. migme headquarters in Singapore

Migme is a social entertainment platform, sort of like a cross between Instagram and Facebook. At this point in time, it reaches nine million active monthly users in Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Africa and the numbers seem to be growing.

Migme Singapore

3. migme audience team

Migme is available on desktop and as an Android mobile application, although till date, my app isn’t working as it should, and I have been told, the engineers are checking it out and troubleshooting.

Anyway, the migme office at Peninsular Plaza (nearest MRT: City Hall) is the headquarters. I’d have to say, I didn’t expect that many people to be working here.

Migme Singapore

4. the team behind LoveByte mobile app

The migme team shares office with the staff of a sister company called LoveByte. It’s a mobile application available on both iOS and Android, which only allows communication with one partner as it is supposed to be a “couple app”.

Migme Singapore

5. migme engineering team

Imagine, once connected with your partner, the app can track even your battery level and the weather where you are. Now, isn’t that too creepy? It is for me.

Still, I tried it out and it was eye-opening, to say the least. Are you a migme or LoveByte user?

Perak’s Green Tourist Destinations

While clearing my room, I came across this 2012 tourism poster that I had wanted to scan and share for a long time but never found the time to do it. Oh well, so here it is – better late than never!

Gopeng poster

This poster presents popular “green” destinations that best portray Perak’s nature and heritage, with a focus on Gopeng parliamentary constituency.

I admit that even though I am from Ipoh, there are still many of these landmarks that I still have yet to visit. Therefore, this poster is also for my own reference. I hope that one day, I will complete all these spots!
