Pesona Terengganu

1. Pesona Terengganu 2015

There is a saying that goes, “If the mountain won’t come to Muhammad, then Muhammed must go to the mountain.” And this is exactly what the Terengganu state agencies, supported by the state government, are doing.

Over five days, people in Kuala Lumpur, local and foreign, are able to see the best of Terengganu in Dataran Merdeka and Dataran DBKL, where the state’s arts and culture, tourism products, food as well as economic opportunities are showcased and highlighted at three different pavilions.

Pesona Terengganu 2015, as a run up to Visit Terengganu Year 2017, currently held in the heart of Kuala Lumpur’s historical strip, is the first event of a roadshow that will also stop at Johor Bahru in the south and Penang in the north in the near future.

Terengganu cooperatives are also well-looked after in the sense that they are always included in fairs like these as part of the state’s economic contributor. However, the state agency only includes quality cooperatives that have something different to offer.

Besides the trade expo, there is also the consumer fair and Terengganu Kitchen that offers the best traditional cuisine of Terengganu, from nasi dagang to sata, keropok lekor and more. Do take note that Terengganu Kitchen is open until tomorrow (2nd November, 2015) while the trade and consumer fairs will end today (1st November, 2015).

Visiting both the pavilions that house the trade show and consumer fair, I am convinced that a lot of thought was put into them to highlight what Terengganu has to offer, so much so that even baby turtles have been brought in all the way from the East Coast state. This is to impress upon visitors the importance of turtle conservation and how the public can contribute towards the cause.

I have to say that although I have been to Terengganu multiple times, I still find Pesona (Charming) Terengganu a worthy visit because of the precise information that one can get about the state. It answers the question, “What does Terengganu have to offer?”

My room at Quayside Hotel faced the river and I have been on the Melaka River Cruise a couple of times, so I am not unfamiliar with the Casa del Rio name. Anyway, I spent three days / two nights at this hotel and it was one of the rare opportunities that I get to “travel in style”.

I love that this Mediterranean-inspired 5-star luxury boutique hotel is located just mere minutes from Jonker Street and I had the chance to finally check out the weekend night scene of the area.

Casa del Rio, despite its size, has only 66 rooms and suites. All tastefully appointed, they are amazingly spacious and comfortable. I was assigned a Deluxe Room with a view of the Malacca River, as well as a door that faces the fountain when I step out of the room.

By the way, I discovered that coming to Casa del Rio is very convenient, particularly for guests from Singapore. They can just hop on the Luxury Coach Service which shuttles daily between Singapore’s Concorde Hotel and Casa del Rio Melaka.

Alor Limbat Homestay in Marang, Terengganu

The end of October saw me head out to the East Coast state of Terengganu. Yes, again! I have lost count of the number of times that I have visited the state but Terengganu is just too large that it is impossible to visit the entire state in one trip.

Alor Limbat Homestay

1. silat demonstration

Our first stop was Kampung Alor Limbat in Marang. We were there to check out the new homestay establishment managed by Koperasi Desa Alor Limbat Marang Berhad (KODESAL).

Alor means stream while Limbat is the species of a fish. Kampung Alor Limbat is located some 25 km from Kuala Terengganu. The population here is slightly more than a thousand.

Do be aware that this is a rural community and while the people are friendly and courteous, they may not have the same kind of outlook about things that city folk do.

Alor Limbat Homestay

2. set up of the accommodation

Even though the homestay here is already open to guests, there is still plenty of work to be done to start receiving paying guests. The ten cabins are basic – they can accommodate two to four guests, at only RM100 per night.

The kampung (village) view is very peaceful and I think that given some time, when the trees have grown and flowering plants bloom, the village will be like a lovely, welcoming garden. This is the reason why I hope to return one day and see how it has developed.

Guests who come to stay at Kampung Alor Limbat can indulge in a number of old childhood games and get to savour traditional food too.

Alor Limbat Homestay

3. petik mata traditional game

Petik Mata is a traditional game played by children and adults alike. Although I do not know the specifics of the game, the one who can hit the stick the farthest wins.

And then there is another game called Gasing Cacang. Like the name suggests, it is a game of tops. Top spinning is a traditional game of the East Coast. In Kampung Alor Limbat, villagers play it during the dry season, festivals and special occasions.

As a guest of Kampung Alor Limbat, I was able to witness for myself the making of traditional food. They were foreign to me as these are not what we can pick up from the supermarket.

Alor Limbat Homestay

4. grinding noodles for laksa kebok

Laksa is a very common food in Malaysia. Here at Kampung Alor Limbat, it is usually prepared and eaten after harvest season. This is an all-day dish and I would say, an all time favourite. At the same time, it can be found during festivals. The laksa noodles is made using “kebok”, giving it a very smooth texture and delicious taste. In Terengganu, it is eaten either with a red or white sauce.

Alor Limbat Homestay

5. frying emping

Emping, to me, is like cereal (or flakes). It is actually made from rice, whereby the rice, young or old, is soaked in water for several hours. After soaking, dry it by frying it in a pan without adding oil, until they turn white.

Alor Limbat Homestay

6. emping ready to be served

Then, pound these flakes in a wooden mortar. These flakes are served with coconut and a sauce called “serawa”.

Alor Limbat Homestay

7. pounding lok lik

Lok Lik is a speciality prepared for banquets at the mosque. Made of young rice known as “pak ah”, it is pounded in a mortar with palm sugar and coconut until well-blended.

Alor Limbat Homestay

8. lok lik ready to be served

Alor Limbat Homestay

9. pounding gajah mengamuk

Gajah Mengamuk is a traditional food of the community. Usually served for breakfast, it is made from tapioca, boiled and then pounded. It is served with sweets, coconut or sugar.

Alor Limbat Homestay

10. menimba ikan

How do villagers here catch fish? By way of gotong-royong, forming groups of 30 to 40 people when the dry season arrives. Scooping leftover water out of pools and creeks the men, usually, use various tools and even their bare hands, get hold of the fish to be prepared for dinner.

Homestay Teluk Ketapang

1. stingless bees at their nest

Besides the homestay project (previous post), another income generator for KODESAL is the nearby stingless bee farm. There are about 300 man-made nests in the 2-hectare farm in Kampung Alor Limbat, Marang.

Homestay Teluk Ketapang

2. another shot of another nest

I don’t like bees and even though I know that they are stingless (kelulut), their buzzing still gave me the creeps. Nevertheless, I took the opportunity to try sucking the fresh, pure honey directly from the nest.

Homestay Teluk Ketapang

3. one of the many bee nests

The honey here is sweet with a little sourish after taste. Some friends told me that the stingless bee honey that they have tasted elsewhere was totally sweet. As this was my first experience, I don’t know any better.

4. honey ready to be harvested

It is said that stingless bee honey is twice as nutritious as manufactured honey. Its medicinal properties benefit those suffering from gout, sore throat, cough, sinusitis and hemorrhoids. It is also good for the complexion, it seems.

5. drinking natural honey directly from the honeycomb

Although I am sure that there are other producers of stingless bee honey, for convenience, I am just going to include the contact details of KODESAL here. It’s also for my own reference.

2. the 50 m tunnel that allowed wagons carrying iron ore to pass through the hill

I do not know how accurate this information is but it is believed that the mine, the largest then in Southeast Asia, was discovered around 1916 but mining only began in 1927 by the Japanese. The iron ore was exported to Japan to be made into weapons and armaments.

3. storage room for iron ore

The iron ore mine was closed following World War II around 1941. The operations of the mine were then taken over by the British sometime in 1945. Apparently, the mineral was also exported to Japan.

4. storage room for iron ore

This mine was closed for good in 1971 when the mining company (EMMCO) found a better mining concession in Australia. From what I was told, the taxes imposed on them here were just too high.

5. iron ore was transported from this spot to the structure opposite via a pulley system, to be loaded onto trains and shipped to Dungun Port

While at Bukit Besi Iron Ore Mine, what should you look out for?

6. the present office of Central Terengganu Development Authority (KETENGAH)

The first thing that greets you upon entering the mine area would be a tall chimney. That should be your landmark indicating that you have arrived at Bukit Besi Iron Ore Mine. Too bad I do not have a photo of it.

After checking out the History Gallery, you should drop by the ruins of the mine manager’s house. It makes a great backdrop for photographs.

Next up would be the crushing plant. Go in a group as it had been abandoned and therefore, quite scary. Nearby is the tunnel where ore was conveyed by wagons out of the hill.

Within walking distance from this spot is the stockpile area.

Apart from these, there are more structures which were used in the process of mining iron ore. I feel that having a good guide to explain the history of the mine makes a world of difference to your visit.

Tasik Puteri Dungun

1. heading out to Tasik Puteri Bukit Besi, Dungun

Information is scarce about Tasik Puteri in Dungun. It was an iron ore mining pond and so, it is very near the Bukit Besi Iron Ore Mine (previous post). This man-made pond can also be considered as an artefact from the old mining glory.

2.

Spanning 131 hectares, I assume that this mining pond is very deep although in some areas, it looks deceptively shallow.

The pond, or lake as it is referred to, is now part of the recreational ground in this scenic area, just by the border of Tasik Puteri Golf Club.

Apart from its breathtaking view, I am not aware of any other activities that one could indulge in here. For further information, check this official link.

“Winds of Melaka” Live Stage Show at Melaka Alive!

I was looking forward to watching “Winds of Melaka” at the Melaka Alive! stage. The live stage show received a lot of hype when it was newly launched and it would be my first show there.

Melaka Alive

1. Melaka Alive

I don’t believe that I have watched a show like this before, although someone subsequently said that there is something similar in Bangkok, just a few notches better.

Melaka Alive

2. show in progress

Oh well, I have nothing to compare it with, so I quite enjoyed the performance, except that the story line was a little bias and the historical aspect of Melaka was not explored as in-depth as I had hoped.

Melaka Alive

3. group photo of the cast

Perhaps they were limited by time, I don’t know. I, however, would like to give credit to the protagonists for their perfectly timed lip-synching.

Melaka Alive

4. after the show

Would I go and watch again? Probably. Live shows like these have to be watched more than once to really enjoy the essence of the story. Besides, I understand that Melaka Alive also stages another show called “The Pirate Adventure”. Is it similar? I do not know. I only know that ticket prices are cheaper.

Total wait time was “only” about 30 minutes. It was good that they gave us some satay to start our meal first and then topped up the balance of our order when the satays were available.

It has certainly been a long while since I had pork satay. Since I don’t take beef, I would only take chicken satay. I am unsure if pork satay is still available in Ipoh….I need to go and check the stall in Ipoh Old Town.

But then again, Ipoh’s pork satay would be Cantonese-style while this one at Sun May Hiong is said to be Hainanese-style.

The sauce here is a little sourish compared to the other famous pork satay shop in Malacca. Could it be because of the pineapple?
