Two years after my last trip to Malacca where I stayed at Quayside Hotel, I am back, this time putting up at the 5-star luxury boutique hotel across the Malacca River.
My room at Quayside Hotel faced the river and I have been on the Melaka River Cruise a couple of times, so I am not unfamiliar with the Casa del Rio name. Anyway, I spent three days / two nights at this hotel and it was one of the rare opportunities that I get to “travel in style”.
I love that this Mediterranean-inspired 5-star luxury boutique hotel is located just mere minutes from Jonker Street and I had the chance to finally check out the weekend night scene of the area.

Previously, I was always in Melaka either during the weekend or day time. It was bustling with people but not many things caught my eye, strangely.
Casa del Rio, despite its size, has only 66 rooms and suites. All tastefully appointed, they are amazingly spacious and comfortable. I was assigned a Deluxe Room with a view of the Malacca River, as well as a door that faces the fountain when I step out of the room.
I have to note, though, that my workstation lacked a power point and since I brought along my laptop to work, it was a hassle to have to charge it somewhere else.

13. Chinese course meal – clockwise from top left: Honey Peanut Prawns, Char Siew Chicken, Steamed Red Snapper (fish) with Chili XO Sauce & Wok-fried Kailan Lettuce, Shrimp, Dried Lili Bud & Mushroom
That aside, the hotel being 5-star, service provided matched that rating, from the turning-down service to porter service although I didn’t use the porter service as I could easily handle my own luggage.

15. Portuguese-themed dinner - clockwise from top left: Black-eyed Peas Salad, Legumes Grelhados and Chickpea & Codfish Salad
One thing I appreciated is that guests are able to place an order from the breakfast à la carte menu PLUS enjoy the buffet spread. Talk about starting the day with a huge breakfast.

16. Portuguese-themed dinner - clockwise from top left: Jenahak Asam Pedas, Portuguese Octopus Salad & Butter Chicken

17. Portuguese-themed dinner - clockwise from top left: Cured Horse Mackerel with Olive Oil, Roasted Pumpkin with Rosemary and Honey, Sautéed Green Bean with Onion and Garlic & Dried Salted Cod with Roasted Potato
This menu is updated regularly depending on feedback provided by guests. Of the two mornings there, I selected different items to try out the varieties offered.

18. Portuguese-themed dinner - clockwise from top left: Roasted Red Snapper with Prawn Sauce, Poach Green Peas with Quail Eggs, Roasted Duck & Broccoli Mushroom with Oyster
During the weekend I was there, the hotel launched an authentic Portuguese menu introduced by visiting chef, Chef Micael Valentim, the Executive Chef at Martinhal Beach Resort & Hotel Sagres, Portugal. The dishes have been incorporated into the hotel’s Saturday barbecue dinner.
By the way, I discovered that coming to Casa del Rio is very convenient, particularly for guests from Singapore. They can just hop on the Luxury Coach Service which shuttles daily between Singapore’s Concorde Hotel and Casa del Rio Melaka.
The coach leaves Singapore at 8am and leaves Melaka at 4.15pm. Fare is SGD33 per trip. Peak and super peak season charges may apply.
