1. Kampung Alai, Melaka

Kampung Alai is a traditional Malay village located about 8 kilometres south of Melaka town centre. ‘Alai’ is the name of a tree, which was how the village got its name. This village of modest size boasts a population of approximately two thousand, in 500 houses. Some of these houses are enrolled in the Kampung Alai Homestay Programme.

Although Kampung Alai is well known for its ‘kompang’ group, a traditional Malay music troupe, the village’s Seri Warisan Baru Alai Dondang Sayang group led by Tuan Hj. Mohd. Isa, which was established in 2011, is slowly gaining popularity.

Besides the opportunity to get to know the Malay culture and daily routine of the community while being hosted by these families, guests can get to tour some of the local industries, such as the production of traditional Malay snacks of “kuih onde-onde” and “inang-inang sagu”, as well as involve themselves in fishing at the freshwater pond.

By the way, “kuih onde-onde” is also known as Buah Melaka. Where I come from, I know it as “bomb”, with melted palm sugar in the middle that would squeeze out if bitten too hard.

Obviously, what I have mentioned are merely a few things of interest to see and do at a homestay. Like I always say, I am a city girl, therefore not ready to willingly forgo modern amenities that may not be available in a village. However, one must go and experience staying in a village, if only for once.
